I thought you meant Western Force had signed Henson when I saw the post 1st of all - but this is an even bigger gamble and worse signing for them!
God help them!!!

I very much doubt that Western Force are daft enough to expect an ok full back to perform at OH.

Looks like the entire squad will be going to SA for pre-season training and the game against the Cheetahs. Although the Welsh players are unlikely to feature, it seems Warburton may be the new captain to replace Tito.

Captain for the tour or season? He won't play much for the Blues next year so they should probably pick someone else.

Paterson may be a shout, he plays most games and tends to front up quite well. Other then him only Xav really stands out as a leader.

Yeah, I would give it to Paterson or Pretorious. Rush probably won't be first choice and Warburton (and potentially Pretorious) will be away with Wales for most of the season.

All right boys, just wondering is there any news on developments with CAP? I havent seen any work being done there, but that could be due to the impending olympic events?

ooh..I haven't seen much when I'm passing, but they could well be working inside the grounds first - getting the loos and that sorted.

Don't think there are plans to do much outside the stadium, the toilets, boxes and the pitch are the main concerns atm.

That's fair enough Wales. If it aint broke...they managed all right before and there was no ambulance chasing afterwards.

Never, ever forget.......
"Thomas firmly rejected any suggestion the cuts were a consequence of costs incurred through moving to the Cardiff City Stadium from the Arms Park.
“That is a lot of nonsense,” he said.
“If we hadn’t gone to the new stadium we would be in a far worse financial situation.
“The Arms Park is dying. It’s in decay. It’s falling apart.
“There’s no way we could compete in the modern era with the facilities available to us there.
“Our move to the new stadium was our saving grace.
“Our crowd numbers are up 30 per cent since we left the Arms Park, our turnover is up. Everything is going in the right direction.”

Re: Cardiff Blues squad and off-field updates.
Was in a few meetings in the CAP recently...
Not a lot going on, a few builders roaming around looking a little confused, the pitch is being worked on pretty hard!
It looks like it's had a lick of paint, but I really wouldn't be able to give anyone specifics.

Tonight at CAP.Some points;
PT not present due to illness.
RH found a lack of focus on commercial and marketing side of the business when he arrived and he therefore put new people into key positions. Aimimg for a sustainable model.
CAP - river end boxes refurbished financed by sale of boxes, both stans refurbished. Fan zone will be under south stand. Current capacity c12k could be raised to 14k with temp stands. WRU/CAC lease discussions ongoing- RH not involved.
Has increased sponsorship, new stand sponsors, branding will be up shortly. helped by move to CAP. Believes they will be in profit in the year ahead currently projecting £76k but that £400k is acheivable.
Season ticket sales 2,183 up to last week, expecting a spike as season approaches = £420k to date compared with £350k last season. 66% of ST sales are renewals, 34% new customers, of these 54% were previously ST holders. 46% of new ST first time ST holders.
852 of last years ST holders live in RCT.
Phil Davies has overhauled the structure around the players, now 6 physical strenght and conditioning coaches 3 of whom paid by Blues others interns, WRU.
No games will be played at Sardis Rd next season but there will be a 'hearts and minds' strategy to increase support across the region. Not much detail on this but seems linked to work of development staff with youngsters etc rather than supporters of Ponty.
Have approached Pro 12 asking for Friday and Saturday fixturesWRU and other regions involved but not all want same thing, scheduling meeting this Friday.
WRU have no intention of closing Glanmore's Gap. Ground surveyed regularly and some signs of decay which will need to be addresed. Nothing will be put to CAC in terms of ground development until money in place. (This did not imply anything was imminent).
There is a clause in the deal with CCFC preventing disclosure of terms of the deal.
2012 draft accounts have been presented to the board and will be approved by end of Sept. AGM will be held before Xmas. Believed to be saving £2m next season compared to last due to return to CAP and reduction in wages.
RH came over very well and answered all the rambling questions put to him quite frankly. Broadly saying he came in and found an amateurish operation which he has spent the last 6 months turning around. Needless to say general mood was positive to him in view of the return to CAP.

