First topic message reminder :

Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat. The pub has ventured to Cross Keys, as their team is in the British and Irish Cup Final.

The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Richie McCaw, George Smith, Robert Nash,Billy Holland, John Muller, Greg Laidlaw, Aurelien Rougerie, Leo Cullen, Rhys Thomas and Iestyn Thomas.

Edinburgh, I really do feel so Sad for them, just so impressed by them, they've completely won me over! Those knock ons though...man they're going to hurt. Spoken from someone who knows.

I had them down to win by 3 on SG, got the point margin right, just not the team!!

The first was even better I think Thomond, although just as frustrating from an Edinburgh pov with all the knock ons!

Jesus it was. Terrible for an underage team to have that many knock ons in a big game but for a pro team? Terrible. I feel sorry for them but that was inexcusable.

I'd agree with that, Dreamer, it was a great first half. You'll also get to see Stephen Ferris's no-yellow-card, Thomond.

I still can't believe he didn't get yellowed for that Lucky, twas baffling,.

Thomond - what made the knock ons worse was that so often it was when Edinburgh weren't even being put under pressure! They will be kicking themselves, that's a final gone begging for them. Man, that must hurt so much Sad

Was that swiping the ball from the scrum half for the penalty? Saw that, it was ridiculous how 1F didn't get a yellow. You have a PM btw.

And replied, Thomond!

Willy, he has that ability to never look flustered, to make the game look so simple, which in essence it is, but when the pressure's on, only a few special players can do it.

Edinburgh will be gutted with their handling at key moments, but they should be proud of their contribution to a classic second half (I managed to see that). Ulster used their strengths well and played textbook cup rugby. I think they will contribute fully to the final, whoever they meet. The ERC is the best club competition in the World in any sport.

Evening all. We had Hoog and Aongus with us for Ealing's 42-5 win v B&S and then in the pub for the HC game.

Well done Ulster, and there was one very happy familiy of Ulster fans in the pub. Ferris should have been carded for a blatant piece of interference though, when the game was close, but overall Ulster deserved the win.

Edinburgh's handling was reminiscent of Scotland during the 6N.

For me that's a red for Ferris due to the extraordinary cynicism, the context and the location. He was on his stomach, he knew he was on his stomach, he was out of the game and there is no 'interpretation' that could save him. Poor, poor decision not to even give him a yellow.

The rain was a pain dreamer, but we have two new Ealing fans Wink

Jugs of beer throughout the game saw us through Smile

The guys enjoyed The Wheatsheaf, especially as there was about 30 people watching the rugby, and about 6 watching the football on the other screen.

Yahoo

Good day. I knew Ulster would win at half time, because we were very much below par and Edinburgh still couldn't get their noses in front. I knew we were going to come out firing after half time.

Edinburgh were very good I thought, a very good rugby team but not yet a championship winning team. Even though Ulster struggled to play the kind of rugby we are capable of all afternoon we scored when we needed to score. Edinburgh didn't get the scores at the big moments that would have turned it.

We were on the receiving end of a similar game away against Northampton last year were we were squeezed out by a more physical, experienced, clinical side; despite us playing the more expansive rugby we couldn't deal with them getting our set piece in trouble and outmuscling us.

I'm sure Edinburgh will gain a lot from this game and be back stronger. You have to go through pain and learn hard lessons before you can succeed in this tournament. I hope they do. The Heineken Cup needs to be more than 2 or 3 countries dominating.

That said, Ulster have several extra gears in terms of performance we need to achieve to win the final. We can play better than we showed today.

I'm glad to see there is consensus between Edinburgh fans and Ulster fans- on Roman Poite! Not his best game this afternoon, the game suffered for it I thought.

I don't know what Terblanche did though- thats not a complaint, they genuinely didn't show a replay in the stadium and it was on the far side of the stadium. What did he slap a guy?

We missed Chris Henry so much today. He was a massive loss- so hope he's fit for Twickenham. We lacked a groundhog to counter Rennie.

Post by Guest Sat Apr 28, 2012 10:37 pm

from the linesman's position it looked a punch to Ross Ford who was on top of the ruck (he had his hand on Treblanche's shoulder but wasn't doing anything/interfering with play I don't think), from the other angle it looked a slap. Right call either way I thought.

Poite got key decisions wrong (which I won't go into or else I'll end up on a rant like last weekend!), but I thought the game was high tempo, high passion and just for the sheer effort put in, I loved it Smile

Where did you think he went wrong?

He missed a huge amount of handling errors on both sides unfortunately- forward passes, backrows breaking early from the scrum- a lot got by him.

I was stunned Ferris got off without a yellow, but thats just how it goes I suppose. I can forgive one wrong big call if he's getting everything else right but he didn't do great...

I don't want to give the guy a hard time, just think he hasn't done himself justice in his last two HC games. I hope Nigel Owens gets the final.

he pinged a lot of the backrows breaking early though too, guess you could look at it that it was better to let a few things go to get a flowing game otherwise it would have been an awful stop start affair! Tis a difficult one to judge that.

All in all, despite two big mistakes, I thought he had a fair game. Not sure if it was Final material though.

Hope you recorded it so you can watch it back. Such a tense, nervy affair, proper HEC SF stuff, I thought it was v good Smile

Brian McLaughlin sums it up for me;

“We’re very pleased to have won but disappointed with the way we played the game. We’re looking forward to getting to Twickenham now, we’re a better rugby side than that.

Its hard not to feel we didn't deliver the kind of performance we're capable of- there's definitely a lot of improvement in this Ulster team.

That is a good summary Notch. I think if you guys play like you did today in the Final, you won't win. Was amazed at how easily Edinburgh could work the ball up the pitch, complete opposite as to how you played against Munster and just stopped them in their tracks.

Ooo Wigan, you lovely lovely team, that is some great football on show there.

Yeah our defence was soft, we didn't do well at the breakdown, our tactical kicking was poor and we didn't retain possession well enough. But you have to give credit to Edinburghs continuity play.

2 stars out of 5 for Ulster for me- and we still won. Can we have a mention for Declan Fitzpatrick, Rory Best and Tom Court? Sometimes the big lads in the tight five steer you home- they all had storming games.

Especially Declan Fitzpatrick playing just his second game in 5 months after a major neck injury- and filling some pretty big shoes clap

Hmm, I'd have given them 3, and Edinburgh 4.

Aye Fitzpatrick was very good. Didn't show up much in the loose for me but was super super solid in the scrum which is what he had to do. Cross had a v good game for Edinburgh too. Lots of stand out performances really.
