Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
It seems Heyneke Meyer not only has Victor Matfield in his sights but also a few other overseas players. It seems the names Fourie du Preez (Japan), locks Bakkies Botha (France) and Danie Rossouw (Japan), prop Gurthrö Steenkamp (France), centre Jaque Fourie (Japan) and utility back Francois Steyn (France) are also being bandied about.
Apparently Matfield has not ruled out a comeback, although he repeatedly said that he won't be able to take six months off and then start playing again. Now if he was to come back for the England tour, surely he would need to get in some match time and gain match fitness.
OK, I am all for saying the win is important and after having four years under PDV where half a dozen test matches were sacrificed for “the greater good”, I think Heyneke Meyer must be very careful how he approaches this.
If he is to be believed then this will only be for the England tour, but then where does he stop? After The Rugby Championship?
If he wants to use an experienced team to ease the transition of new blood it makes sense, I sure as hell hope he isn’t going to continue with this trend.

It would mean he would need to play some Super Rugby in the next month. Also, whether the Bulls will be prepared to axe one of their regular locks - Juandré Kruger, Flip van der Merwe and Wilhelm Steenkamp have all been in fine form - remains to be seen.
However, there could be playing opportunities at the Sharks, who have a number of second row injuries, the Cheetahs, who are also thin at lock, or even the Stormers, who suffered two injury setbacks in the second row at the weekend.
Meyer confirmed at the media scrum in Pretoria that Matfield was a certainty to join the Springbok team as a line-out consultant, and also revealed that with many SA locks injured, there was serious consideration for him to make a handful of appearances.
"Victor is certainly going to play a big part in helping with structures and line-out jumpers throughout South Africa," the Bok coach said.
"I'm also going to make use of other consultants. As I've said before, you can't coach in the week or two before the England series or the Rugby Championship," Meyer said - indicating that he will bank on "experience" in the opening matches of his tenure.
Meyer made it clear that Matfield is not the only player he could be targeting for his first outing as Bok coach.
"At this stage, I'm speaking to every single player out there and at the moment I am worried about the crisis at lock," he said of injuries that could rule out frontline choices like Andries Bekker, Eben Etzebeth and Alistair Hargreaves.
"[But] I am talking to every ex-player out there and I will make a decision when the time is right," Meyer added.
Steyn has already indicated that he will return from Racing Metro at the end of the European season to rejoin the Sharks in Durban.
"Most players still want to play for their country, but there are just some administrative challenges that we are facing," Meyer told the media.
"SARU has a list of the names of players I want, but that will depend on how the negotiations go.
"I am looking at overseas-based players especially for the first Test against England. I want to have an experienced team.
"We are in talks with a few guys. Everyone is positive," Meyer added.
While he will start with an experienced group, the Bok mentor is not dismissing the claims of the many talented youngsters that have come through the ranks this year.
Players like Etzebeth, Siya Kolisi and Steven Kitshoff (all Stormers), Johan Goosen (Cheetahs), Juandré Kruger and CJ Stander (Bulls) are among those who have impressed the Bok coach.
"I think there are a lot of great youngsters coming through," he said.
"But my policy, especially for England, will probably be to go with a more experienced side," he said, adding: "The focus will be to beat England and get the youngsters to learn."

I can't see how usefull some of those players would actually be. You have such strong strength in depth that you should be able to move on from the likes of Botha and Matfield and bring on the youngsters.

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
I understand that he says there will be no time for any training inbetween this ridiculous super XV and the England tests, and I also understand the win is important, and I understand he feels experience is important due to the lack of preperation time, what worries me is how long will he use that as an excuse.
The other concern is the fact that he is surrounding hmself with Bulls coaches, players etc.
Is he planning to be as conservative as previous coaches just so he feels safe?