I think all that is fair enough. The mistakes they made before were spending money that they did not have. The first priority has to be success on the pitch, not a 'build it and they will come' attitude.
success on the pitch will naturally lead to bigger crowds and hence money which can then be used to finance any improvements, not before.
I am glad to see the regions being more sensible as no business can continue to bleed money like they have been doing.
Not surprised about his comments about an amateurish set up, I think we have all thought that for years and that is down to Peter Thomas. he has no idea about running a business. He just inherited a successful one that his dad built, was improved by his siblings and then sold off. No real business sense from him at all but he just surrounds himself with Yes men.
Season ticket sales only 2k though??? I thought the talk on here had been about 5k sold. If its true then that is very poor for a side like the bLues.

Season tickets sales are definitely up on last year, i'm not sure if the 2k figure is right as I have heard 4-5k from several other sources. We will have to wait and see what the figure is when the new season starts.
Sounds like Holland is making a huge difference to the club, we finally have someone who can run a business.

Re: Cardiff Blues squad and off-field updates.
With Cardiff Blues receiving confirmation of their friendly fixtures in August, Phil Davies is pleased with the progress made so far in the summer.
Speaking at the Vale of Glamorgan Training Centre, Davies, said,
"We've restructured the rugby programme and have six conditioners working with the players, whereas previously there was only two."
"To have that manpower supporting the players is great."
"We've seen some big increases in their physical size and decreases in their body fat, so it's been working really well so far."
"I'm really pleased with everyone's efforts and I've been very encouraged."
"The staff are very hard working and motivated and the players are the same."
'We have some exciting pre season fixtures coming up and everyone's looking forward to them."
Cardiff Blues play the following fixtures in August:
Toyota Free State Cheetahs
Toyota Free State Cheetahs v Cardiff Blues
Saturday 4 August, Grey's College, kick off TBC
Worcester Warriors
Cardiff Blues v Worcester Warriors**
Saturday 11 August; 2.30pm kick off, Cardiff Arms Park
**Admission to the match is included in the season ticket package
Gloucester Rugby
Gloucester Rugby v Cardiff Blues
Saturday 18 August, 3.00pm kick off, Kingsholm
Bath Rugby
Bath Rugby v Cardiff Blues
Friday 24 August, 7.30pm kick off, The Recreation Ground

Hate to say it but the above is total tripe! From what Ive heard 1 extra conditioner has been employed, 3 being interns, probably UWIC students learning the ropes while they train. And of those 3 interns one may be veiwing the first team, and all 3 will be working within the academy.
3 conditioners will do very little more than 2, all this talk of gains and losses wreaks of polish chriochamber speak! It's all smoke and mirrors IMO

That's a blow for the Blues, as he was an experienced player who could still offer a bit even though he was winding down.
I suppose on the plus side it'll free up a fair bit of funds/wages for them.

Disappointed Rush has retired, he would be useful cover at the least. Luke Hamilton will get a lot more gametime, with Pretorious now first choice 8.
Justin Burnell has left his post with immediate effect now confirmed (pity they couldn't afford to pay off the incompetent Baber too)

Might even see Warburton given a run there now and again with Navidi at 7.
Seems strange to get rid of only one of them, maybe because there isn't a backs coach to take over. Baber in particular seemed like the bigger problem to me, especially his ego.

I doubt Warburton will move to 8 (maybe if Martyn was still playing), Hamilton has looked very good and hopefully Pretorious won't get injured again.
6. Paterson
7. Warburton
8. Pretorious
Is a fantastic backrow, probably the best the Blues have had for 5years (since Molitika, Martyn and Rush were in their hay day)

Typed in Robin Copeland number 8 and it says in a match report that he played there.
He could be an interesting option for you guys. Nothing wrong with a fast try scoring 8.

Thanks for keeping this thread going guys, Im pretty rubbish at keeping up with everything that goes on in the off-season so this has been a major help!
the pack is going to be interesting for this coming season, anyone wanna attempt to throw out who they think could be in the forward 8?

