Barrel's Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub & Restaurant, Luderitz
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat. The pub has stayed in Africa this week as part of its build up to the Heineken Cup final, and attached itself to Barrels restaurant in Luderitz, Namibia, known for its beer, Eisbein and sing-a-longs.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Simon Danielli, Federico Aramburu and the possibly Auckland-bound Joe Schmidt.

Is soccer as much about not supporting teams as it is about supporting teams?

You are so right. I've just commented on a post on FB by my nieces husband. He was goading her Man Utd. Supporting cousin about the days results.
Thing is he's a Liverpool supporter. They actually lost today and finished the league below Everton. But he's happy because Man Utd. didn't win the league.

Yeah, Its bad enough being a thieving Scouser Scally... Then, everything they live for - their football team, is crap as well.
So, Man Corporate City, won a meaningless, over-hyped League. Huuurah!

Re: Barrel's Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub & Restaurant, Luderitz
Evening pub, my customer today told me that I "must watch Match of the Day" as it was the best and most dramatic finale to a footie season like ever.
Well, I'm still wide awake and Mrs H is fast asleep and not feeling too well so I thought I'd have a "bit on the side" and try a bit of roundball.
I've just turned it off and come downstairs for a fag and a rant, what an absolute shower of shoite, "players" going down like children hit by trucks!!!!
Have they got no shame for God's sake?!!!!
I hate the feckin game even more now.
At least when rugby players fake a blood injury they get a bent Doctor to feckin cut 'em up...
Not that it's clever or anything, or even honest for that matter, but at least it's feckin real, or close to it...
You all know what I mean.
Well, he was half right, veeeerrrrryyyyyy dramatic darlings.
Someone needs to give their heads a wobble if you ask me, bunch of feckin fairies.
Night pub.

Re: Barrel's Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub & Restaurant, Luderitz
I've had me fag now Rav, and I can honestly say the bit I saw was just feckin disgraceful.
One player shying at the back of another players legs as they are both running and the "kicked at" player (Barton if I remember) gives him a back-hander and he goes down like a sack of shoite, rolling about and calling for his mommy with his last dying breath... until the ref takes an interest; at which point he springs to his feet like a new born lamb, all legs and arms and pointing and stuff, the ref produces a red card for his assailant, and the offy (it was Barton - just checked), gives him a tickle in the ribs at which point he resumes the premature death scene.
Barton walks off and then another player - in a bib appropriately enough - comes onto the pitch to tell him he smells of wee and has no friends, they get a bit shouty at each other and the commentator then starts talking about a lengthy ban!!!!
WHAT THE FECK FOR!!!!????
Nobody threw a punch, tried to poke an eye out, bit, stamped or violated a body cavity of any description, in actual fact nobody and I mean NOBODY. GOT. FECKIN. HURT!!!!!!
Give me 60 seconds and I'd show the nancy-boy wetters an example of feckin pain they'd remember through early-onset Alzheimers.
Plicks.

Morning all
Aside from being let down by my SG picks, the Crusaders and the NZ 7s team (blown apart by Fiji in the quarters yesterday), an amazing weekend.
Just checked my email, and I've won my English soccer premiership tipping comp (that's 6 years out of 8 - not bad for someone who doesn't have a clue - I basically pick the bookies' favourites to win every week) so a nice tidy £100 profit
I'm going back to bed to sleep off my hangover. Laters

No worries billy, Parra will soon join a ruck somewhere, sometime, somehow and be reminded by his fellow players that diving isn't cool.
On another note, these football Managers should at least start thinking about bringing one or two of the WWE wrestlers in to teach these guys how to fall.
You wouldn't want one of them to fake something and then really injure himself because he doesn't know how to fall.

Go on you two, pistols at dawn or just a good scrap, we don't mind
That whole girly display yesterday does make me sick a wee bit in my mouth, such a deplorable sport played by the worst excuse for sportsmen on this planet.
Barton's reaction to the incident ("Still not my proudest moment but who gives a f*ck, we are safe..........and that is all that matters.") just underlines everything I hate about soccer. What a fine example to the young kids who look up to 'professional' footballers. It has become less a sport and more a horrible reality TV show. The fact that his manager backed him up just highlights it all even more.
There rant over. Sorry about that one, readin back on previous rants got me blood boiling

It's almost the opposite case in the NRL.
Some poor fellow nearly gets his block knocked off on the weekend and the judiciary says to the perpetrator this morning - "No case to answer"
There's a doco on here tonight about head injuries in sport. Apparently, someone went looking for some NFL stars from the 70s for a reunion but was horrified to discover that a lot of them are either severely brain damaged or dead.

Will do MrsP. It's on "4 Corners" .... which is similar to "Panorama".
I'll post a link to it (afterwards) so you can watch at your own leisure.
I also heard today that moves are being made to keep more detailed records on players - even when they get a little knock - and to try to impose more stringent rules about how long a player should rest before the next game... or better still, prevent them from playing again if it's a severe injury to the head.

All contact sports I think... but it is based on the US experience described above.
That's what I want to see - what is the protocol and what changes they are recommending.

Linebreaker wasn't there some research recently about the long term effects of repeated concussions done on NFL players?...sure I read something in the past year or so? It made pretty grim reading anyways.

OK sounds interesting. I think the bottom line is money talks in pro sport and if a big name player wants to play through a concussion then they will. I don't see that changing.
Like the amount of times you see players brought round with smelling salts and then they play on.
It's the nature of the beast unfortunately.

I have always wondered who actually gives the players the clean bill of health? I would find it very bad if it was a club doctor with these responsibilities.
