Kingsholm Virtual Inn- come on in.
First topic message reminder :
Gloucester fans need somewhere to chat over a (an imagined) pint of Rucking Mole or Doombar.
Come on in fellas and ladies, take a seat.
Away fans welcome too.
What's happening then at GRFC & Kingsholm ?
Gossip, scuttlebutt, salacious rumour, even rubgy news - share it here.
Lord Leveson has not discovered 606, so you may speak easy here.
Seasonal mince pies & cognac available in nearby Gtown.
Merry Christmas to all our visitors.

Yeah I think the knee will give mean he gets a nice rest for a few weeks. Yellow was probably deserved as well.
To be fair the french guy should have got a talking to for the off the ball stuff but the refs didn't see it.

I'm not getting this, the French team's hooker got a yellow for throwing punches, but Hazel got a red. What's the difference? The fact that Hazel's connected? The intent was still there from the Mont-de-Marsan hooker.

I think it was the combination of the guy being on the floor and the knee when the french guy looked quite out of it.

Didn't see the French hookers punch but it only ever matters if they connect.

I've never got that though, just because you punch like a girl doesn't mean you didn't intend to hurt the opposition.

Not having seen it, I can only suspect he is looking at a long ban

Tiger - Mont de Marsan player tugged Hazell back off the ball. The MdM players momentum then caused him to stumble to the ground and Hazell was on the MdM players back. Once the MdM player hit the ground Hazell popped in a few punches (not all of which connected), he then added a knee to the Mdm players head. Lord only knows what Hazell was thinking

It looked like the MdM player got a punch in to the head when going down.

That is what I thought set him off too. It was stupid all the same.

Not Mr Hennessy's biggest fan (Glamorgan Wanderers v Cardiff Saracens - Ninian Stuart Cup Final, which we won !!!), but thought he handled the incident well. "Anything that has gone on before, that we've not seen. will be addressed, all I can go on is what I've seen and my AR's have told me"

Penfro, I thought the ref did really well. he was very clear with his AR's and clarified with them in order to make sure there was no misunderstanding. he also conveyed to Tindall very clearly what was happening and what will happen going forwards.

Not seen the incident, but it sounds undefensible. But ND has also alleged he was gouged.
On a positive note another Glaws win in a game we'd have probably lost last year.

Re: Kingsholm Virtual Inn- come on in.
From what I saw of the incident, it looked as if Hazell got taken off the ball, and as they went down may have got a boot in the face, which perhaps he felt was deliberate and reacted.
It was a niggly old game to be fair, and it wouldn't surprise me to find that there was some untoward stuff going on. I suspect that ERC will be looking at it closely in the next 48 hours.

It's a long time since I've seen a pro player see red like Hazell did. The punches were bad enough but the knee was extraordinary. So out of character, but I think he'll have a long time out to reflect on those few seconds. Most of us who have played are probably thinking that something must have happened earlier to provoke such a reaction, but that might never become apparent.

Quote from Nigel Davies on the BBC website
"We will take our punishment, but I think they need to take their punishment too.
"The doctor's had a look at Andy's eye. It was severely sore and very red.
"And we took some pictures of that, because that was damning evidence in its own right.

Thanks Pete. I am shocked by that. Regardless of any mitigating circumstances, there is no place in the game for that. Hazell may be a Glaws legend, but he deserves a very long ban for that.

Davies did come straight out after the match and claim gouging. And also if you listen straight after the incident you can hear Tindall(?) claiming that somethning happened as well.
Doesn't defend Hazell's actions though, but must be looked into.
The French league seems to be going backwards discipline wise and we don't need them bringing that in to the European arena too.

Awful pitch + awful weather = awful game of rugby. I'm amazed Gloucester didn't react to the French desire for a scrap at every opportunity, until the 2nd half.
Hazell's reaction was inexcusable though. You got the impression the French bloke knew he did wrong, as he just curled up and waited for blows. Ugly scenes though.
Again. it's a game Glaws won without playing well. It's alright but the not playing well bit will come back to bite us on the arse soon. We need to put games to bed and get ironing out these silly errors.

I don't think anyone is disputing that it was reactionary, however the knee pushes it above what is a reasonable reaction I would say. I think Hazell will get a fair old ban, and I would hope that if anyone is seen to have gouged, that they receive a considerably longer one.

So the repeated punches to the head prior to the knee was reasonable ten?

Re: Kingsholm Virtual Inn- come on in.
What I saw leading up to the Hazell incident:
Mont de Marsan forward seemed to hold Hazell off the ball, then they tumbled, French forward landed 'heavily' onto Hazell, who reacted.
In fact over reacted, several punches to the head with the (prop ?) prone, and coup de grace - the knee for good measure, probably the guy was out cold already; all this right in front of the ref.
Look I'm a Glaws and a Hazell fan, but we have to take personal responsibility here for our own actions. No excuses about provocation, a red card definitely and a lengthy ban probably. It damages the player and the club. He realised this too looking at his face as he trudged off. So no winners here from this one Mr Hazell.
PS: Glaws won, but were mostly awful. Esp in FH, in midfield cohesion (half backs & centres,) until the replacements came on to slight improvement. Lineout remains a problem too. Oh dear.

Whilst I wouldn't condone punching another player and it deserves the sanction that it would get, if a player has been gouged then I would say that it is an understandable reaction to lash out and punch the person who has gouged.
My own thoughts on the incident would mirror how gregortree describes it above. Hazell's comment in the link provided by Penfro is interesting in that he says it was the third time somebody had deliberately tried to injure him. It did look to me as if as they went down the MdM players boot may have caught Hazell's face, but whether that was deliberate or not is anybodies guess.
For me Hazell is not a dirty or nasty player but just had the red mist momentarily. It is a shame, but I think can expect a reasonable length ban here.

On a brighter note Twelvetrees looked very good when he came on, seemed a far better player then most of the others around him.
It's amazing what a good run of games in the right environment can do when you compare his form now to what he showed at Tigers.

Re: Kingsholm Virtual Inn- come on in.
I've watched the game in full now. Firstly I thought considering there was only 1 person starting who'd started against Bath we didn't look too disjointed. Had it not been for the conditions we probably would've notched up a few more scores.
I thought the front row of Thomas, Britton and Knight were outstanding and really gives us hope for the future. I feel Knight has to be given a run of starts now ahead of Harden.
The stand out performer was K. He is just a wrecking machine and it gives our game such an edge to know we've got a player that will get us over the gain line.
I've been calling for Molenaar to start for a while now and unfortunately when he did he had a pretty poor game. He wasn't helped by the conditions, but he made too many basic errors.
When 36 came on I thought he did brilliantly. Those kicks he put in were excellent and exactly what the team needed. He really does seem to have found his feet now, but I do hope he is rested against Bordeaux as he's been involved in every game so far.
Finally, on the whole Hazell incident. With the benefit of hindsight and taking the alleged gouging into account you can understand why Hazell reacted. It does makew his reaction right and he needs to be severly punished for his actions, as there is no place in the sport for kneeing. But if he has bee gouged, which his scratched retina would suggest, then they need to find the culprits and give them a very, very long ban.

Thursday - more 'revolting' French to deal with, this time Bordeaux at Kingsholm. I feel fairly confident about this match. We'll see if this lot try to 'provoke' the Glaws pack, but I think Nigel will have reminded the squad of the importance of keeping 15 men on the field.