Re: Cardiff Blues squad and off-field updates.
Fancy being a professional rugby player? It’s not quite as easy as it seems, as Andy Howell discovered when he spent a day with Phil Davies and his Blues team watching the squad being subjected to a punishing training regime. Here he reports on what goes on behind the scenes...
There is an age-old saying about football stars hating the rigours of pre-season training. Running, running and yet more running to get them ship-shape for the gruelling campaign ahead.
Green Flag Breakdown Cover from £20
Malky Mackay’s Cardiff City stars might have a slightly different perception judging by the look of horror I saw on the faces of some of them as they gazed at the gruelling work-out being undertaken by Phil Davies’ Blues forwards.
Mackay’s Bluebirds and Davies’ Blues share a plush training centre nestled in the Vale of Glamorgan, but the type of training they do is chalk and cheese.
The football players work on passing, skill and speed, and there’s hardly any fat on them.
In rugby, there is an emphasis on power with big muscles, bulk and upper-body strength being important for any member of the pack.
Members of the City squad were heading for a kick-about on their training pitch and had to walk past a Blues forward contingent.
Head fitness coach Trystan Bevan had warned me the six conditioners working at the Blues would be “beasting” the squad. Judging by what I saw, he was spot on.
Backs and forwards were ‘treated’ to a seven-hour day. Each group was ‘subjected’ to two punishing training sessions.
It was compelling viewing, with excruciating pain for many as they pushed sleds laden with weights and threw medicine balls high into the air during some 45 minutes of high-intensity exercise.
And the team spirit which new director of rugby Davies puts so much store on came shining through as players coaxed and cajoled team-mates not to give in.
Popular hooker Marc Breeze seemed to be at the end of his tether as he attempted to shove the sled some 25ft for the umpteenth time.
There was hardly any rest with players having to keep moving for almost the complete duration.
Legs got heavier and heavier and bodies slumped forward, but each managed to keep going.
Breeze appeared to be on the point of throwing up, but courageously continued.
“That was hard,” said the 25-year-old afterwards.
Well, something along those lines, but with a more colourful choice of words.
Prop Nathan Trevett, a regular with Cardiff RFC’s club team, mirrored his view.
“I’ve never done anything like this before, not that tough,” he said, managing to crack a slight smile.
Evidence was provided with the progress being made on the fitness front since the Blues squad – their current Wales internationals don’t return to work until August 6 – gathered on June 11.
Photographs showed the body shapes of a number of players have already markedly changed with fat disappearing and being replaced by a lean look.
“They have been doing real high-intensity work,” explained former Leeds, Scarlets, Cardiff RFC and Wales Under-20 coach Davies, who left a job as assistant at Aviva Premiership side Worcester at the end of last season for the Blues.
He has brought organisation and meticulous planning to pre-season, and the feedback from staff and players was positive.
“There are two fundamentals and they are non-negotiable,” explained Davies. “You have to have a high work ethic and team spirit.
“To be fair, the players and the staff have been fantastic.”
Davies is uncompromising and leaves no stone unturned when it comes to players being fit, having brought in more conditioning experts to raise the number to six.
“I’ve been able to do that thanks to the support of the WRU and the universities,” Davies went on.
While the forwards were being ‘encouraged’ by the trainers and their playing mates, those on rehabilitation programmes following injury, were working out in the gym.
Wales prop cap Scott Andrews and up-and-coming flanker Josh Navidi were among those being put through the mill indoors.
Opening session of the day over, players keeled over and began their recovery.
They had to jump in ice baths, drink supplements, have physio or a massage before being permitted to relax in the team room.
Some shut their eyes and had a nap while others chilled out despite the presence of a table-tennis table.
You’d suspect that some might have been having nightmares with a second session lined up barely an hour later.
The ‘pretty ones’ – the phrase given to the backs by the forwards – had done their sled and medicine ball session earlier and were first to return to the fray.
The second session was anaerobic games and rugby skills.
A brisk 10-minute warm-up, in which they concentrated on handling skills, was followed by more skill work, running patterns and phase-play.
There was wrestling, work with tackle shields, footwork and evasion, with players slaloming between poles before off-loading to a supporting team-mate.
Rest was at a premium and, as players tired, you could see how their minds reacted slower to orders and mistakes crept in.
When they trudged off at the end with stiff legs, pounding lungs, even veteran fly-half Ceri Sweeney was noticeably less chirpy than he had been beforehand.
As they disappeared for more massages, ice baths, protein supplements, lunch and a meeting, the forwards reappeared.
Their session mirrored that of the backs.
It was more Breeze’s forte and he showed up well.
So did South African born back-row forward Andries Pretorius, whose athleticism and high fitness levels were again clear to see.
If you think two sessions a day is bad enough, then spare a thought for the two days a week when they do three!
Commitment, team spirit and fitness levels can’t be questioned.
“We have put some new systems in place and everybody has reacted to it positively and we have already seen rewards,” said Davies.
“The target is to say we have got the very last drop of potential out of each player.”
Blues supporters can be assured that if the side doesn’t succeed under Davies this season, it certainly won’t be for a lack of effort!

