It Was So Obvious They Were Afraid Empty It Was So Obvious They Were Afraid

Post by davidemore Wed 23 Jan 2013, 11:51 am

Who in recent times has come across as the most blatantly afraid fighter, pre-fight?

I'm talking in the interviews and press conferences leading up to the bout.

Yusaf Mack was bad. He stared at the table, mumbled his opinions, and let his coach do all the talking. Also, Chad Dawson always sounds fearful, and that guy has fought at a high level for a long time now.

Thoughts?

Macarinelli at the Haye fight weigh in. When Haye easily made the weight he knew he was in trouble and looked it.

What is wrong with being afraid????..Tyson admitted he was...Spinks admitted he was before he fought...

We've all been afraid..whether it's walking through a back alley in Roxbury or hearing that the father-in-law might want his house back!! Laugh

.and as you knowwith fear it heightens the senses.....

It's what you do when you are afraid........that counts!!

Might not qualify as recent, but Kenny Norton, any time he was up against a puncher, seemed to shrink. The Foreman fight is the best example of what pure intimidation can do to a fine fighter with great physical attributes of his own.

As Truss says, it's what you do with fear that counts. When Norton was afraid, he seemed to pray for the end.

Always thought of Kenny as a bully.....

Max Baer.........Apparently before he fought Louis they couldn't get him out of the changing room...he froze....

Between rounds they tried to cajole him by saying "He hasn't even started hitting you yet!"

To which he is supposed to have replied "Watch the ref because someone is beating the s**t out of me"

Joking aside...His trainer said he saw real fear in Baer's eyes for the first time..

Thats not True Manos - he has the talk the walk and the chalk, only in the ring does he..er balk. Audley is more frightened of throwing punches than he is of takin them. Maybe he slightlybruised a butterflys wing with a right cross and now lives in constant fear of crippling his opponent.

Post by 88Chris05 Wed 23 Jan 2013, 12:51 pm

I remember thinking that Gatti looked terrified and completely outpsyched before the first bell against Mayweather. If I recall correctly, he had some pyrotechnics as a part of his ring walk and kept flinching every time they went off, and his eyes were as wide as saucers when he saw Floyd looking across the ring at him.

Anyway, Floyd then proceeded to hand out the mother of all spankings to a hopelessly outclassed and outgunned Arturo in what was probably his most attacking and punch-perfect performance ever, so I guess you could say that Gatti's fear was justified!

Seldon against Tyson would be another one. As Truss says, nothing wrong with being afraid....Unless it causes you to totally freeze and mentally fall apart, which is obviously what happened in Bruce's case!

The two obvious big fight one's that stick out for me, were Bruno Tyson 2, and spinks Tyson. Both subsequently froze. As truss says, Spinks says he was always afraid, but he sure as hell never looked like that before any other fight. I had slim hopes for spinks before the fight, but they evaporated when I saw the ring entrance.

That was one of the funniest things I've seen at a weigh in. I like Enzo but the look that came across his and Warrens faces was hillarious.

It’s Ken Norton, what is with all this Kenny stuff. Just finished a book on Floyd Patterson and the author of that called everyone called Ken Kenny, even Ken Buchanan, who nobody calls Kenny. It annoyed the hell out of me then as well.

Afraid not Milky, it isn’t Jeff either. To be honest when people started calling everyone Kenny on here I was quite excited. I mentioned how much it annoyed me in my book review of Patterson and I thought people were just doing it to wind me up, thought this meant some people had actually read one of my reviews.

Lucien Bute looked absolutely scared shi***** against Froch. Seeing him so stiff and rigid in there was great but sad. Also, in his last fight he looked very scared, very. His balance was off.

Bruno looked like he was going to cry against Iron Mike. It was all in his head.

I don't think boxers really do "fear" - as if they were scared they wouldn't step through the ropes.

Think they have to be commended for getting in the ring in the first place.

Think audley did the same. Both were consequently very keen to get fights over quickly so they could change their underpants... but came up with different strategies to achieve that goal.

Bruno was scared for both Tyson fights.

Bruno v Tyson 1 - Bruno held on for most of that fight. Yeah he landed a lucky left hook but for the most part did NOTHING in that fight but hold on for dear life.

Bruno v Tyson 2 - Remember Bruno crossing himself like he expected some devine intervation? Well all he should of expected was a pacing...which he got.

Also will never forget the fear on Spinks face when he entered the ring to meet Tyson.
