Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
First topic message reminder :
Australian Open 2013:
Information: The Australian Open is a major tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. First held in 1905, the tournament is chronologically the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the year – the other three being the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles and junior's championships; as well as wheelchair, legends and exhibition events. Since 1988 the tournament has been played on hard courts at Melbourne Park.
The Australian Open typically has very high attendance, second only to the US Open. It was also the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during wet weather or extreme heat with its two primary courts, Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena, equipped with retractable roofs.

Federer has looked un-troubled thus far. All omens pointing to a Federer/Murray showdown.

No BPs faced today, but Davy played very much unlike his match against, say Ferrer @Qatar or Gasquet.

Still 30 degrees in Melbourne and Kvitova is known to wilt in the heat...... Shame Laura wasn't playing Stosur as that's pretty much a walkover in Australia.

Davy has always been great at being consistently inconsistent. It is a shame. He should've beaten Gassy at Qatar.
With Tomic up next for Federer, you feel Tomic has to raise his level a few notches to compete with Feds. The fringe players in the draw are setting themselves up nicely for the big 3. Murray with Monfils or Simon beyond Berankis. Raonic and Kohly are looming in Feds section.

The serve costing her as usual. If she can fix that she'll be a phenomenal player.

well done Robson, poor start in her first service game but digs deep to break back straightaway, and then rescues a BP to hold with consecutive aces for 2-1.

Don't know what the UE stats were for Fed, pretty high I would think, and a player with greater belief than Davy might well have taken more advantage. Overall a solid performance but I suspect Tomic will test him a lot more.

Robson really hasn't settled yet, too many errors off the FH and Kvitova breaks for 3-2.

I don't see it. Bernie will have to play very well to get even a set against The Fed, purely because I imagine Roger will want nothing more than to chew him up and spit him out.

But that's my point really TSJ......I think Tomic IS playing well, and with added confidence after his Sydney win.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
Kvitova gets the benefit of what looked an ordinary line-call to me, but with Robson not stopping to challenge she forces her way back to deuce, and a poor poor FH from Robson gives her the double break for 5-2. Robson just not got into her stride at all yet, while Kvitova looks really sharp.

I hope he puts in a good performance, plays like he has been doing for the past couple of weeks and doesn't wilt under the pressure (but he doesn't strike me the "wilty" type).

to be fair Kvitova played the BPs pretty well there with some big serves, she looks vulnerable on serve though, but Robson hasn't had a comfortable hold yet, desperately needs to find some rhythm on serve.

Booooo!! Why couldn't she have drawn Errani at this stage? That would have been more enjoyable.

39 UEs for Davydenko, 42 for Federer. He needs to cut these down quite a bit. They are quite high for a 3-set match.

Kvitova steps it up when she needs to on the BPs. A more experienced player would have beaten her to a pulp by now.

meh, very poor play from Robson there, on the BPs she had chances but made errors, needs to get something going somehow.

Bernie!!! http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/video/index.html?tabName=highlights
Laura's getting opportunities but she's not taking them. I think that's where she's suffering from a combination of lack of experience and poor play.

She's playing someone who is exactly like her except is in better shape. That's the difference. Laura's defence will improve as she plays the better players.

Yes he will definitely have to cut the UE count if he is to make it to the business end.

Federer's footwork was much better against Davy as compared to Paire (...and I was transfixed by the colour of the shoe-laces ). Tomic is a good test for Federer, and one that I think Federer can negotiate with ease, despite Tomic's cockiness.

Right, this is the match here. If she holds, she's carrying a bit of momentum into the decider. If she doesn't hold, Kvitova will win this 7-5.

Come on lags. Nothing like a let's go chant.
The Brits I recall even chanted it during the Watson match
We need to devise a new and original one.

I guess we do!
Whatever happens here Laura can leave Melbourne with her head held high. I have money on her making Top Ten by the time she reaches 21.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
We could do the "There's only one Laura Robson"?
I think she will reach the top 10 before 21. That FH of her's is ridiculous. One I am sure Murray would love in spades.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
Her name was Laura
She was a ball girl
With Adidas merchandise in her hair
And her dress cut down to there.
She would break her opponents serve.
And then thrown in a double fault
And while she tried to be a star.
Heather always raised the bar.
She couldn't toss the ball.
But she still won 6 games to four
To the tune of Barry Manilow's "Copacabana"
