Rogers Cup Thread
First topic message reminder :
There doesn't seem to be a Rogers Cup thread up so I thought I'd stick one up. I suppose the biggest question is "How will the Djokovic, Murray and Del Potro do after competing in the Olympics on Sunday?"
Looking at the draw ( http://www.rogerscup.com/men/english/singlesDraw.php ) Tomic could play Djokovic 2nd round, Del Potro v Stepanek/Dolgopolov 2nd round and Murray v Raonic 3rd round possibly.

I managed to catch the Fish and Dologopolov matches. Fish looked real sharp and well Dolgopolov was shocking to say the least.

LK.. Dolgo's medical condition is very sad. He has something called Gilbert's Syndrome. Very tough to travel and play and be consistent.

Re: Rogers Cup Thread
Ah yes the blood disorder. It is sad to read that an athlete has such a rare condition. However it is inspiring that he is even where he is in the game.
Yesterday however it was a rather mixed bag. Some shots were stunning and others were just park standard. If I was to assess his game overall, I just think he ebbs and flows and I am not sure how much physical strengthening would improve his game as it can take away from the variety he has, for example like Murray who has sacrificed part of his variety to accomodate the fitness that consistency requires. I think if Dolgopolov can improve his concentration he might well fair better on the courts.

Agree LK. He is such a joy to watch when he is on. Hopefully there is better control of his condition in the next few years before he hangs up his racquet.
The AO run, and he almost had Murray after Soderling and Tsonga.

Re: Rogers Cup Thread
I enjoyed his FO 2011 encounter with Djokovic. If he could play that everytime I feel he could be a top 10er for sure. I do think he has a following as people relate to 'I don't know what shot he is going to play and I don't think he does' aura and it has an innocence about it like the young and bold always trying something different.
I didn't like the fact that Fleming and Buckland were quite scathing in terms of thinking that some of his play and mindset were 'unprofessional'
They need to ask how much of his condition affects the limitations in his game and what boundaries it poses.

Re: Rogers Cup Thread
And Steps beats JMDP. He played really well and Del Potro never really had any chances to break. I can only think of 1 BP in the 2nd set which was saved with an ace (I think). Del Potro didn't play poorly though.

JMDP appeared very tired, which is not an excuse, though.
DelPo converted 1/1 BP in set 1. Second set was 2/5.

Funny - Tipsy's and Turbot's winning scores today were exactly the same 7-6(2) 6-4.
Turbot on form is a tricky customer.
Cilic and Granola also won today.
Novak and Murray coming up later...

Tsonga playing absolutely dreadful. He looks like he doesn't want to be out there. Chardy playing a very good match indeed.

I haven't seen Chardy in years and was shocked to learn he's only 25. He's like Cilic: Been around forever.

If the DelPo and Tsonga matches are any indication, the Olympic exertions are taking their toll.

Re: Rogers Cup Thread
That's why they aren't Top 4 players I'm joking of course, I think they've had very tricky draws. Stepanek knew Del Potro was beatable, went out and beat him. Tsonga is just woeful at the moment, I cant explain this one.

Re: Rogers Cup Thread
I am really worried about Tomic tonight as a Djoko fan. His flat and slice balls really are a tough match for Novak who is a better high ball hitter. Now that the big guys are struggling hope it isn't contagious.

Re: Rogers Cup Thread
Djokovic should be alright. It might not be a pretty match to watch but he should do it as Tomic isn't in the best form at the moment. Plus, if I had to put any money on a player flying in the day before and putting on a good performance I'd say Djokovic. The man is bionic.

Re: Rogers Cup Thread
Berrer did create BP opportunities and did quite a bit of net rushing. Djokovic is much more savvy, SoCal. Unless Djokovic is really tired from his Olympic exertions and the travel, it may be a close but straight sets victory.
I would like to see the first set and see how Djokovic plays before I get apprehensive.

Do you think Djokovic and Murray are getting a bit apprehensive seeing all their fellow Olympians drop out?
Saying that, Benneteau is doing well.

Cant believe Chardy beat Tsonga...wow.
Its an odd event this one...feels very open and that not all the players are fully corpus mentus. Suspect alot of post Wimb/OG tiredness...

Re: Rogers Cup Thread
Why on earth is Cipolla trying to slug it out with Murray on the baseline with a slice?? Just not going to get the job done.

Re: Rogers Cup Thread
You get the feeling this could be an easy match for Murray if he could cut out the little errors here and there.

Re: Rogers Cup Thread
Mid-match thoughts:
Murray playing well enough. Cipolla is trying to slice his way to victory which isn't working well. If Murray can wrap this up within the hour he will be delighted. Preferably before any rain too.

Re: Rogers Cup Thread
Just tweaked his knee. I think he'll be ok, it's probably sore from travelling. At worst it's a sprain. He's getting the trainer to massage the top of his knee and he's smiling as it's happening so he doesn't look to be in much pain.

He breaks Cipolla again to take the 2nd set 6-3. Nothing spectacular from Murray, he did enough to win.

Re: Rogers Cup Thread
And he gets presented with a big chocolate cake. "Congratulations On Winning Gold".
Andy on knee: Not a major concern, just happens with changing surfaces. Joints a bit sore but not a major concern. Normal.
On Playing Toronto: Hard decision. Good facilities and such but I haven't slept much since Sunday and have been tired.
On Lendl: He was happy with the way I played in semi and final in particular. With Lendl last week doesn't matter, it's all about this week and the future. I want to enjoy last week but I need to focus on this week and the USO.

Re: Rogers Cup Thread
Very good from Murray in the circumstances. Played aggressively and looked relaxed.
However, he also looked absolutely knackered in his post match interview and confessed that he has hardly slept since winning the Olympics. Therefore I think he might struggle against Raonic tomorrow.
In fact, I think Raonic may knock him out. Won't be a disaster if it is the case. All that matters is that he arrives in new york in good shape in with this confidence still coursing through him.
