Ortiz vs Canelo's in the running for 15/09/12

Ortiz - 29-3-2 (22 KO's) has to get past Lopez in June 23 to be a possible opponent for Alvarez's next fight.

This would be A great fight in my opinion, first Prime athletic fighter Alvarez will be fighting both about 5'9'', Alvarez weigh's in at about 166-7 i fight night where as Ortiz comes around 162-164, so similar size - Excellent fight in my opinion - Huge respect to Golden Boy if they make it

Painful night for Ortiz if that one came off I think. Too open, not skillful enough to beat Canelo.

I would Have alvarez by close decision - remember Ortiz is Fast and Powerfull and Strong - Things Alvarez has never faced before, Alvarez doesn't have the best footwork nor does he have a great defence, He also doesn't work all the round he works in flurries and can be outworked

He hits damn hard though and Canelo isn't exactly the hardest to hit. Would love it if this one was made.

I think Ortiz relys on being a bully and physically more dominant than his opponent. I think against Canelo he loses all that and becomes the smaller, weaker fighter in the match up. Cant see Ortiz outmuscling Alvarez. Alvarez is a far more accurate, and I suspect powerful puncher too. With Ortiz face forward defence I would really fancy Canelo in this one. I think hes better in almost every department. The weight would probably suit him better too.

Great match. Saul coming up against a strong punching fighter who is coming off a loss to the best of his generation. Much depends on the frame of mind Ortiz comes in at. If he's ready and doesn't want to slow dance with Saul he will win. Saul is a great talent but too easy to hit and is a plodder.

Great fight and one I can't wait to see this summer. I fancy Alvarez on decision, I think his shot selection and accuracy will take it's accumulative toll on Victor and it will be a wide UD. Not looking past Ortiz because he will come to fight but I just think Canelo is the more rounded/polished of the two.

Great match up if it happens, I for one fancy Canelo at 154 but Ortiz would come ready to tear it up

I'd give Ortiz a chance if he was a light-middle. Picking a replacement with only two fights at welter sucks dirty bum

Agreed but don't blame Goldenboy for avoiding Trout for this fight. Could never be PPV with Trout, he was so boring last time out. Ideally I want Lara to get a shot but will never happen at this stage

This will be a war, great fight

Canelo is accurate, strong, powerful and well schooled. Ortiz is bullish, powerful, quick and also pretty fragile. Ortiz has put every fighter he has fought except mayweather on the deck. He is a massive welterweight who weighs 162lbs co fight night.

Canelo is too good, too skilled but won't make it that easy. Ortiz has the work rate and power to trouble him and will put Alvarez chin to the question

Goldenboy are as bad as Arum IMO

In house fighters fighting in house fighters, doesn't seem that long ago since Ortiz was fighting a light welter, he isn't in Canelo's league from what I've seen in terms of boxing ability and size, not an excitable match up.

Cheers

If the Ortiz who beat Berto first time round shows up, it could be a very close competitive fight, If the Ortiz who fought Maidana shows up, I see a painful onesided beatdown on route to an 8th round stoppage.

Canelo wins by K.O if its at 154, as for Ortiz you don't get a title shot at 154 by getting KO'd at 147. I know Canelo was given his title but two wrongs don't make a right.

Should be a great fight.
I'm really hoping to see Alvarez show us something special against Ortiz.
I do think Alvarez is a potential future p4p#1.

I think Alvarez will be solid top 5 P4P inside the next 5 years - Although very early to tell, but I think he has clear weaknesses that can be improved - Overall he is very good and allround fighter - he has excellent punching technique

Ortiz to take a beating and stopped mid rounds, don't see how he can win. He's more of the bully type and once he realises he can't bully he quits.

on the undercard Gonzalez vs Ponce De Leon, Jojesito Lopez is no Joke though, he is a decent fighter - not world level - but look beyond him he can make ortiz pay, highly doubt it though, ortiz on 70% should beat Lopez