It's a problem in many rugby nations Biltong. Look at how pathetically conservative France were at the latter end of the 6N. French flair has been replaced well and truly with French tackling and not much else.
AR for Scotland is trying to be more adventurous but still not enough and his selections still favour the conservative side. Kidney thinks his forwards will turn up in every game and doesn't have a more adventurous plan B it seems.
Lancaster for England probably took the most gambles. But the English play was built on rock solid defence and not mucg creativity in the backs. Now teams will know more about the new players and come up with counter plans to nullify their strengths.
SA has so much talent and it's been criminally under utilised. SA can be far more threatening with the ball in hand running at the line instead of kicking. The Stormers and Blues look to have rock solid defences this year but hopefully we can see a little more creativity in the backs. With that I don't mean willy-nilly running and spreading the ball wide with wild abandon. But rather kicking less and keeping the ball more and testing the line in different areas. Matfield was a lineout threat but SA can add so much more to their game than the set piece and kicking the percentages.

Biltong,
I've read a lot of your posts regarding Meyer and the future for the Boks recently, and I have to admit, the more I read and watch the Super XV (currently living in Sydney, coaching a Kentwell Cup team) I am genuinely excited for your future.
I do think that Meyer will be conservative to begin with (much like Venter at Sarries) and will go with the likes of Morne Steyn at 10 to ensure a series win, and just to make sure that you are once again a ridiculously tough team to beat and outmuscle.
I think we'll then see some of your outstanding youngsters come through and your patterns and flair will develop through those guys, whilst still having a basic 'earn the right' gameplan.
There's nothing wrong with playing in the right areas either!!
But, I do think, that with the younger guys you've got coming through, you're goig to be one hell of a team very very soon...

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
hi monkey, thanks mate, I hope that is his intentions, and yes I agree we will always play with the concept of territory, control and then go wide.
I don't really want us to change that approach, it has worked for us for 100 years, the only thing I want changed in our make up is the predictability with which we attack. We need to get away from the idea that we will score tries by running through defensive lines or the odd overlap.
We need a few of those exciting youngsters who will bring those variations in of running off the shoulder of the ball carrier, offloading into space, running against the grain of the drift defence, kicking those little chips behind the rush defence.
Just a little variation, that is all I want and ask.

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
Well, I think that he'll realise after several close wins with Steyn at 10, that you'll need more, the ability of a plan B.
Coupled with Lambie hammering down his door with more and more awesome performances, he'll be selected and you'll go from strength to strength. Plus and honourable mention to Grant who's been exceptional.
If I'm honest, I've never been a massive fan of watching the SA teams in Super Rugby, but this year, I think that they've been my favoured viewing (apart from the Chiefs possibly).
Greyling's try last weekend was immense, I like him a lot, he's going to be great. It was great to see Deysel back this weekend along with some other great performces. I like Taute at 15 a lot, but he's got some competition from Viljoen and Kirchner. Daniller was there, but after fannying out of tackling SBW, I wouldn't want him anywhere near the Boks.
I'd also love to see Plumtree back in Swansea too, I'd have him in heartbeat.
Who do you think are the ones to watch? Interesting news on Rassie today too...

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
I think Taute is a big talent, he will have to play for another frnachise though, I don't know if Meyer will use him though. Dean Greyling was a bit dissappointing last year during the Tri Nations when he and Werner Kruger were selected for the away trip to Oz and NZ, but yes that was a beautiful dummy and he showed some decent pace.
My favourites of the new guard will be.
Coenie Oosthuizen, he is a great all round player and huge pileferer of the ruck ball, got a bit of a sidestep on him as well, if you watched their game against the Hurricanes.
The loose head from the Stormers, Steven Kitshoff looks great and a very strong scrummager,(these two are both under 21 years of age.
I like the Stormers Locks and also Juandre Kruger from the Bulls
Hougaard, Lambie/Goosen can be our combo at halfback for the next 8 years.
So yes, there are quite a number of others as well.
I think Rassie's appointment was a master stroke, hopefully he will be utilised well.

Still think this is the very problem. If Morne Steyn plays the England series as the primary 10 tjen they will have lost the chamce to develop a more widely skilled 10 and a backline.
And come 4N theyll say they have to play Steyn as he went so well and the same tired wheels will go round and round. Steyn is always picked 'just to win this next test'.
If SA dont use the England home series as an opportunity to at least add some width and genuine rather than opportunistic backplay then theyll only have themselves to blame.
If Steyns 10 through the main part of the 4N they simply wont win it. Steyn to the ABs is in the same class as ogara, stephen jones, a later Wilko. All very predictable and usually dont front. To beat the ABs you have to score tries and at that level hes not effective as a player against us and that will spread through the backline. You need a confident running 10.
I know i keep repeating it but the last four years have overall been poor. Yet in that same period theyve hardly developed a single world class player. Bits and pieces at best.

