V2 Greatest of All Time Awards
Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages V2 proudly presents its inaugural greatest of all time awards, the competition pits 64 titans of sporting history against each other in a world cup style event. With Giants from the worlds of Golf, Boxing, Football, Cricket, track and field, tennis and many more this competition will prove who really is the greatest of all time!
Forget the Jules Rimet, the Ryder Cup, Wimbledon, the World Heavyweight Title or even Olympic Gold this is the one they all want and it’s up to you who takes the title. The competition starts with the group stages, 16 groups consisting of 4 competitors with the top two progressing from each round, the next stage goes straight into a knockout format pitting the final 32 in one on one contest, all the way to the final where V2’s G.O.A.T will be crowned.
The 64 competitors have been chosen by the admin and moderator team and will be drawn randomly into the 16 groups.
It’s really easy for you to get involved and have your say, simply vote for the sporting great that you believe deserves your vote in each group/round based on their achievements, medals, honours, skills, personality etc. etc. it’s all down to personal preference, however what we do ask is that you leave a comment as to why you voted and tell us exactly why your chosen participant deserves your vote and progress to the next round.
Voting for each poll starts in the morning and ends at midnight so you have one day to cast your vote before the next poll starts the following day.
The participants will be revealed each day when the group is posted up and the tournament will run between Mondays-Fridays.
There’s going to be lots of ways to get involved on the site and on twitter, we will be looking for posters to champion some of the participants come the later stages and promote their competitor to the rest of the site, so make your posts throughout the tournament interesting, opinionated and thought provoking and you may be asked to champion a finalist.
The competition will begin on Monday 7th January so make sure your online and ready to debate on who gets your vote and progresses on the road to become V2’s Greatest of All Time.

This is the kind of thing we should get different members to champion daily, either in writing or with a podcast/interview kind of format. Sounds exciting though, MtotheC is the master of competitions

What a cool idea.
Agree with Chris, we should have different members championing each athlete, perhaps via an article.
I'll champion Roger Federer.

Re: V2 Greatest of All Time Awards
This is a good idea.
Based on my experiences of chairing the Cricket Hall of Fame, these things tend to work best when people listen to all sides of the argument (or sufficient enough sides to make an informed judgement) before rushing into a vote. With more contributors and less time that will obviously be more difficult with this project. But I hope that it doesn't just become a case of 'I've never heard of him/ don't know much about him so won't vote for him'.
If I could make a suggestion, perhaps somebody from the relevant section could write a short essay supporting each candidate before they come up for scrutiny, which could then be published along with their names. The essay would outline not only the details of their career, but also make a case for why they should be put through to the next round.
Good luck with the project and I'll be sure to make contributions when I can

I will quite readily write a piece on who in my belief wins this competition hands down - The Don - Sir Donald Bradman.
Watch this space, it'll be with you in the next few days.

Re: V2 Greatest of All Time Awards
Fists, as each voter's choice and contribution is open to subjectivity (so taking in to account global impact, personality, long-lasting influence, ability to transcend etc if they wish) I wouldn't be so sure of the Don's impending victory! He'll be there or thereabouts, but the fact that each and every one of us has out own idea of what exactly constitutes 'greatness' means that this will be a very, very interesting exercise.
I'd love to have written for the Don, mind you, but I know you'll do a sterling job! I'll throw my hat in, if it's ok with everyone else - I'd be happy to make a case for any of the following (would be in trouble if any of them get paired up directly, mind you!): Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Michael Phelps, Roger Federer (although I think he's already taken?), Andrew Johns, Martina Navratilova, Stephen Hendry, Pelé and basically any of the track and field candidates. If we're doing this 'championing' thing, that is!
Really looking forward to this.

I should have mentioned Graf as one of the candidates who I'd happily write about, but she slipped my mind.
CF, feel free to offer a write up for anyone you like once the list and match ups are announced - this should be open to all v2 members, I think. No doubt we'll have multiple people wanting to write for one man / woman in many cases, but I don't think it'd hurt too much to have multiple cases put forward?

Will be interesting to see who got selected in the first place, I imagine there'll be as much contention with that as with the actual awards comp!

Apologies to CF (and the admins!) if I've given out some duff info there, then.

Can write about any other cricketers that might have been nominated, MtotheC. Also would be able to do something in support of any F1 drivers if nobody else is.
CF, I wouldn't think there would be a problem with you writing something for this. I can't speak for the admins and have nothing to do with the organisation of this, but I'd think we'd want as many people contributing to the debate as possible.

While you're at it, we have a team of the year currently short of two CBs, four MFs and two FWs.

Chris, I've no doubt the votes will be wide and varying, but I'll certainly do my best at putting the case of The Don forward.

They have to get past Alex Bogdanovic first .
And surely the cricketer in the final should be Jimmy Ormond, if only for his response to Mark Waugh's sledging

Re: V2 Greatest of All Time Awards
The 'championing' is open to all site contributors not just v2 writters, if you feel passionately about a sport or one of the personalities involved then your more than welcome to get involved.
The list of sports involved are:
Boxing
Rugby Union
Rugby League
Cricket
Tennis
Golf
Darts
American Football
Football (soccer)
Swimming
Motor Racing
Athletics
Cycling
Snooker
Baseball
Basketball
Ice Hockey
Rowing
If you want to put your name down for one of the above then comment on here and I'll inbox you with details. I know I'm being quite cloak and dagger but the tournament works a lot better with that element of surprise each day seeing who gets drawn against who.

Re: V2 Greatest of All Time Awards
I'd also like to say the selection process for the nominations is not an easy process whittling it down to 64 from across all sports, so if people want to put forward from their sports who they'd like to see involved then it could mean we amend the list prior to it commencing to avoid someone glaringly obvious missing out!

I'll be inboxing people details over the next couple of days so keep an eye out, I propose a participant if your happy with them then get writing ASAP and I'll be asking for your article before they compete so that it can be published with that days group.
