Wolfhounds v Saxons
First topic message reminder :
Sportsground in Galway Friday night.
Anyone else going?
Went to the last one 2 years ago in Ravenhill and had great crack. Fock all people there though. Probably the same this time or worse.
Cheap night out though. Hour and a half drive from Dublin. Cheap B&B.

Have to admit, I'm looking forward to seeing Cave play. Whenever I watch Ulster, he always seems to put in a good shift, and from what I remember, is quite a ferocious tackler- which is always a good watch!

As to the quality of players, well I guess we will see on Friday night. (though with the weather forecast of wet and windy perhaps we won't). I suspect that as is usual, the Saxons are not as good as the followers of AP rugby think, but then the Wolfhounds too are not as good as the Irish fans think.

Cave is like BOD but not in the squad?
If these guys are so good in your eyes why are none in the Irish squad?
With Kruis I am going more with his MOM at 6 vs Munster. Maybe blinkered and over optimistic but I think he can match his opposite number.
That's not what was said, Cave is the most like for like replacement for BOD that we have in Ireland at the moment, he's not in the squad because his replacement is a different type of player.

Actually it's Crane who worries me the most. If B.Vunipola was at 8 I would be much more at ease.
I wouldn't be worried Beshocked big Jordan is returning to form slowly but surely and is a good captain. I'm surprised he's come back into the England fold so quickly whilst team mate Waldrom is overlooked.
England have good kicking options at 9, 10 and 15 as well as a defensively strong midfield. Clearly they are expecting bad conditions on Galway. A real test for Wade, if he shines in a wet and windy Galway I think he'll make his debut in the 6N.

Sam,
Waldrom is in the main training squad, so is not available for this game. Billy V was also training with them, except he is now injured.

Re: Wolfhounds v Saxons
Tell me about it Yappy, Tigers are down both 8s and three locks (one of which would have offered cover at 8). Not to mention both 10s as well.
Wasps again get to play against a weakened Tigers. Our team will be a bit stronger than last time at least.
Ayerza, Hawkins, Castro
Deacon, Andrew
Croft, Noone, Salvi
Harrison, Bowden
Allen, Smith
Morris, Tait, Thompstone
Mulipola, Chuter, Balmain, Thorpe, A N Other forward, Young, Cornwall, Goneva.
We are really stuck for locks with Wells and Price on England under 20s duty, Cain picking up an injury playing for Notts (not sure how serious that is), Slater, Kitchener and Parling with the Saxons and England first team. Mafi's muscle strain hasn't come at a good time.

Re: Wolfhounds v Saxons
Good to see Croft back there though and alongside Salvi they should work well against Wasps who'll be without their key 6 and 8.
Quins are only missing Marler, Gray, Buchanan, Robson, Robshaw, Care, JTH, Lowe and Brown so not too bad to be honest we have cover for all of them. Lambert, Ward, ?, Mathews, Wallace, Dickson, Casson, Hopper and OLH.
We have a couple of injured players too (Brooker, Skinner and Chisholm) but touch wood we're quite lucky on this front.
If they U20's can't be selected then this'll probably be our team:
Marfo, Ward, Collier
Twomey, Matthews
Trayfoot, Wallace (C), Clifford
Dickson, Botica
Smith, Casson, Hopper, Stegmann, OLH
Allen,Mayhew,Lambert,Guest,Chisholm,Burns,Grimoldby,Walker

You don't have a game this weekend. Some of those guys will definitely be released the first weekend of the Six Nations.

It's still a lot of players being taken from an Amlin team. Surely form would dictate that the majority of the names above won't be starting 6N opening match?

It's not just who starts it's those on the bench and Deccie holds on to some players for inexplicable reasons even when they aren't playing, but some will go back to Leinster, Munster, Ulster and Connacht before next weekends games.

I agree that he holds on to players a little too long. If you factor out injuries, he tends to be very slow and methodical on bringing through players for the 1st XV.
You get added in to the end of the 'Carton House' style bonding sessions.
Then you get to be part of the wolfhound squad.
Then you get to start for the hounds.
If you do well then you start getting into the main squad.
Up till then it all seems great............ if you were part of a club/province where this would happen in half a season. The problem is that this process takes 2 6Ns, 2 AIs and possibly a churchill cup trip to happen.
Then you hit the brick wall which is the inability to cut poor performers.....

10 George Ford (Leicester Tigers)
9 Richard Wigglesworth (Saracens)
1 Nick Wood (Gloucester Rugby)
2 Joe Gray (Harlequins)
3 Paul Doran-Jones (Northampton Saints)
4 Graham Kitchener (Leicester Tigers)
5 George Robson (Harlequins)
6 George Kruis (Saracens)
7 Will Fraser (Saracens)
8 Jordan Crane (Leicester Tigers, captain)
Replacements:
16 Rob Buchanan (Harlequins)
17 Matt Mullan (Worcester Warriors)
18 Shaun Knight (Gloucester Rugby)
19 Ed Slater (Leicester Tigers)
20 Jamie Gibson (London Irish)
21 Joe Simpson (London Wasps)
22 George Lowe (Harlequins)
23 Kyle Eastmond (Bath Rugby)
Tomkins at 13, and Kruis at 6 the big stories, I think. I thought Kruis was a 7?
Anyway, more on RFU here:
http://www.rfu.com/news/2013/january/news-articles/240113_saxons_squadire
Well, Daly at FB is interesting, lenty of people seem to think that's where he'll end up. Also the England coaches clearly see something in Tompkins. May isn't fit enough I presume. The most interesting selection is Eastmond covering FH. Balancing out the experimental backs is quite an experienced pack.
Poor weather and the Saxons have struggled away from home recently. I think the coaches will be happy if the score is tight and they get some promising displays from the younger players.

I think Tigers will rest players against the Scarlets as we tend not to give a frig about away games in the LV but fortress Welford needs it's reputation maintaining and the fans get a bit irked if they turn up and we lose at home. Though as I've said Deacon might have to suck it up and play both unless Cain recovers or England under 20s release one of the two.

There is a fair bit of talent I want to see over the next few months and hopefully the Wolfie game this week will see a lot of them on the pitch
They are playing the USA on the 8th of June in Houston, Texas. Canada on the 15th in a venue yet to be announced, and a second test against Canada in Vancouver on the 22nd.
I might try and head up to Vancouver for the weekend, should be easy enough to get tickets.