That is my biggest concern, as you say, how long does he keep Steyn in there, when does he give Lambie or Goosen a go, when we play Romania?

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
Play them off first up against england with steyn on the bench. Theyre at home and have played more than enough top rugby.
The security blanket has got to be picked up and thrown out. Ba!?@lls are needed. Put Steyn on warning and announce as early as possible thay the winds of change are coming.
Back the players to perform and stop mucking them around. Then leave it to the players.
Far too many controlling interests exist on the sidelines when it is the players- and no one else- that win matches.
Have a matfield or two purely for transition but only for that. Dont fall back to 'if its winning...'
Change requires risks but I cant see anything better than a home series of 3 against a strong NH side to introduce the new side to fans players and the rest of the world.

Gowales youll find deans and hansen will be in the same boat such is the window but Meyer has already shown hes adaptable with his upcoming squad camps during the byes.
Fact is nothing other than cold hard tests will sort this side out and if they play it safe then theyll lose the opportunity.
My guess is if safe is the thinking meyer will wait for the home argie match to experiment. And that would be gutless...and a shame.

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
The New Bok Coach is surrounding himself with the people he knows ex-Bulls support staff etc.Matfield/Smit some where in the Coaching mix makes sense too, stupid to waste that experience.I expect classic Bok game to continue, strong up front, solid defence, risk little and kick your goals.I don`t expect all the old guard to go over night BUT the young guys will be fed in.
Meyer probably has a Honeymoon period of a couple of matches, lose them and the Media will be after his blood just like PDV.At Super level SA have dominated most of the recent years. This year too I will be surprised if they don`t even make the finals.Would`nt bet against the Stormers winning it too, won`be pretty but very effective.Currently games are won or lost by in discipline and Goal kickers.THE BOKS currentl y have THE BEST selection of those in the game.

Biltong,
For all they were great players (the ones you have listed) what kind of message does it say to the younger guys fighting for those test spots.
Its says hey i dont have faith in you....
This was a problem England had...we couldnt get away from those players who won the WC, players who were kept on too long and the better performing younger guys and are still recovering from it now....
Experience is only good when the experienced players are actually performing better...

Well Geordie, Heyneke Meyer is having three planning session, first up are the players from the Lions and Cheetahs that he rates, so hopefully he will communicate through to those what his expectations of them are and what they need to do to make the squad.

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
I'd expect him to approach it the way he approached his short tenure at Tigers. He went with experience and got the building blocks for a solid team in first (similar to Lancaster) before starting to try and offer much in terms of player emergence and more expansive options. Using the more experienced players straight from the word go isn't a particularly bad idea as he knows with the the set pieces and the defence will work, putting an established framework out there and then moving youngsters into a couple of positions to freshen things up isn't really very exciting but it's a good way to slowly build a team up with little risk involved.
Lancaster is now mentioned as a man of great forsight despite using players in his first game who were nearly all bloodied by the previous regime and who new each other (the only new caps in the backs were the Sarries unit) and the only new cap in the forwards was a reliable 30 year old from Saints. Nothing remotely imaginative about the selection but it provided a platform for better play and more opportunities for younger players later on in the tournament (new backs coach is going to help!).

I agree completely with what your saying Sam...but im sure there are real quality players in SA who can take the place of these players and still provide a rock solid base...
It will be interesting to see anyway both England and SA in a state of rebuilding...should be a great series...

Whoa emack! Big call there. PDV was very special and it'd be hard to trump him in the fiasco stakes. I reckon this could be SAs year as they have a heap of players playing well in super15, and with a coach that isn't PDV, things wil no doubt click into place. Pieterson at full back? Rate this guy, he's one to watch. Percy clone with a boot, brave tackler and a running game as well.

It just makes for good debate I think Meyer would be naive to think a largely Bulls templated style will win at International level and he's probably getting this message loud and clear if 606v2 comments are reflected elsewhere.

