Saints v Ulster Friday HEC 7th December
First topic message reminder :
So the big double header kicks off at Franklin's Gardens on Friday evening. Both teams will believe a win is possible but who will prevail?
Ulster coach Mark Anscombe says Ulster will need to improve on the current form. I would agree, though the disruption of Autumn Internationals wouldn't have helped.
http://www.ercrugby.com/eng/news/19701.php#.ULyVo-RWySo
Interesting interview with Pat Lam (Former Saints captain) who actually thinks these sides could face each other in the Final next May.
http://www.ercrugby.com/eng/matchdaytv?play=media&id=13581

Congratulations to Ulster (and to Connacht for that matter who I was keeping a slight eye on via the red button).
I had expected both of those teams to lose last evening, but both the Irish teams were convincing winners. Ulster just bullied the Saints off the park with the power and precision that Saints could not begin to match. Brilliant. That's 13/13 isn't it? Very impressive.
Maybe a Tigers date in Belfast in the spring?

Congrats Clive.
Watched the match when I got home from work but fell asleep when it was still 20-6. Apparently when I woke up I've decided to delere the recording without watching any more. Swear I wasn't drunk!
I take it the team really kicked on to get the bonus points win. What did Hartley do this time? And what were the last 2 tries like?
I thought in the 1st half Trimble was outstanding and Payne really does look a class apart from the rest. Chris Henry was everywhere and the scrum destroyed Northampton. Great performance all round and hopefully can kick on next week. It scares me a bit that henderson is a year younger than me too!

Many congrats Clive!
Just watched the tries again.
That final one was a thing of beauty alright. Need to watch with the sound off though. Barnes is doing my head in between saying we sacked our coach for losing the final (we didn't sack him and it was sorted long before the final) and then saying we had lost our last three HEC games to English teams. I'm pretty sure we just squeeked past the Tigers at Ravenhill last season, no?
That and the prematch head to head they showed about the 2 Captains, Hartley and Best!

I like Stuart Barnes actually.... and the handbags between Hartley and Best only added to the match .
In fact apart from Muller's injury I'd say all is right in the world right now...
Can't wait for the return game....that's if it's safe to come to Belfast that is...

Jared Payne has a class about him just makes everything look easy. The catch he took before his try in the 1st half was made to look ridiculously easy!

Re: Saints v Ulster Friday HEC 7th December
He was involved in every try there, he is just class.... but the interplay between that back 3 is just brilliant to watch. That cutting edge out wide is the biggest difference from last year I think.
When you watch the way Trimble, Payne and Bowe link up in attack it really makes it difficult to justify dropping one for Gilroy. It's a great place for us to be.
Great performances across the board last night... could name 9 or 10 MOTM contenders. Fantastic stuff.

Ye, I personally would have started Gilroy in place of Trimble but Jesus Trimble was like a man possessed last night. He'd run head 1st into an oncoming bus! And offered a lot in attack as well!
Maybe Tommy will be the man dropped for Gilroy eh Cari? Haha

True story Rava. I only saw bit of it but he looks like a good player, very strong for an irish 12 and I do believe he is quite young too. Offload out of contact for the try was pretty tasty, then again Paddy's tackling was outstanding and Luke Marshall destroyed his opposite number for Tuohy's try. NOw just need Darcy to run over ROugerie a few times

Most people are good after a few weeks from that kind of injury no? Would have thought 5/6 weeks more likely? Or is it maybe compounded by his earlier thumb injury?

Re: Saints v Ulster Friday HEC 7th December
Evening crew,
Only have a minute, but wanted to jump in and congratulate Ulster on the win. Your back three was clearly a step ahead of Saints and was the big difference in the match. Real class. I get the point about Jared Payne now, and it seemed he is almost another captain from the back. Which is important.
I think if you get the win in the return fixture, you are clearly one of the small group of teams to favoured to win the whole thing. And you would be the team I will be pulling for. There are no real unsavoury characters in your lineup, so a rather appealing side. Excepting Jared payne's scoring dance.
For Saints, I still am shocked at the selections in the starting lineup, especially the halfbacks. They were poor and seemed lost. Lamb's kicking was horrendous. He has kicked in worse winds in Northampton before. No excuse. I told you all I would feel a physical pain if I saw his name pencilled in. Still hurts.
The other point which was disappointing was the constant turnovers. Seemed Saints were trying to force things rather than stay with their natural forward oriented game. And that cost Saints big time. I have to wonder how much flak Jim Mallinder will receive.
