Crouch? Plenty of international experience, and a great scoring record at international level. Deserves his spot ahead of any of the three other strikers besides Rooney (in fact, considering Rooney's going to be missing the first two matches, he probably deserves his spot ahead of Rooney too).

He's already scored against France for England...
I like him, I would have taken him over Holt and Crouch too, and I've been impressed by his work rate and the way he holds the ball as well as winning it in the air.
Carroll is a beast on his day. If you watch him and how he gets in the air compared to Crouch he gives very few free kicks away. I would take him happily. If he shows the determination he has for Liverpool the last 5 or 6 games then he'llbe an asset, and it's no coincidence that his upturn in form has coincided with Gerrards return to the fold.
That's from a Newcastle fan who thinks he's a dirty gypo!

Re: England Euro 2012 squad
Downing? Brilliant selection - no goals and - more pertinently - no assists in the Premier league in this last season.
Very little pace in the midfield - Parker, Millner, Barry and Lampard are not exactly the speediest.
Very limited in attack unless the midfielders get the goals. Welbeck is promising but inexperienced, Rooney cant play until the third game and Carroll had a poor season until right at the end.
Hart in goal looks OK, though !

Is that confirmed?
If so it confirms Terry has NO PLACE in the squad as he can't be there for his leadership qualities which is the only thing going for him based on his appalling form this season.

yeah just seen it confirmed on the BBC page. I refer you to one of my previous posts: shouldn't be in the team, hasn't done well at all as England captain in the past, but at least he's popular with the media (McNulty must be happy...)

Re: England Euro 2012 squad
Stewart Downing is arguably the best crosser of the ball available to England.
Ashley Young is maybe the best.
With Downing a close second.
He's a creative player with a good cross
Arguably the best in the squad
I think its a good decision to take him. It's how you think an individual will operate within the England team, not how they operate for their club.

Not terrible, although as always a few questionable selections.
Keepers - Hart is clear no 1, so the others are only there in case of injury. With Robinson and Foster making themselves unavailable, it's about as good a choice of back-ups as any.
LB - Cole and Baines pick themselves
RB - Is RIchards carrying an injury? If not, I can't understand how Glen Johnson gets selected ahead of him. Phil Jones is a good squad selection, as is Smalling (covering RB, CB and in Jones case also CM)
CB - A bit more controversial. Cahill is an easy pick, but I don't get Lescott and Terry ahead of Jagielka. I can only assume Ferdinand isn't considered fit enough.
CM - Too conservative a selection, in picking 4 30+ guys who have achieved little for England in the past. I'm not too unhappy with Parker being there, although his form in the second half of the season fell away, and one of Gerrard or Lampard should be included - a coin toss for me as to which one. Barry though... OK, so Wilshire is injured, but surely we have better ball-playing midfielders available (Carrick for one).
Wide midfield - Only reason I can think of for including Downing is that he is the only left footed left sided player available with any international experience (Adam Johnson tends to play wide right). Otherwise, seems a reasonable selection - The Ox deserves a chance, Walcott's pace and ability to play through the middle is helpful, and Ashley Young is a decent player on either flank (although his last England experience playing as a withdrawn forward was a major failure).
Forwards - Really shows what a paucity of selection options there are. Rooney clearly is a class player and has to be included despite his suspension. Beyond that though, it's a bit of a lottery. Defoe I assume is there because of his international experience and that he could be useful off the bench if we need something a bit different. Carroll was a selection that was between him, Crouch and Holt as the big man up front - improving form in the last part of the season and his better pace and mobility probably make Carroll the best choice. Welbeck - for me, he's getting picked because he plays for Man U rather than because he's good enough. Interesting that there are only 4 centre forwards in the squad, which suggests we may well be intending to play with only one up front, which for me would be Carroll in the first couple of matches and Rooney once his suspension ends.

and yet with Carroll, a good header of the ball, in his team, he's managed a grand total of 0 assists from 36 appearances this season

WHAT??!!?!?!?!!?
36 appearances 0 assists is NOT the best crosser available to England.
Young has 6 goals and 7 assists in 25 league appearances.
Adam Johnson has 6 goals and 2 assists despite playing almost exclusively as a sub all season!

Rooney, carroll and downing..
Rooney because he's banned for two games and he was stupid enough to kick out at that player knowing full well of the rules and that he would have been sent off..
Caroll is dreadful.
Downing is dreadful.