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
If he is consulting for advice etc of these players fine,to say SA are doing fine in Super 15 is one thing. To ignore the fact that NZ are doing as well if not better is
another. The Chiefs by concentrating on getting the basics right are doing fine,Crusaders are starting to fire Carter and McCaw yet to make an impact.
PDV made a big mistake using NH based players, they were off the pace,is Meyer going the same way ?many of those mentioned are or were over the top
or in some cases plain embarrassing.NO ONE underates the depth of SA talent BUT from the Planet Rugby article it seems Meyer is just going to pick the old guard.Smit over DuPlessis?etc.

Will Francois Steyn be back by then? I'd imagine he will slot into 12 if available, JP at 13?

He seemed to commenting on a perceived weakness at lock rather than wholesale vets team. I don't think he'd be foolish enough to bring back the second best SA hooker at Sarries over Bismark.

Yeah, Emack is just being facecious.
I know Meyer has been talking to Victor, but if Victor is going to come back he will have to gain match fitness very quickly, there are less than 8 weeks left before the Test series starts, so if he wants Matfield he will have to join a franchise to get some form back.

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
I don´t think the absence of Fourie is good news Biltong. DeVilliers yes because of his unfortunate associations with his name and his lack of form either at inside centre or on the wing (a typical out of the square and out of his mind selection).
F Steyn seems the best option at 12 so who best to complement him. Do you go for someone a little more physical and robust on defence or do you go for someone super fast and can link well with the outside backs. The latter option seems a step too far away from the conservative side.

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
SA could go with:
9.Hougaard
10.M Steyn
11.Habana
12.F Steyn
13.JP Pieterson
14.whichever flyer is in form (the Boks have enough to choose from)
15.Lambie
That would give good creative options (3 play makers) and intelligent runners to hit the gaps without showing any real weakness other than possibly Lambie under the high ball (England don't have the kick chase organisation to work that anyway).

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
I am only going by what was written on Planet Rugby,NO I am not being facetious?Matfield unlikely, ditto Smit.BUT Botha,Steenkamp,DuPreez,Franz Steyn I would think are very much in the frame according to the article. It is a fact players chosen by PDV for 3Ns NH were palpably not up with the current
SH teams.Compare the Franz Steyn in the 2010 3Ns,long hair, overweight, and unfit with his RWC form.I have always thought it is a mistake to pick players overseas outside the Sh enviroment.Which is why I am glad the AllBlacks don`t do so they`ve got it RIGHT!!!!!

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
Not sure if this accurate, but heard on NZ radio sport that Matfield is set to join the Sharks and that he is to become SA captain. This may be hogwash, you never know with radio as it's hard to determine the source of info and could be just speculation.

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
alan, in your example you used Smit, there is no talk of him being approached and it is a definite impossibility that he will be asked to come back.
Frans Steyn is 25 years old, and by no means a has been, he is coming back to SA anyway and sounds like he is going back to the sharks. He was also one of our top players at the RWC, so I would LOVE for him to come back, Matfield has been asked and he is considering it and will only play for the Bulls, he said so yesterday.
Bakkies Botha, Gurthro Steenkamp, Fourie du Preez might, I hope Fourie du Preez doesn't come back as he has lost his 2009 pre injury form and has never been the same, experienced or not, Steenkamp I am in two minds about. Bakkies, might as well stay where he is.

