Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
First topic message reminder :
Australian Open 2013:
Information: The Australian Open is a major tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. First held in 1905, the tournament is chronologically the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the year – the other three being the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles and junior's championships; as well as wheelchair, legends and exhibition events. Since 1988 the tournament has been played on hard courts at Melbourne Park.
The Australian Open typically has very high attendance, second only to the US Open. It was also the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during wet weather or extreme heat with its two primary courts, Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena, equipped with retractable roofs.

I'm following the scores + radio. Aggie's a great player and has an enjoyable style. If Serena doesn't clear up this year, I reckon she's in for a good shout for a major.

Solid start from Heather Watson. On serve and she leads 2-1.

very positive start for Watson, holding twice for 2-1, some cagey rallies already but Watson is doing a good job at playing with good depth to not let Radwanska get on top so far.

Pretty good stuff so far. A bit cagey like MfC said, but you can see a bit of style out there already.

Great get from Baggy there!
ATP World Tour had a poll on facebook yesterday asking about likely upsets. Almagro was the most popular followed by Djokovic! Who on earth thought Djokovic was going to lose??

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
Court does seem faster this year, to me, although it depends on the player. E.g. Verdasco-GOffin was fast, but Murray made it look slow.
Ball does seem to cut forward a bit more on the bounce, and not hold up as much. Not a huge difference, but a step in the right direction.
Also the most serve-volley I've seen at the AO in recent years, or maybe at any slam. Mind you, the volleyers are not exactly dominating, but at least they're having a go.

And that's why I'm tipping Stefan Edberg to take the title.
(what d'ya mean he's retired.......? )

Hampton loses the first set on a DF to Vika.
She did come back from 5-1 to 5-4.
Now she is up a break on Vika.

3 consecutive breaks. Let us see if Hampton can hold here. 40-30. Points are being lost more than won. Deuce after an FH error. Ad Hampton, Come on hold. And she does. She reminds me quite a bit of Henin, but with a DHBH and SHBH.

If Hampton can reduce her UEs, she can beat Vika, LK.

It has been a long day LF. I was watching the first set of Hampton and Vika and it was enjoyable viewing. I am now on the laptop trying to locate some old coursework guff. Nothing exciting

Love Kader Nouni's deep voice, but Vika's shrieks are so anticlimactic.

Aye the shireking is unbearable. Watching Robson and Kvitova the other day was refreshing as it was quiet
It's crazy. I quit my studies halfway through because of illness and the. The bloody governing body of my profession decides to re-structure the qualification content and now I have to send them some coursework demonstrating competence and understanding despite the work I did as well as the practical experience I have bureaucracy at it's best.
Still tennis is a nice and timely distraction

If Hampton can hold it together she can. Has she racked up the DFs as I think she only made one in the first set.

Hampton has give up her break. I think Vika may just scrap through this one.

According to the Aussie comentator, del Potro played only a handful of matches in 210. I had no idea the Argentinian had been around that long.
