How did you arrive at that erroneous conclusion when SA lost more ranking points than Australia ?

When I typed it, England had just beaten and Australia and the Ireland South Africa game hadn't started. The points exchange meant Australia fell behind South Africa, but remained ahead of England. Obviously things changed when the boks were beaten.

Re: World Rugby Rankings
LOL. South Africa were Number 2 for about six hours.
I think Ireland will finish the series in 4th - they're better than SA.
England / Aus will be 2nd and 3rd. Still too tight to guess who will win the next two.
Wales will remain on 82.49.
Are Argentina and France playing anyone?

The only ranking you need to know is NZ is number 1 and everyone else second. Not much difference between 2nd to 7th anyway.

Re: World Rugby Rankings
Well, we'll have to see how New Zealand go. They've got a lot of new players and haven't played any top teams since the world cup. How long were England No 1 for after the 2003 RWC, when some core players retired (or got old).
I see New Zealand is avoiding England this year, but the Bledisoe Cup should be interesting.

Well, that's the thing about New Zealand, they don't often need WC wins to be at or stay at the top. It's been a bit of a habit that they find difficult to break.

There seems to be 4 distinct groups developing in the top 11, would we bunch these teams together at current levels?
1 - NZ
2 - Aus, Eng, SA
3 - Arg, Wal, Ire
4. Fra, Sco, Fiji, Jap

I think it's too fluid at the moment. If Ireland beat SA, they either join them or go ahead. Given they won last week with 14 men, I think and Ireland win is quite likely.
Actually, this week, four of the five matches could see positional swaps, which is pretty amazing.
Points wise, NZ will stay at the top - but they can't get more points against Wales. As this is based on a points exchange system, New Zealand should give up international rugby now, and they'd remain at No 1 forever. I think south Africa tried the same in the 1980s.

Re: World Rugby Rankings
It's chaos at work and doing its thing - form rising and falling, central players leaving or being created and as Alex says, the fluidity it causes.
NH sides have a subtle bounce in fortunes - in places - and the attitude and confidence levels of believing in your coach helps a bunch too. But that 1, 2, 3, 4 list............. well they've been tried before to draw a line in the sand between different 'factions' or 'ability levels' and the one I remember from before the WC doesn't look anything like Pooly's

Ireland in 7th because they lost to France and England and drew to Wales in the 6 nations.
Beating SA in SA is impressive though.

Ireland were second less than a year ago. That's the point there is very little between 2nd and 7th. Ireland played England and France away from home both by very little in terms of score. I wouldn't be surprised if we beat them both at home next year.

A little because they are champions. However they did play Ireland and Wales at home which makes a difference between teams that are similar in quality.

Obviously things can change quickly but the rankings are normally a pretty good indication of where teams are at.
England, since the dire World Cup, have improved hugely. I'd fancy them to take Wales and Ireland home and away currently but things can change.

21-10 - a 11 point loss is not a small margin of defeat. It's a solid win.
Plus England have won the last 6 out of 7 vs Ireland.
Funnily enough Ireland have found it much easier to beat SA in recent years than England.
Ireland have won the last 5 out of 7 vs SA which is impressive.

Second in the world...
Yep the view is mighty fine from up here
Am I right in thinking we're the only 6Ns team to ever make 2nd or higher?

Re: World Rugby Rankings
Thanks. Interesting that England overtook Australia last weekend, but Australia can't overtake England this weekend. I assume that is because their is a slight bias to the away team in the points exchange.
Also interesting - Australia will overtake South Africa is they do as well as them.
And Ireland could move to third in the rankings, if they win by 15 or more, and Australia lose.

Re: World Rugby Rankings
So since the summer tours have began
England has gone up
Australia has gone down
South Africa has gone down and up?
Wales has gone down
Scotland has gone up
France has gone down.
And Ireland, busting their balls with 14 men for one game and no oxygen in the second, still haven't moved a f**king inch! There is no justice in this rankings system! Burn it at the stake!

Could be worse. NZ could whitewash Wales scoring 100 tries to nil over the series and not get one ranking point. Where's the justice?

Bit weird to see Argentina dropping to the 9th position. If they have a bad RC and AI they could be 3rd seed in the WC which is not good news for anyone!

Current world rankings
1. New Zealand 96.30
2. England 89.49
3. South Africa 85.08
4. Australia 84.23
5. Wales 82.49
6. Ireland 81.67
7. Argentina 81.44
8. France 80.75
9. Scotland 80.44
10. Fiji 75.49
Saturday 10/9/2016 New Zealand vs Argentina in Hamilton
If NZL win by 1-15 points 0.000 96.30 81.44 No

If Arg win by 1-15 points 2.000 94.30 83.44 No
If Arg win by more than 15 3.000 93.30 84.44 No
NZ are assured of the No.1 spot irrespective of the result.
Argentina cannot drop lower in the rankings due to the points differential. However a win would see them overtake Wales and rise to no 5. in the world. Even a draw would take them ahead of Ireland (No. 6) If they win and Australia lose they overtake them, and a big win would take them ahead of Australia if they draw, South Africa if they lose big.
Saturday 10/9/2016 Australia vs South Africa
If Aus win by 1-15 points 0.785 85.02 84.30 Yes

If SA win by 1-15 points 1.215 83.02 86.30 No
If SA win by more than 15 1.823 82.41 86.90 No
Australia will overtake South Africa (No. 3) should they win. A big loss would see them fall below Wales (No.5). Should Argentina win big, Australia need to win to stay ahead of them. If Argentina win, Australia still need a win to maintain the No. 4 spot.
South Africa cannot overtake England (No.2) and they cannot fall below Wales. They will trade places with Australia (No.4) if they lose. A big loss and a big win by Argentina would see them fall to No.5.

Re: World Rugby Rankings
Doesn't any win for Argentina see them move above Wales? 82.93>82.49. Also a draw would see them leapfrog Ireland. Finally a combination of a win for Argentina and a big win for Aus, or a big win for Argentina and any win for Aus would actually see Argentina overtake SA into fourth. Obviously any win at all for Argentina seems highly unlikely, but the pedant in me though it was worth pointing out

Re: World Rugby Rankings
I am not sure about SA but OZ look like a better team to me now then when England toured there. They are playing with more confidence and structure.
SA on the other hand look to be in a bit of a pickle - low on confidence. Perhaps with Lambie pulling a few strings they will get a few results. Certainly all home nations will have a good crack at them - depending on how strong their fielded teams will be.