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
some more news on Heyneke Meyers's plans.
It seems Heyneke Meyer has already been setting up structures more advanced than the ever before.
From reports he and Rassie Erasmus has set up a system whereby players are up to speed with what he expects from them ahead of the England Test series, including game plans, individual skills and a number of small improvements each player would need to work on.
They have already started setting up the structures, short and long term goals that will benefit SA Rugby and all the Franchise players from the new unified structure that SARU wants in place for its international and national teams.
For the first time at the three planned camps, the players will be informed as to where they rank in the pecking order, what and where they need to improve their individual skills and game and how long they have to do it, and most importantly what he is expecting from them.
Meyer and Erasmus have already set up a system to track player statistics, and other than walking through his game plan for the England series, they have had one-on-one meetings with all 30 players present in Johannesburg to let them know where they stand. This system will eventually include an online database where players can log in and download drills and plays so that they understand them when they get to the national camp.
Apparently this system has been running in NZ for some time already and the collective aim where the All blacks come first is well documented.
Erasmus will help Meyer in the long-term set up similar structures for all the national age-group levels, so that players are given individual skills coaching and analysis from the national set-up so they are up to speed when they reach the national team.
“Rassie already started doing some work for me behind the scenes and for the first time we have statistics on all the players. He will sit with me on the one-on-ones and we will be able to discuss with every player where they stand in relation to the national team,” Meyer explained.
“Say its Pat Cilliers for instance, I’d be able to tell him where he’s graded in relation to the other props, what he must do to improve and with three weeks left what chance he has of making the squad. Rassie will be a big help in this, and we both agree that if SA Rugby has a strong technical committee, we can produce analysis that is more substantial.”
All I can say is it sounds much more progressive than what we had before. I like the idea that players know where they are in the pecking order and why, this could only benefit us if this type of transparency is the method in which Meyer is going to run the Springbok team.

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
Gentlemen, take my comments for what you like i don`t do WUMS!!!!!.At his appointment the new Bok Coach, made statements about wanting to involve Overseas players.Smit and Matfield WERE included in the Planet Rugby report,Matfield HAS been mentioned in a stopgap role at Lock. Many players based Overseas were picked during the PDV era, most including Smit,Matfield,Steyn,Montgomery,Butch James included underperformed inthat period.ALL were considered Good or Great Players BUT they were outside the team loop at the time.Frans Steyn is an excellent player BUT he was`nt fit or on form in 2010 3Ns.THE true Steyn was shown in the Rwc pre -injury,considering he is only just returned from injury [metaphoricaly speaking] don`t expect to much.Matfield took a long time to re-adjust some former AllBlacks NEVER showed there former form after returning.
The idea of giving Coaches and prospective players what is expected in the Bok gameplan and environment makes perfect sense. That has been the ALLBLACK PATTERN for years. My opinions are as valid as any here,BUT I am not arrogant enough to think they are always right.I speak my mind take it as you wish,I seldom joke about things EXCEPT when the thread is obviously a joke like one of Biltongs recent threads.

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
Alan,Ii haven't seen Smit's name mentioned anywhere in the media.
from what I understand the two players he really wants is Matfield and Fourie du Preez.

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
Biltong,to be fair he said he was TALKING to overseas and retired players,Smit and Matfield were mentioned along with the others.Smit was probably just for advice,Matfield has only just retired .He was touted as being signed by the Sharks on a temporary basis and you have injury problems at capped Locks?
DuPreez has returned from his Japan stint, what he`s like maybe like Nonu jaded from non-stop Rugby.AS I say OVERSEAS Players HAVE`NT worked i n the past for reasons i`ve previously given.Obviously the Coach is anxious for a winning season and 3-0 v England would be a good start.BUT if he wants to try new faces now seems a better bet than in the 4Ns.Because believe me the AllBlacks will be fielding there strongest combo, who will be fit and after a 4Ns title.

Yes, but you must not compare what PDV did to what Meyer's intentions are (at least what he says his intentions are)
By the way the sharks thing was media speculation becuase of their crisis at lock, Matfield confirmed esterday the ONLy franchise he will play for if he does come back will be the Bulls.

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
I can only judge by what the man says,Matfield was speculation I don`t have the problem with PDV SA fans have.It seems to me he wanted to change styles his players would`nt let him.Meyer said from the first he intended considering off shore players for selection.Whoever he picks I want a strong Bok side for the AB`s to beat then there wil be no excuses. If the Boks win well it is in the nature of things there only was only 2 really top teams in World Rugby maybe it`s there time again.

I haven't seen many excuses from bok supporters flying around when we lose, and neither from the all black supporters to be honest.
Apart from the matches where each coach decided not to put his best team forward, injuries will always be there, but I haven't used that as an excuse.

Re: Is Heyneke Meyer showing his true colours?
Biltong,I was talking hypothetically about excuses,as to not your best side. IF a Coach can`t produce a decent team from the 5 Super Franchises.THEN He should`nt accept the job.
