Bobby Skinstad says "sorry"
First topic message reminder :
For those who didn't watch the match between the Sharks and Chiefs on the weekend, there was an up and under that was chased by Lelia Masaga and Lwazi Mvovo was the reciever, the charge tackle wasn't executed very well and Masaga arrived into the tackle with no arms and their two heads and chests collided in an unpleasant ending where both players were bloodied.
During the commentating Bobby skinstad ex springbok now turned commentator had this comment to make "Lelia Masaga has gone head high in an absolute coconut tackle straight onto Lwazi Mvovo and tried to take his head off,"
When Chief's loose forward Scott Waldrom tweeted: "Does the SA commentator know that the term 'coconut tackle' is actually a derogatory term?"
Skinstad replied: "Heard the term and thought it meant aiming for the 'nut' - no harm meant sorry."
Twitter user@Broncos_NRL tweeted "coconut is a racist term to describe a pacific islander, it's like calling a black man the N word".
You really need to register for a multi cultural course these days to be a public figure as anything you say can be trned against you.

Beef? You learn something new every day. Was in SA in 2004 and couldn't get enough of the stuff but I thought it was made of antelopes or some such. I really liked the chip van's in Bloem stadium that sold squid rings.mmmmmmm

I absolutely love the stuff. I can sit there mindless chewing away for hours. My best mate growing up was from Pretoria so I was hooked from an early age. Once a month I make the trip to Springbok Foods to load up on Biltong, Borewors etc I have to self-impose a one month interval then it forces me to try and pace myself but it's usually all gone in a week or so.

If you love boerewors you must try it with pap and sous. Stiff maize porridge and a tomato and onion relish.

Slow - cooked in a casserole works well
Or just barbecue (barbecued crocodile OTOH tastes like chicken)

Kangaroo is delicious, very low in fat if a little gamey.
Guinea pig tastes like pork and llama tastes like veal for what it's worth.

Re: Bobby Skinstad says "sorry"
I've had Macaw before. It tasted divine. The only problem was it kept moving to the other side of the plate and got tangled up with the sides.
I think there are sufficient Polynesian and Melanesian players plying their rugby trade around the world. Just walk up to one and say you coconuts sure can move fast sometimes for being so laid back most of the time and then get back to us if he found it offensive. Of course I am not advocating such a move or the use of the term. I don't want to be tried for conspiring to murder or maim. Just making the point that it doesn't matter if you don't find it offensive. Do you want to risk offending someone who may be offended by it?
Anyway back to the snack thread. The Spanish are not squeamish about their food. They love entrails and lots of things you'd probably think were best thrown out. I admire their sense of thrift especially in these times but I'm more a flesh eater rather than a guts eater. Call me picky but I think spleens should be left inside an animal when it dies and not transferred to my dinner plate.

Kia
I was thinking of using that angle the other day on this thread.
Go to any bar, nightclub in Auckland call any of the huge Polynesian bouncers on the door a coconut, now if you did nt know it was offensive to address a Polynesian with that word, then I assure you, you very soon will.
Cpaistanio.....Ist chance.
Skinstad........2nd chance
Next big ignorant loud mouthed South African.......No Chance.

The next time a South African makes a derogatory, inflamatory remark against another race of people they will use ignorance as their defence.
It very much supports everything Ive said previously.
BTW I cant see half your picture.

Re: Bobby Skinstad says "sorry"
Google Stephen Fry on offending people for the picture. Right so you can class an entire nation as big ignorant loud mouthed people and that is fine, but using the name of a fruit is apparently racist? When clearly he wasn't using it in a racist context? How does that one work? Couldn't that be considered "offensive" towards South Africans? Though biltongbek clearly is mature enough to not get all whiny about it.

Sometimes you have to fight fire with a bit of fire before people start beginning to understand.
So what your saying is thats wrong to call a black man a spook, coon a golliwog a N.....,etc a Jew a hymie or a yid,a chinaman a chink,a ching chong,a slope, an Indian a curry muncher A Hispanic a spick etc etc etc .
But its quite OK to call a Polynesian a Coconut because its a fruit!!!!!

Re: Bobby Skinstad says "sorry"
Nope, that isn't what I said at all.. but where did anyone call a Polynesian a coconut? I have read on this page the "oh I would like you to walk up and say coconut to a Polynesian" etc. Why are people using that as an example? Why would saying the word coconut be wrong? Just because someone uses the word does that immediately mean it is directed at someone? Who called one a coconut?Someone described a tackle as a "coconut tackle" clearly referring to the head on collision. But of course people like a bit of drama and take it out of context, when they know for a fact he doesn't mean it as any harm to anyone.

Re: Bobby Skinstad says "sorry"
I think this thread has run it's course, it proves there are not only ignorant South Africans, but they are loudmouthed and to top it all off, Bobby Skinstad is a slow learner, as he should have read more NZ newspapers when he was a teenager.
