Oooohh the gap is closing on NZ now! If we can just force them to keep playing the likes of Romania etc for the next few years some one may catch them.

So if Oz win by +15 and NZ by only +1 could Oz go top? That would be tad curious.

Australia can overtake in NZ if they win and NZ loses. They need a win and a NZ loss.
South Africa can overtake Australia if they win and Australia loses.
Argentina could overtake South Africa if they win and SA loses.
No one will drop out of the top 4.

I think you forgot to click the button saying these are world cup matches when doing the calculations,I make it that Argentina get 3.16 for a 1-15 win and 4.74 for a 16+ win.

Ha, could be true. This page reckons if NZ win by a point and Aus by 16, they will be tied on 93.07 points.

That changes the potential rankings a bit. NZ could drop down to 3rd, Argentina could go as high as 2nd. The Boks and Wallabies could finish anywhere in the top 4.

That's mental, the RWC skews the rankings too much if NZ's dominance of the game over the last few years can be wiped out by losing to a team they beat just a few weeks ago.Not that the rankings mean that much except for WC seeding purposes but it's the principal of it.

As long as we're consistently beating those ranked below us (which is every side but three at present) we're happy

That certainly seems to chime with Gatland's approach to beating the big SH sides. I wonder how many wins he'll get in the next four years to add to his total (which stands at 2? 3?).Knowsit17 wrote:rodders wrote:Can't understand how Wales get such a high ranking when they never actually beat anyone decent....

Re: World Rugby Rankings
Good to see we're (England) still above those power houses Scotland and Japan! That's what really matters...
Two questions.
1. Wasn't the RWC seedings system changing for the next comp, wasn't it happening closer to the event?
2. What do the IRB use after points if teams are tied? ie why are France above England?

Who knows. They're effectively equal anyway. I'd expect a fair amount of movement in the 6 nations. England had an 80% winning record over the last 4 years of 6 nations.

We'll wait for South Africa to collect any worthwhile points there.
Six Nations should be used to practice a much more assertive and attacking continuing presence through all five games. Hard at it for five and if need be make mistakes and errors through it.... and if need be pay the consequences on the results or injuries. Our squad needs much toughening up.

The first 4 are put in pots and the next positions are all DRAWN
For this years tournament each pool was made up of the following rankings at the time, 1,8,11,15 17. 3,5,9,16,20. 2,7,12,14,18 and finally 4,6,10,13,19.
So if they were drawn in the same way, it would look something like
NZ, England, Fiji, Samoa
SA, Argentina, Scotland, USA
Aus, France, Italy, Georgia
Wales, Ireland, Japan, Tonga
Some very intriguing match ups there

The rest.. fights to the bitter end.
Pool of Death?

Re: World Rugby Rankings
My question (and puzzlement) is this:
Most of the other teams this world cup seem to be up and down like a hoor's knickers.
But yet, no matter who Scotland play and whether they win or not, they seem to stick at 9/10 all the time.
Are we caught up in some weird rankings vortex?

I assume that means you're good enough to beat teams below, giving few points, and lose to teams above you, losing few points.
In general terms any way.

But yet, no matter who Scotland play and whether they win or not, they seem to stick at 9/10 all the time.
Are we caught up in some weird rankings vortex?

Remember old Chinese proverb:
"Dark Horses can be seen on a clear day but come night-fall Dark Horses are nowhere to be seen" -
The World Rankings are always done during the evening after night fall .

Re: World Rugby Rankings
Is something wrong with the Rankings Computer..... ?
After one week where Wales drew against Ireland and France beat Italy with very little real conviction.... France move to 2nd and Wales slump to 10th??????
I know the figures always work because it's just the science of numbers but I really can't fathom why that result for France shoots them up so far or that result for Wales kicks them down so low.

The link in the OP opens with the women's rankings. Oz at 7 and SA at 12 is a clue!

for those who can't be bothered to click on the "Men's" tab
http://www.worldrugby.org/rankings#mru
England move up above France courtesy of their away win. Scotland drop a couple of places behind Japan and Fiji. Wales and Ireland don't move but presumably the gap has widened a bit.

Re: World Rugby Rankings
Keep reading how England's rise in the rankings will help them avoid another group of death. The Daily Mail has a piece to that effect today.
This is plain daft. The problem last time round was that Wales had had a bad run, despite being a top team, and so got assigned to a different tier. It wasn't England's lowly rank which put us on a collision course.
The only way another group of death will be avoided in principle is if all teams retain their relative positions between the seedings and the competition.
Even then, in practice, so long as there are more than eight competitive sides, then a group of death of some complexion will be inevitable. Since we have ten teams in the two major competitions, then at least two of those are always going to miss the quarter-finals.

Absolutely correct.
It's pointless fretting about ranking as it relates to a competition four years away. Yes, the ranking will dictate what sides face off against each other in pools at that time, but it will not dictate what strength most of these sides will have going into the competition. So, let's say England would quite like to have France in their Pool Stage and the rankings now make that a promising prospect. Perhaps by then, France will be back to a peak and playing the best rugby in Europe at the time. What use will present ranking be then when the pool battles must be fought? It'll be a Pool of Death if three or more sides have real prospects of progressing. That will be decided well after the Pools have been decided upon.

Re: World Rugby Rankings
What these rankings do suggest though is that England maybe arent as good as we think from them winning their last 7 games. The Northern Hemisphere sides is weak the board at the minute. Even an overweighted flump at the world cup has England comfortably above the dross, without having to beat any quality sides recently.
Australia is the real test of where they are at compared to 2014 and 2010, the sides that went on to grow from promising performances againt SH opposition into abject failures.
