Clydesdale Bank 40 Discussion Thread
First topic message reminder :
The CB40 can be a damp squid of a competition. The format is wrong (debatably), the picture of a final on a damp September day in front of a half-full crowd is in my head, and there are too many dead games, leading to counties fielding virtual 2nd XIs with regularity.
But that is what we have, and the tournament starts tomorrow with a repeat of Surrey v Somerset.
The three groups were drawn as follows:
A: Netherlands, Leicestershire Foxes, Worcestershire Royals, Lancashire Lightning, Middlesex Panthers, Essex Eagles, Gloucestershire Gladiators
B: Scottish Saltires, Durham Dynamos, Hampshire Royals, Surrey, Welsh Dragons, Somerset, Nottinghamshire Outlaws
C: Unicorns, Derbyshire Falcons, Yorkshire, Kent Spitfires, Warwickshire Bears, Sussex Sharks, Northamptonshire Steelbacks
Matches to be played over the Bank Holiday weekend are:

good win for Surrey today! although as others have said, not as comfortable as against Somerset!... Good day alround for me as I managed to get down to Bognor and see the Rocks beat Dulwich Hamlet 1-0 in the Rymans South Play off final! - Rymans Premier league here we come!
It was absolutely freezing down at Bognor... I had 3 layers on, hat gloves the lot... I must say... the thought of watching cricket in this weather does not appeal... so well done to all those hardy souls in Edingburgh today!

Most of the matches in today's round face a delayed start. Notts/Scotland the only one to start on time....

Only two Group B matches in progress atm. Notts not having things all their own way against Scotland with the score at 105 for 4 after 23 overs. Glam only just started against Hants in a reduced overs match.

Scots 94 - 0. But need to watch the run rate which has crept up to 6.

I fear a middle order collapse for the Jocks as they look to accelerate. Mind you, it'll be a good result for Surrey if Notts lose this match ....

Worcs managed a total of 172-4 in 27 overs against the Dutch at Kidderminster. Runs from Solanki (60), Cameron (38) and Mitchell (31n.o.).
The Dutch are now 7-1 off 3 overs, Jack Shantry with the wicket.

Meanwhile rain delays play in the Netherlands/Worcs game.
Gloucs starting briskly in reply to Middlesex. A Gloucs win could provide some small compensation to Chris from Stroud for the selection of Batty....

Scotland's win over Notts on D/L confirmed.
Meanwhile, the much maligned Batty sees Gloucs over the line along with Benny Howell who puts in another decent performance.

Very disappointed with Middlesex today.
The batting was poor, though not terrible, but both the bowling and Dexter's captaincy were poor. Corey Collymore, who has never really impressed me, was awful.
Scotland's win over Notts is a bigger surprise than either Dutch win.

Shelsey - what did you think of Benny Howell? A reliable source on the Surrey supporters website was disappointed we didn't pick him up when released by Hants and flags him as one to watch.

Scotland's win by D/L was well justified, but in my opinion a tad fortunate. They still had a fair way to go to the target and the required run rate had been gradually climbing. Easy to envisage a collapse as they attempted to up the pace....

Shaped up well, and looked very calm. I've seen him make a hundred on TV before and was hugely surprised that Hampshire included a young and talented player in their winter clear-out. Though someone on Cricinfo said that Howell might not have been happy with his lack of Championship opportunities.
I would say that Surrey wouldn't have been the right place for him to go. There is already plenty of competition for places, and I struggle to see how he would get into either the Championship or one-day sides. But at Gloucestershire he is already an integral part of the team. It looks like they've picked up a bargain.

Thanks, Shelsey. Not surprised by your supportive view of Benny Howell's batting. I also tend to agree with your final para. Howell wouldn't get in Surrey's Championship or one-day sides currently. Things may well change before long - possible international call ups, injuries and Ramps' retirement. However, from his point of view, he's better off where he is now playing first eleven cricket.Shelsey93 wrote:guildfordbat wrote:Shelsey - what did you think of Benny Howell? IMO collymore is more of a f/c bowler than a one day bowler to be honest.

Surrey have made 221/7 from their 40 overs against Durham which is definitely below par at the Oval but is a good fightback after losing the top 3 cheaply. Maynard scored a composed 77 off 94 and Ansari got his best ever 60* from 54 balls to underline just how much talent he has.

A few wobbles along the way for Surrey but a very comfortable victory in the end.
Throughout there seemed someone able to step in and step up. Maynard and Ansari with the bat. Then Spriegel with the ball, taking two two quick wickets as Durham threatened an early charge. Thereafter, a fine team bowling and fielding performance.
Still need to keep our feet on the ground but things looking good again in CB40.

Unicorns have pulled a surprise over Kent. Timely considering they need to justify their position in the competition ahead of a likely re-structure next year.

What a win for Hampshire. 3 in 3 now.
Carbs with a Century, Dimi with brilliant figures of 2-17 off 8 overs. This format could really suit us.

Not sure the dutch qualify as minnows anymore after their creditable performance last year and the arrivals of Myburgh and Van der Gughten to strengthen their line-up. They now have 4 quality batsmen in Myburgh, Swart, Cooper and Barresi, and Borren and Bukhari who can up the scoring rate. Seelar is a decent SLA and VdG a good seamer. Bukhari is also a decent county trundler.
If they also had Kervezee and RTD (their best 2 batsmen) they'd really be a force to be reckoned with.
Essex currently struggling at 20/3

Also Cameron Borgas, who is an overseas for this tournament. Really it is no surprise to see them winning matches at domestic level. Most of their players have played at World T20s and/or World Cups and not disgraced themselves, and a number of the others have played state cricket in Australia. The merits of playing a team full of Aussie state players are questionable, but Cooper, Borgas, Swart etc. would certainly get into English county sides. As would Stephan Myburgh.

Surrey's painful effort against Glam comes to a halt at 173 for 9. Davies batted well earlier on and the Brain held things together later on but all the other batsmen failed to make any impact. Sounds as though wicket is on the slow side.
I missed Surrey's win against Durham while away on patrol. Excellent performance from Anasari.

Hi Corporal - yes, looked early on like we were going to get a massive score only for it to largely fall away. Glam seem to be pacing it better - am concerned. Fear we may have gone into this one over confident.Corporalhumblebucket wrote:Surrey's painful effort against Glam comes to a halt at 173 for 9. Meanwhile, the conundrum that is Jason Roy continues. Struck a six that Churchy raved about - not only out of the ground but through trees and into the River Taff. ''Probably the biggest six I've ever seen'' - Churchy. ''A terrific shot'' - former Glam legend Don Shepherd. And then? Caught at slip.
Yes, strong performance against Durham. Very comfortable in the end.
