The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Edinburgh
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat. The pub has ventured to Edinburgh, as the team has made their first ever Heineken Cup Semi Final.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Martyn Williams, Shane Williams, Paddy Jackson, Paul O'Connell and Tim Visser.

So Mick, how long can the GAA hold out as amateurs faced with the inevitable loss of talent? (I'm not advocating change or otherwise, I am genuinely interested in the debate as an outsider)

Rodders, before I make a bit of an eejit of myself I've been contacted at work by a fella with your name from Derry.
Is it you?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Edinburgh
Hmm, I dunno. I'm looking at them and thinking, when was the last time I actually read/watched/listened to them? If it's been more than 2 years, I think I'm getting shot of them. Can always get the music on spotify or something anyways.

Glas,
To me it looks like they will be fine in terms of crowd attendance and the survival of the games etc but just the players may not be as good.
Crowds will still turn out to watch Dublin, Kerry, Cork, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Galway, Armagh etc etc etc etc etc even if the team isn't as good.
The players aren't paid anything anyway so the GAA wont be buying in anyone to replace those who left.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Edinburgh
But you wouldn't have the physical CD, the artefact. I still think that matters, although not as much as the actual music, of course.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Edinburgh
oh aye, I'd agree with taht completely! Bbut I've got some shocking cd's in my collection, of artists I just don't like any more. Things like my Queen albums etc, I would never ever part with.
My biggest trouble is going to be with my books. My brother took a suitcase full of them back home on Tuesday and it barely looks like I've gotten rid of any. Going to be tough tough to decide which ones I'm not going to keep.

I've never thrown / given away a book and I don't think I ever would. They take up a lot of space, but they're worth it. You never know when you might want to read one of them.

No I know Lucky, I don't want to give any away, but I honestly don't think my things will fit into my Dad's car when he comes to pick me up, so some things are just going to have to go Think I might actually leave the books till last, hopefully can get rid of other stuff first so there's still room for 'em.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Edinburgh
That's tough, Dreamer. I suppose there are some books I could give away if I had to, but I would have to be forced into it. Could you leave some of them with a friend in Cardiff and collect them at a later date?

I'm ok thanks, dreamer. It would have been last year's HC final when I last saw you.
I should be in the Diff on the Friday of the beer fest (8th June), and again around August if Ealing's proposed pre season friendly happens.

Lucky - I may have to seriously consider doing that I think.
Hound - I shall have to see if I can make it up to the Diff on the June date then, would be lovely to get to see you again

It's a tough one all right Lucky. I have 7 45 litre plastic bins full of books sitting in my parents' garage back home - and a 2 metre bookcase full in London (I think there's only 2 or 3 novels that I own duplicate copies of). One of the joys of having a Kindle has been acquiring electronic copies of some of the books that have been half a world away for 6 years (Dreamer, I got to re-read the Belgariad again recently, still love it).

That must have been terrible Kiwi, having books but not being able to read them!
A fair few of my books haven't even been read yet. but they're there when I want to get started on them. Plus, I'm a sucker for charity shops.

The book I have read most often is Kane & Abel by Jeffery Archer.
KIWI - would you recommend a Kindle over convetional books?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Edinburgh
Kiwi - ah brilliant, I just finished off the last of the Mallorean just the other week. That and the Belgariad are two series' that I never get tired of reading. Eddings' best stuff I reckon, am not a huge fan of his other books, they just get a bit samey to me.
and aaah the kindle. I can't bring myself to like it, although I do see that it has it's uses
Lucky - there's this 2nd hand book shop in one of the arcades round the corner from me, Troutmark books I think it's called, I could spend hours in there (and have done) and as a result, my 'to read' list is now rather quite long!

Here's a question. Has anyone here ever read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.
I read it two and a half years ago. I still can't decide whether I liked it or not.

Books about the age in which I grew up (well, started growing up, cos we all know that I have no intention of completing the journey): Iain Banks
Books that make me laugh out loud: Colin Bateman (would love to know a northern Irish view on his works)
Books that are deliciously quirky: Christopher Brookmyre
Timeless books: Tolkein (even if that is a cliché)

Lucky, its a book about two Czech cousins who move to USA due to the Nazis. They get out in time and publish a very popular anti Nazi comic book in NYC.
It deals with how their years in USA affect them - in terms of money, antisemitism, homosexuality etc.
It won the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 and there was talk of a movie involving Toby Maguire and Natalie Portman.

I would recommend it as well as conventional books - there's a time and place for both. I spend 90 minutes or more each weekday on the tube, I find reading the Kindle or a newspaper much better there (plus you're not wearing a book out in your bag). Sitting on the couch at home a book is better.
And having the Kindle for the nice long flights down-under saves carrying 5 or more paperbacks if you read at the speed I do.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Edinburgh
Asbo a good quirky book that I enjoyed is The Terrible Privacy of Maxwell Sim.
Its a good read. Very funny, down to earth. About a guy from Watford in his 40s who is driving up to Scotland and has all kinds of small mishaps along the way going slightly mad driving along on his own in his car.
Very funny stuff. I dont usually do "funny" books. They arent my style

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Edinburgh
Tolkien is never cliche Asbo! Although I might think that as he's my favourite favourite author. Read Roverandom by him for the first time this year, and it was fantastic, can't believe I'd missed out on reading it when I was younger!
I like the idea of a book club.

That Kavalier and Clay book sounds really good, Stag. The last book I read was The Murder Room by P D James. I was really getting into it, then the puppy came along and I haven't picked it up since.

I just finished reading the Bridge trilogy by William Gibson. Pretty good, by and large, but not life changing.

There's room for non-life-changing books, Notch. God Bless You, Mr Rosewater by Kurt Vonnegut isn't life-changing but I enjoyed reading it. Slaughterhouse 5, on the other hand, is one of those books I'd evangelise about.

I've just started re-reading the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series by Tad Williams. Only read them once, and that was about 7 years ago now, so long enough that I'll have forgotten a fair bit of the details so I can enjoy them all over again

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Edinburgh
A good book that is actually quite a manageable size if big books daunt you is The Relucantant Fundamentalist.
Its written in a very unique way I thought. Essentially you are a character in the story. The narrator is adressing you personally and your trying to work out the context in which he is talking to you until the ending when even when it is releaved you can take your own interpretations as to what happens.
Equally the Cloud Atlas is another that I was intrigued by.
Anyone read either of them?

Rugby is certainly on everyone’s lips in work. I’ve gone for 3 cuppa’s today and everytime I go someone has mentioned the game to me.
Even one French guy was saying he can’t wait for the game, he’ll be watching at home in his Leinster jersey.
Deadly buzz….
