Clydesdale Bank 40 Discussion Thread
First topic message reminder :
The CB40 can be a damp squid of a competition. The format is wrong (debatably), the picture of a final on a damp September day in front of a half-full crowd is in my head, and there are too many dead games, leading to counties fielding virtual 2nd XIs with regularity.
But that is what we have, and the tournament starts tomorrow with a repeat of Surrey v Somerset.
The three groups were drawn as follows:
A: Netherlands, Leicestershire Foxes, Worcestershire Royals, Lancashire Lightning, Middlesex Panthers, Essex Eagles, Gloucestershire Gladiators
B: Scottish Saltires, Durham Dynamos, Hampshire Royals, Surrey, Welsh Dragons, Somerset, Nottinghamshire Outlaws
C: Unicorns, Derbyshire Falcons, Yorkshire, Kent Spitfires, Warwickshire Bears, Sussex Sharks, Northamptonshire Steelbacks
Matches to be played over the Bank Holiday weekend are:

I presume Brain is injured. Could this mean a break from drinks waiting tomorrow for Wilson?
Meanwhile, well done to Kartik. A wicket with his second ball!

Glam 68 - 5 off 18. They're just about up with the run rate but those 5 wickets now make us firm favourites.

Run out ends a partnership that was beginning to bring Glam back into the game.... 82 - 6 after 21 overs.

Rain stops play with Glam at 107 - 9 after 26 overs.
If that's it for the day I'd suggest messrs Duckworth and Lewis won't have to work too hard to work out the winner....

Glam 107 -9 as players go off for rain. Unlikely to return according to Churchy. My fears at the half-way point prove unfounded as we seem guaranteed a comfortable D/L win.
Fine debut for Kartik who takes 4 wickets. A lot left in the bowling tank as well - Batty didn't bowl at all whilst a Spriegel and Brain combo bowled just one over.

Difficult to make a definitive judgment from just a few clips but Kartik looked in a confident groove.

Fine performance by all accounts today from Durham in their convincing win against Notts.
Shame the rain prevented Surrey doing the same against Hants . I've heard that Tremlett might play in Tuesday's game against Scotland.

Essex dominating against Gloucs
Gloucs are 118-4 from 29 overs..
Phillips has been brought on in the 30th over and has spun it straight away
Mills bowled seriously quick as per usual

Essex home thanks to a Bopara 100... interesting...
Another win for the dutch, in fact given the 2 squads a Leicestershire win would have probably been the more surprising result.

Gary Wilson was unbeaten on 121 at stumps yesterday on the first day of Surrey's second eleven three dayer against Middlesex at Guildford.
He then gets retired, yanked out of the seconds' match and joins up with the first team squad at the Oval for today's CB 40 against Scotland only to be left on the bench!

Meanwhile I fear the match v Scotland is likely to fall victim to the weather. Started to rain south of London. Pity since we are well on top with Scotland at 59 for 4 off 15 overs.

'Twas proper rain! And yes, not the most thrilling match though Wakely made a fluent 80-odd. A shame that the more interesting part of the day - Derbyshire's batting v Northants bowling was the bit wiped out. Northants's batting quite literally puts me to sleep!!

Re: Clydesdale Bank 40 Discussion Thread
Oh dear!
Arrived five minutes late to find Davies and Roy back in the hutch. The first ball I saw Wilson was caught behind! If it wasn't over as a contest by then, it was a few minutes later when we were 8-5.
Applause broke out around the ground when we reached double figures.
Spriegel batted sensibly and stuck at it commendably so we were able to get into three figures. I dread to think how quickly and cheaply we would have been skittled without him. As the Corporal says, it further enhanced his credentials to play in the CC.
Notts bowled and fielded very well - Reid was exemplary behind the stumps. Someone by me accurately referred to Notts as ''an extremely well drilled outfit''. However, other than Spriegel and to limited extents Ansari and Batty, we just didn't apply ourselves enough.
To Surrey's credit, they stuck at it with the ball and in the field. Unfortunately, the game was already up by then. When little Jimmy Taylor walked to the crease, some joker cried out: ''They're letting their mascot have a bat!''.
