The first M is for their father, Forrest Mars Sr.
The second M is for Bruce Murrie, son of William Murrie, CEO of Hershey for decades.
Forrest had been kicked out of Mars by his dad, and set up in the UK, creating the Mars bar. He went back to the US, set up M&M's with Murrie, then kicked Murrie out and eventually took over the original Mars Ltd as well.

I did know the exact dimensions at one time... I'm an urban design nutter/architect so can tell you the heights of tall buildings... but had forgotten the exact numbers. I know it was based on some proportional system or optimal area for city blocks at the time it was laid out.
just checked it out again... 20 blocks per mile north of 14th St. The 250 feet was a guess - knew it was something near that from memory.
