First topic message reminder :
Australian Open 2013:
Information: The Australian Open is a major tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. First held in 1905, the tournament is chronologically the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the year – the other three being the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles and junior's championships; as well as wheelchair, legends and exhibition events. Since 1988 the tournament has been played on hard courts at Melbourne Park.
The Australian Open typically has very high attendance, second only to the US Open. It was also the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during wet weather or extreme heat with its two primary courts, Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena, equipped with retractable roofs.

Let's be honest though, the only way Eman would be satisfied with the commentary is if Gary Neville came on and made this noise every time Roger hit a forehand winner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6RG6yxgeFE

Fed with break points in 4 games this set? Yet nothing to show for it.

more great clutch play from Tomic there, he doesn't lack confidence that's for sure. Federer really has upped his game towards the back end of this set, making absolutely no errors, but Tomic is managing to stick with him. Great match

very good from Federer, keeps things tight again and from 5-3 up Tomic cracks with a couple of poor FHs. Federer then takes charge and the set. No way back for Tomic now surely?

Fed uped his level at the tail end of that tie break.

Would have been a robbery if Fed had lost that set. Tomic was barely hanging in there the whole set.

Tomic played one of his best sets ever, it still wasn't enough. Federers only decision now is when to up the stakes..

Much improved from Tomic though, far more fight and aggression.

I'm going to commit heresy here and say that Tomic's FH reminds me of Federer's in his pomp. Not so much for the aesthetic beauty, but for the easy power he generates off the wing and the way he's able to change direction.
He's gone here though, physically he's wilting.

Yeah he looked a bit sluggish at the start but he's dialed in now.
I think the vest is probably just a precaution.

oh that's brilliant, and surely the point which finally breaks Tomic. Great scrambling from Federer, before picking his spot perfectly when he gets the opportunity

Finally a break.
Also looks like Tomic may be tiring a bit - physically or mentally.

really don't think so. He's moving fine, stretching fine on both wings, getting up fine for the overheads and the first serve has looked great. Just think the second serve has been ordinary today, for whatever reason.

If Fed can wrap this up in the next 30 mins then this would have been a perfect work out. He's had to hit a lot of balls and that should groove him in.

I agree, his movement looked a bit sluggish at the start but now he seems to have warmed up. Tomic's made him run a lot.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
this one will be over quickly methinks. Tomic isn't quite strong enough physically yet to compete against these guys at slam events. Losing the second set (when he maybe should have nicked it) was a huge blow.

Jeez, according to these guys Fed's BH is getting better and better each month, let alone each year. By the time he's 35 he'll have the greatest BH ever.

I may be well wide of the mark but I sense that something is troubling Federer tonight. To me he doesn't look well and it's his vast experience that's put him ahead rather than a top notch performance.

In all seriousness though, on Fed, these matches will be good prep.
Fed can beat Murray like he did in WTF 2012, Djoko is his biggest threat.

well to be fair, on today's respective performances Federer would beat Murray comfortably. Interesting (IMO) that Murray and Federer have both played significantly better tennis in the match where they've faced the most threat (Haase for Murray, Tomic for Federer), whereas Djokovic has had a more even level of performance.

I think all us Fed fans are paranoid about the back, much as I expect Rafa fans will be about the knees. We've seen it come out and wreck too much.lags72 wrote:I may be well wide of the mark but I sense that something is troubling Federer tonight. But just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.
