Jiffy - good, bad or indifferent?
Jiffy poll
Seems to be a difference of opinion. Would be interesting to know if it is a general split or a Wales/everyone else split - although to be fair a number of posters have expressed opinions contrary to this assumption.

Great player knows the game inside out and tells it like it is.
Regards the comments about him being biased to Wales, he is no where near as one eyed as dalaglio or inverdale...!

He should stick to scrum V where he has time to consider his comments.
Live commentating he gets carried away, his voice & bias go up several octaves.

Jesus, watch a game of rugby with Dalaglio as a pundit with a couple of non englishmen you'll get the picture.BigTrevsbigmac wrote:He should stick to scrum V where he has time to consider his comments.

Re: Jiffy poll
Dayglo being bad or not doesn't make Jiffy any less irritating. Cackling like a 12 year old girl only with a higher pitched voice when Wales are winning or constantly whinging when they aren't. "numbers!" and "he's in" although he never actually gets the latter right. It's usually the kiss of death to a play...

He does know his rugby, but he is quite biased in his commentary at times, and his voice can grate the cavities of your ears after a while.

Re: Jiffy poll
In game he offers no analysis and has a bad habit of claiming referees made mistakes when then didnt ( "that was never a yellow ....")
The voice and the poorly concealed bias is another issue. Moore is equally as passionate, but at least offers some real technical insight into whats going on in the game even if he gets fixated on certain bugbears. I used to hate Nero for his bombastic pride and the chip on his shoulder he had about Johnson but hes gotten a lot better.
Jiffy is always just a cliche spouter. Hes supposed to be the technical voice

Re: Jiffy poll
Watched the game last night and jiffy no no more excited than Brian moore.
Let's face it, and some people have, you just don't like the sound of his voice. I can't stand listening to andy nicol but I don't claim he s a bad commentator
I watches the game last night and listened out for these biased comments and found as many "brilliants" and "greats" for French play. He was slating France because the French kept kicking, if he was that biased he would be laughing.
Funny how he's been doing this for years but now wales win the championship all eyes are on Jiffy and we get multiple threads about it.
Don't forget he's also directing the director when he doesn't have his mike on, he's not just sitting there watching the game.

Sorry, Moore and jiffy are the same other than voice.
What everyone wants is either mclaren back or some 50s style cold pathe news presenter.

Re: Jiffy poll
Moore is total pap and as bias as they come, love it when the rattle gets thrown and he whinges like a kid.
Inverdale, he can hardly get through a 7's half talking about Johnny never mind a full game of XV's hahaha
Anyway you are big boys and claim to know everything about rugby so why not just put MUTE into action, I believe in the UK by pushing the red button you can just have the crowd. How I wish I could have that in NZ.

Re: Jiffy poll
iffy has his moments, pretty much like they all do. I was laughing so hard at him during 1/2 time of the France England match. He seemed so desperate for England to lose that even Tommy C made a joke about it. It was a comical moment

He did laugh every time Beauxis kicked the ball after a certain point. The bias isnt about not praising opposition play, its about making it overly obvious which side you support and letting emotion take over.
People have been complaining about him for years
But again for me the complaints arent about his passion, its about his one eyed view of controversial incidents, his inability to get teh laws of the game correct when commenting on them, and his lack of technical insight offered. This isnt an antio Welsh thing, its a dumbing down issue. The BBC is following other broadcasters in encouraging its presenters and experts to avoid discussing anything complicated and instead act as cheerleaders and an emotional soundtrack.
Andy Nicol is just incomprehensable, he could be talking about the soccer for all the difference it would make. I can make more words of sense out from a Serge Betsen comment. I dont think its just his accent, he sounds drunk half the time. Can the Scottsfolk understand him?

Re: Jiffy poll
Well, I'm only judging from the numbers, it would appear Jiffy is fine providing you're Welsh. Probably much the same as Moore for thev Welsh, although the other nations don't seem to mind him so much.
Fair enough!

Re: Jiffy poll
I sit down to watch a good game of rugby then my joy turns to despair as I see Davies is commentating.
Passion? Yes But only for anything Welsh.
Knowledge? Of back play, certainly.
Irritations? Absolutely everything else. Tone of voice, bias, excitability, octave adjustments (going up), often getting it wrong, complaining when things don't go Wales' way.
I am English & I love the way Wales play and they do deserve their Slam. However I cannot stand Jiffy. So I guess I am a bit biased...

Re: Jiffy poll
Jiffy is terrible
Inverdale is worse
Guscott is just as bad
Dayglo is even par with Jiffy
Brian Moore is not only one eyed, but incompetant (although funny when he gets angry during the match if england are playing badly)
Andy Nicol is as bad as Jiffy
Andrew Cotter is the only one whom I would refer to as "professional". He does not go one sided, he is understandable
No one will ever match MaClaren but at least Cotter is going in the right direction

Jiffy is a terrible one eyed whiney commentator in the live coverage.
However, I think he does do a good post-event analysis.

I find him hilarious, but then I'm welsh, and he's my mate's dad.
Play nice, he can get a bit excited but at least he's calmed down his use of "NUUUUUUUUUUUMBAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHSSSSS" anytime there was a 1 man overlap from a sides own 22.

Terribly biased and can't stand his fidgety short fused nature. Don't mind him before a game, obviously knows his stuff, but gets too worked up during and post game and just gets on my t its. As does Moore and Barnes, for the record and the sake of equality!

Re: Jiffy poll
Within the space of 3 minutes in the 2nd half he said, "Wales could run away with this if......" then Eddie butted in with some commentary and moments later Jiffy comes out with, "I can see this one going right to the wire" - I find it hilarious - People on here hate the accent more than anything and that's dangerous territory.

Re: Jiffy poll
Jiffy's alright, who cares if he's biased. I'd be biased towards England if i was commentating. Moore is good, i don't think he's biased but i suppose i'm not watching from a neutral's perspective. I really like these two cos they actually seem to 'enjoy' watching the match. It's a bit like watching with a noisy mate. I do think, however, that Inverdale should be fired into the heart of the sun and Guscott gagged with one of his many scarves!

Re: Jiffy poll
Eddie Butler seems to think he's auditioning for RADA and Cotter sounds like he's holding his nose and speaking through a toilet roll.
Moore is actually very knowledgable, which as a qualified referee, he ought to be. I'm happy with him as co-commentator.
Whatever happened to Nigel Starmer-Smith? He was actually excellent.