In terms of weight - he is A huge welterweight, normal add of weight is 8-12 pounds, ortiz adds atleast 15 in his last fight added 17, Canelo is slightly bigger maybe and that's a maybe - they're similar in size

Ortiz weighed 164 vs mayweather and 162 vs Berto

Alvarez weighed 165 vs Mosley and 166 vs cintron

Don't think there is much of a size difference tbh

That was a single punch, he was still dominating the fight, in the maidana fight from round 4 on everyone could this guy maidana is getting the better of ortiz, his own corner were talking about stopping the fight, in that fight ortiz lost the momentum and maidana took charge, in berto fight he was always in charge

Ortiz can only walk forward and try and bully Alvarez but he can't do that. I can't see this going 6 rounds. An easy and early stoppage for Canelo imo.

I think there is chance he was drained against Maidana and physically not as strong. Hes a pretty big welter never mind light welter. Do think he did basically quit in that fight though. And also am not convinced he gave the Mayweather fight 100%. The headbutt was silly and then he didnt seem to gutted when Mayweather caught him. Looked like he was fairly happy to get the pay day for 4 rounds of work more than livid that a major opportunity had been let slip through his own stupidity.

Cotto was seriously damaged - he was bleading from everywhere the ear, eye by the cheat- Ortiz was never beaten that bad, he was just in a hard fight, Did cotto quit against clottey when things started going wrong when things went wrong with the cut.

I think Ortiz made the correct decision, few more rounds of maidana beating could have damaged himself and finished his career, he shot himself in the foot by his post fight interview, if I was in his position I would have done the same thing but Would have lied my arse off and make things up like I was getting a real bad headache that is why I decided to stop.

Arguably Ortiz was seriously drained making 140. His next fight was 147 and he was massive come fight night. How he made 140 is beyond me. He proved himself against Berto which was a gut check and he passed.

The only problem was the interview. He's not the brightest of chaps I'll give you that. But he's not a quitter or a 'coward'.

Did Cotto quit when he took a knee?

But he's not a quitter or a 'coward'.

there's a difference between berto and Maidana, berto might even be better but Maidana is more relentless, Berto was seemingly more willing to lay on the ropes and had poor powers of recovery, maidana kept coming and it was discouraging for Ortiz to see this unlike the berto fight, I think Ortiz was more of a mature fighter in Berto fight and Maidana fight helped him, he had been there before berto had not - I infact Picked Ortiz and put £15 on him - got like 37 back, predicted berto to go down twice and lose on points, I was right (although I think he really went down 3 times) it was mature perfomance by ortiz, he didn't move straight back he moved side to side when he was hurt, against maidana he kept going straight back and maidana couldn't miss with his right hand and look at the damage he did to ortiz in few rounds, berto couldn't do that in 12

By virtue of the fact that Berto got up when decked and fought back, his powers of recovery seemed ok.

That's why Saul v Ortiz is a good fight. Both their styles gel. Ortiz will take Saul to places he's never been before and Saul will apply the pressure. Ortiz will withstand the pressure and fire back for a win inside 10.

Or he'll capitulate in 5 and smiles through the post fight interview and conference.

Is this a step up from the Williams bout that you vehemently condemned Az? If so just wondered what Ortiz has ever done at light-middle? To be fair I love this match up too, you're right, it's a great meshing of styles.

Also I don't believe Ortiz's performances at light welter were indicative of somone who is weight drained. Rather, he seems as though he's one of the few who are genetically adapted to the de/re-hydration cycle. However, comfortably gaining weight for fight night is different to adjusting to being punched by a light-middleweight when you are predominantly accustomed to being punched by light-welterweights.

Yes it is. This kid is live. OK, so he lost to Floyd. Who wouldn't. No shame. The manner of the loss will give him all the excuses he wants as boxers lie more than a cheating spouse. The weight is irrelevant as Ortiz is huge. He'll come in at SMW limit come fight night.

Arum is trying to set up the Williams/Pac fight now.

It doesn't matter if you put on the weight come fight night. The act of cutting weight weakens the person.
