The Barbarians are a an invitational club http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbarian_F.C.#History which as a long and proud history of turning up and playing top sides.

So there is now a rash of wannabe barbarian outfits globally .

To me, if I closed my eyes and drew a mental picture of the Baa-Baa it'd conjure up an image of black-and-white hooped shirts and club socks.

Why don't all the Barbarian variants play in hoops?

French Barbarians in blue and white hoops.
SH Barbarians in gold and black hoops.
and so on.

SA recently traded on the Barbarians' name against the English dirt-trackers but didn't feel the necessity to wear hoops either.

No idea.

The NZ Barbarians were founded in 1937, I'm guessing there was a good reason for them adopting red shirt and white shorts at the time. Selecting a white leaping lamb covered in blood as their emblem at the same time is a tad gruesome, though it's at least a colour match.

The French Barbarians (est 1980) play in Sky, Navy and Royal hooped jerseys, while the SA Baabaas (est 1960) are supposed to play in light and dark blue quarters.

I googled it as well Kiwi (since posting the article). There's not a lot of material to go on. I'm surprised that the NH BaaBaas are pre-war.

The French do play in hoops and the Saffas have a quartered shirt and have a longer history that I had imagined.

I wonder if the various Barbarian sides are affiliated?

Anyhow, I'm disappointed that they don't all play in hooped shirts.
