Cryotherapy chamber at the Vale by 6 Nations
Wales will have a cryotherapy chamber built at their training base outside Cardiff in time for next year's Six Nations. The project will run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Classic cinema Maes. Stallone, Snipes, Bullock.
Sounds a great idea until George North accidentally gets left in the freezer until 2032, whereupon he has to defrost and fight the English Federation to free the Welsh from a freedom fighter existence hidden in abandoned coal mines.

Cryotherapy use of extremely low temperatures to aid recovery when training.

Well I hope they don't spend too much time sitting in the icebox, like they did this year. Cryotherapy will be very handy to our fitness and conditioning but they have to actually train for the rugby too. All Blacks were recently training at some dump in Pontypridd, a building site and digger in the background. That's the harshness you need sometimes.

Does sound like a load of mumbo jumbo. The chamber salesman is laughing all the way to the Aston Martin showroom.
Although, this story has been around a while, the Mail Online ran it a couple of weeks back.

Maybe the WRU have come to their senses and are going to spend the money on some scrum machines instead.

Only read the first few lines.
The players have been using cryotherapy in their training camps in Poland and the recovery technique has helped them become one of the fittest teams in world rugby.
The part about it saying the recovery technique has helped them become one of the fittest teams in world rugby.
Hmmmmmmmmmm, they have not looked that fit in the first 2 game this autumn internationals. Well in my opinion any way.

It's the opposite ofe a sauna, here instead of sweating voluntarily, you freeze yourself voluntarily.Taylorman wrote:maestegmafia wrote:Wales will have a cryotherapy chamber built at their training base outside Cardiff in time for next year's Six Nations. I don't get why Wales Rugby Union didn't just go buy 30 deep freezers, it's cheaper, not too uncomfortable, and more privacy will be attained if each player has his own, off season he can use it for his meat as well.

If the WRU ever ventured outside the luxury of the Vale they would know they don't have to go to Poland.
Just go to Dowlais Top, this is the coldest place in the World.

The Mail article says they're still going to go to Poland for the privacy (or suggests they might still go, you never can tell with the media).
There was an 'expert' on the BBC when Wales started using it and he was saying it's only any use if you go in almost immediately. I think this one if for post game recovery, during competition training.
The 6-8 months after starting to use it did seem to make a big difference. It'll be interesting to see the longer term effects. The first two games so far is way too little to go on for that.
Also this isn't a magic bullet. It just allows the players to train more frequently in a day as it speeds the recovery from an earlier training session.

I tend to think more of George North frozen in Carbonate being displayed as trophy in Jabbas palace
Joking aside these things work by speeding your recovery, and therefor enabling you to do more of that hard work. No team will get rugby fit by doing endless harsh work till they drop then getting dragged up and told to do it again till they get injured...that approach to fitness got jettisoned in the 70s.
All they are doing is trying to maximise the time when they arent training, to enable to them to sepnd more time training effectively.
The extent to which they work may be debatable, but the general principle is sound.
Im sure there is cheaper way of doing it, especially buying one over winter...couldnt they just make them sit out on the training field in their pants?

Re: Cryotherapy chamber at the Vale by 6 Nations
I often question whether some teams aren't over trained.
It is fine pre season to get a team in full fitness, but once a tournament is on the way, skills trianing is probably more important than running the toffee out of players.

I think Wales should spend more time on the training pitch working on basic skills rather than waste money on this nonsense.
Our fitness can't be much different from other top teams but our skills seem like another planet compared to the likes of the SH sides at the moment.

I think some sides get carried away with new-fangled preparation methods and think that is what makes the difference when they are successful. Often at the detriment of proper skills.
Recent Welsh sides that have done well have been well-drilled, good in defence and consistent with the basics. This Welsh side struggles with all three. Freezing their nuts off won't improve this. Samoa (given their limited preparation time etc) weren't blown away by Welsh fitness levels so they need to look at other areas.
Waste of money in my opinion.

Agree with that, as soon as teams do something fancy like this they flop. SA and their freaky deaky boot camps, ABs and their fluffing about on the French coast, poms in queenstown, sir Clive and his best prepared lions team ever, etc. How about just keep it all on the DL as these odd things become lightening rods.