Re: Cardiff Blues squad and off-field updates.
Im pretty encouraged by the noises coming out of the Blues at the moment.
Last season there was a distinct lack of effort in some games, and complaints about fitness by Gatland. I don't think we will see the same under Phil Davies. Im hopeful we will actually do better next season even without Gethin and Laulaula.

The loss of Gethin is massive but I'm not so sure Lua Lua is too. He was often the bloke who inspired a bit of magic, but when heads were a bit down he was not the man to turn to.
Cory Allen, Jamie Roberts, Gavin Evans and Daf Hewitt are all good lads plenty of strength.

I would rather Laulaula had stayed than Gethin.

Evans and Hewitt are not HC or Amlin quality though

Hewitt is ok, Allen is unproven, Roberts is often worse than Hewitt when he actually bothers to play for us (about 60minutes last season), Evans is just awful.

Evans and Hewitt are decent Rabo players, and plug gaps in all fairness. Thats what theyre there for, they cost little and play week in week out.
All this blustering about the training regime is pathetic. I think Davies is being smart, turning the poor signings into potential superstars is just not working IMO, and the hot air coming out of the Blues camp wreaks of desperation. Name me one euro team who are not being beasted currently?!

Looks like Paterson will miss the first few weeks of the new season after having an operation on both his shoulders (he played much of last season with a partially dislocated right shoulder and was still our best player!)

Re: Cardiff Blues squad and off-field updates.
I hope to see a fully fit Roberts run out for the Blues, going on his barn-storming runs. We ain't seen them since the world cup because he's been carrying injuries since then (hence being the dummy runner on most backline moves during 6 NAtions). I also hope it is Allen on his shoulder wearing the 13 jersey. Phil Davies will likely give him the chance, knowing Phil.
L. Williams, J. Tovey, H. Robinson, J. Roberts, C. Allen, T. James, L. Halfpenny; that would be my pick! The forwards really need to give these backs a good platform to do their thing. Good luck.

He hardly plays for the Blues even if he's fit Morg. We'll be seeing a lot more of Gavin Evans and Dafydd Hewitt

Would like to see those backs in the Heineken Cup though. Roberts should be getting a few games at the start of the season after this lay-off he has had, that's what I'm assuming anyway. (don't assume, because it makes an ass out of u and me).

Just looking at his record with the Blues, the only games we will see him play are in the HC and derbies

I think I did too, I knew someone was missing out. Big blunder on my part.

Apparently, Richard Mustoe has had to retire through injury.
Sad to see him go, always gave 100% no matter the game, played with his heart on his sleeve.

Sad news about Richard Mustoe. Good lad, been a dependable player at Blues and the Ospreys.
Good news about that handsome looking backline. Lloyd Williams and Tovey is the most exciting Halfback combo at the blues in years.

Come-off it, Williams had enough chances last season, and shown he was not even ready yet for regional rugby yet.
The halfbacks wont get any decent ball next season, behind those forwards.

Re: Cardiff Blues squad and off-field updates.
Deniol Jones has been appointed team manager (a job I thought was going to Martyn)
But more importantly, Lee Jarvis has been appointed as a skills coach - so Baber won't be doing as much!
