Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
First topic message reminder :
Australian Open 2013:
Information: The Australian Open is a major tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. First held in 1905, the tournament is chronologically the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the year – the other three being the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles and junior's championships; as well as wheelchair, legends and exhibition events. Since 1988 the tournament has been played on hard courts at Melbourne Park.
The Australian Open typically has very high attendance, second only to the US Open. It was also the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during wet weather or extreme heat with its two primary courts, Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena, equipped with retractable roofs.

Don't know whether they're overweight or not JK. They might look it on your TV pictures but that's hardly the same as a professional assessment.
But this wasn't about Nalby or Baghdatis anyway. Your point was that Wawrinka has a "simply horrendous" level of fitness. A claim which to me, and no doubt many others, is simply nonsensical.
Nothing more to add from my side really.

Well well... They've both found a second wind on their serve.

It's a bit like a mini Mahut v. Isner right now - can't touch one another's service.

I think Stan's legs will collapse before his game. This may be one that is decided on fitness!bogbrush wrote:I agree, but matches can be lost on your racquet, as I suspect this might be.HM Murdoch wrote:No, he's struggling too much on his service games. Djokovic to take this now surely.

True. Still massively favour Novak. He always finds a way.

This is all about fitness and mental resolve now - you'd have to fancy Screech on both counts.

That's what Djokovic needed - a tough first point after the change of ends.

Murray is one of a couple of players that can live with him physically though.
Stan isn't one of them. The longer it goes the more certain I am of a Novak win.

Wish he'd have swung on those BP's earlier. Slicing back second serves was not a great idea. Better to go out swinging when it matters.

Out of interest, how long do they continue playing for? (ie is there a cutoff point?)

He's serving and hitting so well though, he's not needing to run much!emancipator wrote:Stan looks knackered.
This is really starting to feel ominous for Novak. He's not outplaying Stan and if he doesn't outlast him, he loses.

Novak has the advantage of serving first and he isn't coming under any pressure on his serve. That puts Stan under even more pressure.

It was all too much for Nadal in 2011, seven times on the trot in fact

He's not even being slightly threatened on serve now though Murdoch. I strongly fancy Novak. Stan had his moment and got a bit too passive. Shame, as it was his aggressive approach that has got him here.

This is excruciating.
On the positive side, a pop-up advert has just told me that Russian women find me attractive. Always nice to get a compliment.

You feel Stan's big chance was at 4-4 when he had a those break points. Novak's gonna wear him down.

I've been helpfully informed by an advertisement that there is a single mum within 3 miles of me who doesn't have time for dating, but just wants to get on with it - perhaps I could visit her and be back in time to see the end of this match....?

Wouldn't it be amazing if Novak quit saying 'I can't continue anymore, I'm too tired, he's too fit'.

This is one of the best single games if tennis I've ever seen.
Simply unbelievable tennis from Stan to hang in.
Can he get out though. Deuce again.

Epic match taken by Djokovic in five hours. Immense match and am gutted for Stan. That will be hard pressed to be bettered all season that match.

Yeah the shirt ripping was a little tasteless after such an epic 5th set and a tremendous last game - but hey it's Djokovic!

You have to be gutted for Stan. Hopefully, though he can take a lot of heart from his performance displaying a new level of mental resilience as well. A lot to be proud about if you are Stan.

Ditto !!
Pity that Wawrinka's level of fitness is "simply horrendous" ; otherwise he might have run Djokovic close
All credit to Djoko. But quit the shirt ripping please. Very immature.
