I was dubious to put Argentina as this clown Kirchner is really annoying me at the moment but I will not mix politics with rugby.
Flower of Scotland is one of the few anthems that the Welsh supporter sing to aswell, the only others I can think of that we also sing are:
Ireland (both anthems)
France
& Italy

1) France
2) Russia
3) Ireland....
And just for the record...if i was allowed to choose my own...God save the queen would be bottom as the most dull, boring and uninspiring anthem imagineable......

Which Ireland Anthem are we talking about? The actual national anthem or the rugby song?
Ireland’s call (the rugby song) is pretty much a massive pile of donkey d(one)ck. Amhrán na bhFiann is awesome though.

I'm suprised anyone who isn't English picked God save the Queen. Not because its the 'English' anthem, just because its so dull.
I can't even remember how New Zealand's anthem goes, isn;t everyone just waiting for the Hakka show ?

How come the French are the only supporters who sing their anthem at random stages during the match?
I don't see that anywhere else.

Love the Welsh national anthem, I also like the Star Spangled banner and the Russian National anthem, I voted that way.
I also really like Ireland's call.

France, Italy and Ireland (both bits) are my faves I think. Not sure what order though.
I do really like Flower of Scotland too, especially at Murrayfield when they do the accapella bit. And there's something about the Russian anthem that makes me want to put on a big grey coat and furry hat and stand with hand on chest.

I cannot believe so many have voted for the dirge that is Flower of Scotland - a tune even more depressing than GSTQ - yet so few have voted for Land of my fathers.
Wales
Russia
Italy (France would get it if it was a quick Marseillaise)

GSTQ gets an unwarranted bad press IMO (and is my favourite, so there). National anthems aren’t meant to be chart-toppers or foot-tappers. GSTQ can be sung by all because it is short with simple, easily remembered lyrics which concentrate on the current and well-respected monarch (well the verse we actually sing does anyway). It starts with a formal easily-remembered melody which rises to a resounding emphatic ‘chorus’. All the ingredients of a good anthem – short rousing and simple. Its only flaw is shown up when sung for the 6N since it refers to the British monarchy rather than being specifically and solely English (mind you that does help to annoy some of the opposition)
It’s just a shame we can’t sing the 6th verse when we play the Scots.

I think there are less votes for the Welsh national anthem due to the amount of Welsh on here. Also I really like Flower Of Scotland, when my sister got married she was living in Scotland (Married in Wales though) we all ended up singing Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, Sosban Fach, Flower of Scotland, Ireland's Call and (not all of us) God Save The Queen. And IMO Flower Of Scotland sounded far better.

The other problem is that being English does not mean you are a Monachist, and if your are not a Monachist then all the meaning is gone.

The thing is god save the queen doesn't really work for me.
I'm not a fan of the queen nor do I beleive in god..... to have it not just as the national Anthem of England but the whole of the UK is a bit of a joke IMO.
Rule Britania would be a better shout than GSTQ.

I think Australia has a legitimate claim to world's worst anthem. I'd rather be singing the old VB ad (you can get it milking a cow...) than some rubbish about being girt by sea. Truly un-rousing stuff.GeordieFalcon wrote:Scotlands is second only to ours as the worst!

It can be sung by all... if you don't mind pledging all loyalty and success to an elderly woman who's done nothing for you and whose family pinches some of your hard-earned cash to go to the Caribbean every now and then.
Personally I've always thought the best thing about GSTQ is its length, at least we don't have to endure it for long. I cannot imagine how it could possibly stir up any passion whatsoever for the big games. It doesn't contain any element of pride, courage or self-belief, if anything it's more a song of submission than anything else. That is my harshly blunt opinion of it, I can assure all that I'm not trying to WUM.
I put down the SA anthem, Flower Of Scotland and Ireland's Call. Speaking of which, why do many Irish posters seem to dislike that one? At least most I've come across seem to, I don't want to generalise of course.

Re: Top 3 favourite anthems (not including your own)
Italy, Argentina and Wales for me. Love the Italian one the way the tune changes half way through and then reaches a crescendo, ditto the Argie ditty. The chorus bit of Land of our Fathers always sends a shiver up my spine.
NZ might have the best team in the world, but god their anthem is a dirge and like some of the tedious hymns the Jesuits used to make us sing in school. The Aussie one sounds like it was composed in a competition for six-year-olds. The SA one isn't bad (how many languages are there in it?)
GSTQ at least has the virtue of being short but apart from that it's like a funeral march - may they should try out the pistol's version. Sorry don't get the enthusiasm for Flower of Scotland and certainly can't get the enthusiasm for the hideous Ireland's Call ditty that we have inflicted on the rugby world.
Don't like all that pious breast-beating that goes with the Star Spangled Banner either - god the yanks take the flag patriotism thing to extremes

Most Irish people I have met dislike Ireland's call. My girlfriend's cousin called it ' a feckin' Eurovision entry'
I can see why a 2nd song was needed though, pitty it is gash
The lyrics to the French and Italian national anthems are awesome. I tried to learn the Italian ones to wind up an English housemate during a Six Nations but failed and so I just bought an azurri t shirt
Italian Brothers,
Italy has awakened,
She has wreathed her head
With the helmet of Scipio.
Where is Victory?
She bows her head to you,
You, whom God created
As the slave of Rome.
Let us band together,
We are ready to die

I had the indignity of watching a mere smidgen of the Queen's jubilee concert and apart from being amused by Gary Barlow's manhandling of the Queen as she came on to the stage, I found it hilarious with all these celebs on stage with madge singing GSTQ with utter gusto, then as soon as the second verse begun....everyone started dropping out. Classic!
It's only short because no one can be bothered learning the whole song...the hallmark of a dire tune if ever there was

GSTQ
Verse 1 – the Queen’s great
Verse 2 – we’re gonna kick arse
Verse 3 – something about shopping (drops off a bit here)
Verse 4 – hugs & kisses all round
Verse 5 – good attack starts with good defence
Verse 6 – pesky Scots (just to be inclusive)
Perfect.

Spain (the lyrics are really easy to remember)
France aux armes citoyens, formez vos bataillons, marchons marchons, quún sang impur and then I always forget the last line but it doesn't matter as everyone is so pumped you can get away with mumbling the last line.
Scotland - very specific. Don't care who we beat really just so long as we beat the English. You have to respect that kind of tunnel vision.

I'd agree a little if the title at least made a reference to a nation called England and verses 2 to 5 (can't agree with 6) were known globally or even domestically as important parts of the anthem. The first verse is the only one generally used. The content is not about standing united, fighting for each other or anything of the sort, it's about undying servitude to an individual. One person takes priority over the rest of the nation, that's the message delivered to the world when England sings its anthem. And people talk about modern day democracies, separation of church and state etc. Shows how naive some are I suppose.

I usually sing God save 'your Queen' to my friends.
Whilst not necessasarily factually correct it winds them up. And isn't that what really matters ?

Sospan fach is an old folksong for kids
God save the Queen is apparently the Uk's national anthem
Do you see the subtle difference ?

I chose the three I like to sing along to. Ireland, Scotland and some of the French, I do not know what the Irish people's problem with Ireland's call is though, I think it is really stirring and patriotic, I once hered aversion of it with the snare drums in the background, it was very uplifting.

Could be worse. They could have Jedward write their own idea of a unifying patriotic anthem and then perform it live before games
