Olympics Day 12
It's official - London is better than Beijing. 22 golds at this point, and it means during the Absolute Breakfast Show next Monday, the unofficial anthem of the Games, that being Gold by Spandau Ballet, will be played at least 22 times. The more golds we get, the more Gold we hear.
What will Day 12 bring?

Tomorrow could be a quiet day.
Nick Skelton goes for gold in the individual Show Jumping, but that aside I can't see where medals will come from.

If I'm honest I can only see golds coming from Reade in the BMX and maybe a boxing gold. I fear we may have peaked

Re: Olympics Day 12
Couple more chances in the 470 sailing. We've got five boxers into the semis. Tae-Kwon Do could put up some chances - as could the Canoe Sprint.
We've got both hockey teams into the semis (although golds are fairly unlikely), Mo Farah in the 5000, Dobriskey looks awesome but will have a really tough job. Proctor in the long jump looked really good today, even Steve Lewis in the Pole Vault is in great form. Individual dressage is looking like a real possibility, Skelton in the individual jumping is in the lead.
Keri Anne Payne in the open water swimming has a good shot, as does Shanaze Reade in the BMX. Of course Tom Daley at Saturday could pull a miracle out of the bag and beat the Chinese.
(That's not tomorrow, that's my overall opinion of where our gold, and in some cases just medal hopes lie.)

The 2 canoeing events where we had chances this morning have both failed to yield medals. But Mo Farah is in the 5000m final after finishing 3rd in the heats.

Your comment reminds me of the initial feelings many had at the beginning of the games when we looked as though we might not get anyware near the Beijing total.
I have a lot more optimism and djlovesyou has done a good job summarising remaining hopes. I think we could still get another 3 - 6. So the debate could move on to whether we can get 30+ by the time the Games close.

I'd be happy to reach 25 golds now. I think 30+ is far too much tbh

Re: Olympics Day 12
Let's face it we'd have taken 22 at the start of the games. I expect there'll be a few more. 25 has a nice ring to it.
Have we got 3rd sewn up? Its looking like it to me but not sure if other countries can go on a charge in events that don't get much coverage e.g. canoeing/kayaking, wrestling

Our Decathalon athlete has pulled out after injuring himself in the second event (long jump)...real shame has he got a personal best in the 100m and won his heat.
Nicola Adams is into the final of the boxing! Guaranteed silver at least.

In that overly optimistic BBC article in which I linked to in another thread, GB to 95 Medals, it suggested 27 Golds. That number, 27, was seen to be insanely optimistic and yet here we are, only 5 Golds from that number.

As uncomfortable as I am with women's boxing I'll take the medal. My hypocrisy is killing me this games. I can't stand equestrian but here I am revelling in our 22 golds of which they've contributed 2!

But it is confirmed silver at least by the 470 girls and boys.
Lads will go head to head vs Aussies tomorrow, girls head to head vs kiwis on Friday

Re: Olympics Day 12
Does anyone know what defines a BMX bike?
As a kid I used to have to compete with my friends using a Raleigh Grifter. Would I be permitted to use that in the Olympics? It was good for an event we called "Crazy Corner" which involved knocking each other off with last man standing being the winner but hopeless going over jumps as it weighed about the same as an baby elephant.
How about someone giving it a bash on a Chopper?

I think your Grifter is a big no Hibbz. Its got gears hasn't it - BMX's don't have gears.
With its gears though it would have been ideal for shifts up Boxhill as domestique to Cav in the Road Race. Maybe worth applying for that role in Rio 2016?

Its still women hitting each other so I reckon I would be. I'm not against it, these girls will have worked hard and could no doubt beat the $h1te out of me, just don't like watching it.

All the medals that the GB team have won yet Ireland have not won a single medal yet. Why do we suck so much? I thought we were a sporting nation. I think maybe the Irish team should stay at home for the next Olympics. To quote Homer Simpson "If at first you don't succeed, give up. No point in making a fool out of yourself".

Well yes it had gears but required both hands to move the lever if I recall. A manoeuvre so risky that Tony Hawkes baulked at it.
These women look like teenage bullies who've stolen the smaller kids bikes as a prank.
I assume there is a size limit (bike not competitor)?

Re: Olympics Day 12
What's galling is when I was about 11 the BMX was replaced with a mountain bike as I was "too old for the BMX". I'd been riding that since age 6 so was well on the way to 10,000 hours needed to become world class on it (if you believe Matthew Syed).
Now I see people my age going for Olympic Gold and I can only really blame my parents for me not being in there competing.

Well at least you had a sniff at gold. Unless my parents thought "Crazy Corner" was destined for the Olympics they deprived me of even that.
Besides which you were clearly spoilt, I had to make do with my trusty steed until the age of 15 or so when I upgraded to a Rayleigh Milk Race.

Haha! You didn't see the mountain bike! It was my brother's rusty old hand-me-down. The pedals barely turned on it and the gears slipped all the time. I did more pushing than cycling

I checked the medal table and it said ZERO. I have not been watching much as I live in a time zone 6 hours ahead. It does sound a bit Irish that we can only get medals for fighting.

Re: Olympics Day 12
Interesting, the commentators have just said the current competitor has a longer bike because he's taller.
Maybe the idea of a taller one hasn't occurred to them.
Can you imagine if they just raised the seats? ha ha be like that sketch from Peter Kay with the occasional chairs!
I don't know how they are taking this seriously. Pure comedy to me.

A few tough women at these games .
Just saw a Kiwi hockey lass get a full whack on the side of the head from a Dutch opponent's stick (accident , I hasten to add) ...couple of minutes and she's up and walking off OK ...commentators speculating as to whether she'll be back on
Must have stirred the Kiwis up ...goal and they're up 2-1
