That save by Pepe could be key, thought Shelvey scored there but i think that was poor work by the camera man

Great game, Liverpool played well. But i feel sorry for Rodgers, unlucky exit for Liverpool, but good advert for the Europa League

I feel sorry for Carra , if this is indeed to be his last European game he doesn't deserve to go out making that mistake for Hulks goal

That's what makes european nights great at Anfield, the crowd where the best they've been all season. Such a shame that Carragher makes the mistake that puts us out in the end, but the players should take confidence from that as it took a hell of a lot to come that close.

Should have sent Agger forward last 5 mins and just pumped it in there box!
Why are you trying to pass it round at the back in the last 30 seconds!
Great effort, Suarez's 2nd free kick was insane

Re: Liverpool FC Thread: Numero Deux
While I think the players have to be commended for their performance I can't help but feel a little disappointed for two reasons:
1. Why didn't we play that way before conceding the goal, I think it's great that it galvanised the player, but we score first we have the momentum. We had nothing to lose either way.
2. We had half an hour to get the goal to put us through, with momentum on our side. I felt Rodger's changes disrupted the motion of the game, especially Shelvey who did not look ready for the occasion and Assaidi who hasn't played for months. I'm hoping the assault case isn't stopping him using Sterling.
Well done for the 3-1 win but unlike European seasons of the past it's a case of the could-have-beens, rather than those magical moments.

the double substitution straight after the goal was mind blowing , i cant believe he went ahead with it . Surely common sense says that changing things then was going to alter our momentum ?

Re: Liverpool FC Thread: Numero Deux
I still get the feeling that maybe Rodgers is better set out to be a coach rather than a manager, he seems to struggle when it comes to big decisions. I'm willing to give him time to get better, but it still makes the original decision to hire him an odd one.

Re: Liverpool FC Thread: Numero Deux
Some of his substitutions are very oddly timed and the players he takes off and brings on really make me scratch my head .
But like you i will give him time , i do get the feeling he has a ' love ' if thats the right word for the club

That's the exact thing I don't buy, I think it's all part of his schtick as well as his "Revolution" and all part of the plan. I'm sure he loves it because a lot of people swallow it, particularly the press, but it's all just fluffer. He's well known for speaking a good game, but I don't think he's yet to prove it.
Remember Alex McLeish got Birmingham to a similar position in their first season promoted.

He does tend to make all the wrong decisions. A double sub at a time like that? Insanity.

If Shelvey had have stuck away that chance Rodgers would be labelled a genius this morning. It's fine details and all that. It's unfair to blame one person when 3 defensive errors over the 2 legs have cost us dearly as well as the upmteen missed chances Suarez missed in the first leg.

Re: Liverpool FC Thread: Numero Deux
I was impressed with the way we performed last night, and for once, the crowd made themselves heard. If Zenit hadn't have scored so early, I doubt we would've pushed on the way we did.
That away goal sort of liberated us, and we then had no fear.
Such a shame for Carra to end his 150, and last European game that way.
I also don't blame Rodgers for them subs. He brought on two attack minded players when we needed a goal, nothing wrong with that.

With regards to the subs , he obviously was going to make them at that time in the game .........but once we had scored i think he should of waited 5 - 10 minutes after the goal to do it ........that would of let us get our shape back first .

My issue is the fact that it was 2 at once, i think it should have been 1 followed by another 5-10 mins later. Just my opinion though.

I also think the choice of Assaidi over Sterling was an odd one considering he hadn't used Assaidi at all for months.

Re: Liverpool FC Thread: Numero Deux
Really should win the game, hopefully an attacking line up from Rodgers. I think the main headache in selection is whether to keep Henderson in the team who has played well enough to keep his spot or start Coutinho who is a new signing and needs game time to settle in.
I wonder whether Skrtel could come back as well.

I think he will start with Coutinho and bring Henderson on in the second have to tighten things up , hopefully we would be winning the game by then .
Skrtel in place of who Crimey ? ................ Agger or Carra ?

Either, it's not a matter of Skrtel coming back into the first team, rather just giving him a bit of football to ease his concerns. I think Carragher will probably play pretty much every game from now until the end of the season with it being his last so I'd rest Agger and start Skrtel with Carragher.

I was thinking
Reina
Johnson Skrtel Carragher Enrique
-----------Lucas---Gerrard
Downing------------------------Coutinho
------------------Suarez
-----------------Sturridge
I don't see why you're sure Allen will be picked considering he was dropped a while ago now and hasn't shown any reason why he should be put back into the side.

I am not confident of winning this game, it has draw written all over it. We often struggle at Wigan to kill the game off and I think it will be much the same on Saturday.

There's a chance Sturridge will be out, in which case I'd start Henderson and Coutinho with Suarez as the main forward.

ive not had enough of wigan, they continue to survive with the smallest budget in the league. i think its still a great story and still remember their heartbraking first game in the premiership against chelsea, mainly for crespo's wonder goal! i hope they survive again. they always seem to find a way. will see if they can do it again

Re: Liverpool FC Thread: Numero Deux
I like Wigan as well and do feel a little bit sad if we beat them because they're a nice little side who stick to a good philosophy of football and business. They survive on a small budget, buying cheap good foreign players and selling them for a big profit.
I think the fact that they stay up every year is all the proof you need to show they're good enough for the league because that is all that matters in the end. If they found a little consistency they could challenge for a top half finish.
