First topic message reminder :
Australian Open 2013:
Information: The Australian Open is a major tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. First held in 1905, the tournament is chronologically the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the year – the other three being the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles and junior's championships; as well as wheelchair, legends and exhibition events. Since 1988 the tournament has been played on hard courts at Melbourne Park.
The Australian Open typically has very high attendance, second only to the US Open. It was also the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during wet weather or extreme heat with its two primary courts, Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena, equipped with retractable roofs.

According to the Aussie comentator, del Potro played only a handful of matches in 210. I had no idea the Argentinian had been around that long.

Murray leads 6-3 6-4 but has been very patchy. Credit to Berankis as he is playing some lively stuff for no reward.

Chardy not ready to die either, very interesting match, but I am fully confident DP won't let this go from here on.

DP saves a break point at 3-4 with remarkable back hand, but down a break point again.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
Murray eventually gets the job done. Really didn't play well, but his superior experience won through more than anything (and some hefty serves at the right time), Berankis just couldn't back up his breaks of serve, getting broken back straightaway on two of the three occasions he broke serve (the other time he broke serve was at 5-1 down in the first set).
Still, through to the third round, not too much energy lost again, and hopefully that's his patchy performance out of the way.

Yes MfC Andy was very patchy today but got the job done in straight sets. Perhaps a year or two ago that was the kind of match Andy would have dropped a set or so and allowed to turn the match into a marathon. Must do better though but boy has his draw opened up as potential QF opponents Del Potro and Cilic have been knocked out.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
in his next match he'll play Simon or Monfils which will give him at least more chances of getting into his rhythm. Playing someone like Berankis can't be easy, very few rallies, and you felt Murray never quite got into the match today (ball striking-wise).
Must say I'm loving the slice he's getting on the serve down the T on the ad court though, just wicked. Anyway, time for Robson against Stephens, come on Robson, let's make it two Brits in the second week again!

Andy fans must be laughing at the luck of the draw turn out, lets see whether major one opens up later today in Fed.

Of course if you are a Murray fan you are delighted and personally I can't believe it. I will take that any day of the year as it isn't often (if at all) I can recall the draw opening up so much for him in a slam. However, it must be remembered that potentially Federer awaits in the semi and Novak in the Final. They were always going to be the acid test here.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
this one's started like the match in Hobart, Robson just with way too many errors, and she's 3-0 down despite Stephens not doing much. Robson in these sorts of matches just needs to play the percentages a bit more...

A wild start from Robson and trails 4-0. She is snatching at chances and needs to relax. She has called for the trsiner as she has an arm/shoulder injury.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
Robson seeming to struggle with her shoulder somewhat, calling for the trainer. Better game there though, getting one break back with some superb returns and backhands. Still trails 4-1 though.

Robson now striking the ball beautifully and deep and breaks back again to trail 4-3 as we are back on serve.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
that shoulder problem seems to actually be helping Robson at the moment though, as it's almost forcing her to just take a bit off those FHs and thus play with a bit more security. An awful BH from Stephens gifts her break point, and she dominates it brutally, despite some stirling defense from Stephens, to come back to 3-4.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
shame, Robson losing the first set 7-5 after a decent scrap. She's fighting hard, but that shoulder is preventing her from getting any real power behind the serve and limiting her FH.

this one running away from Robson now, just can't get any cheap points from her serve so she's having to fight for everything.

Laura Robson loses 7-5 6-3 but clearly she is a work in progress and that is frightening considering the calibre of players she has already beaten.

Robson out 7-5 6-3
put up a good fight but in the end a few too many errors, and the lack of serve really hindered her.

What the hell id Fed doing trying to blast Tomic off the court. He should use angles and move him around. The big sloth is useless once he's on the run.

Hmm, Federer's movement looks a touch sluggish to me, and Tomic has certainly added some pop to that FH, but his return of serve just won't be good enough today. Fed to see this one out comfortably...

Yeah I agree he looks slow, sluggish.

But them Tomic does have deceptive pace on his shots, like Berdych. But Fed deffo looks a little slow out there.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
good hold from Tomic from 0-30 down there, some good serves digging him out of trouble. But can he get a foothold on the Federer serve?

huge credit to Tomic there, digging so deep to save multiple BPs and hold for 5-4. Federer surprisingly guilty of being a little passive there IMO, very much letting Tomic take the initiative in pretty much every point.
Raonic through in straights, awaits the winner of this one.

Tomic playing as well as I've seen him play in a Slam right now and Federer below his top level. Interesting stuff.
