at least one of match officials saw the coming together, though not full extent of the challenge.
What kind of backwards ass logic is this?

The annoying thing is the FA can make an exception in extreme circumstances. The Ben Thatcher/Pedro Mendes incident was originally punished with a yellow card, but the FA eventually banned him for eight games.

I don't get how the linesman not seeing the whole incident excuses McManaman. Agree with the Newcastle statement, rules clearly not fit for purpose

The Ben Thatcher incident was nothing more than assault though. This wasn't anywhere near as bad as that.
This isn't the first time this rule has been used stupidley this season, Howard Webb said he saw a Stoke player stamp on Garcia for City. However from the angle he was at there was no way he could have seen that both feet left the ground or seen the force of the stamp.

How can the FA rescind red cards if the referee has seen the initial incident.
Scandless decision. This was nothing more than assualt, despite what the apologists will tell you.

LJ if this was the other way round your tune would be different. He actually wins the ball and makes contact on the follow through, hardly knocking someone through the advertising boards was it.

Not fit for purpose is certainly right. Puts the referees in an awful position too, I'm sure they would much rather have the FA take charge over it, rather than making them look fools. I bet you even McManaman would accept a three game ban, the only man who wouldnt is the off his rocker Whelan.
I'm no apologist mind, I see the intent for the ball, you can be a sensationalist if you prefer though.

Re: 2012/13 Premier League discussion thread part 4
It's a ridiculous decision, even those of us that feel that it was an accident would want to see a three game ban.
I'm not sure how the FA can justify the decision, one official saw it, but not the full extent, therefore FA are perfectly justified in applying retrospective action.
They say they are not interested in "re-reffing" games, but that's exactly what they do. For example, rescinding red cars, applying retrospective bans in the past, dealing with racism incidents. It was quite clear that none of the officials really saw the incident and a three game ban should have been given.
The FA needs to make it clear what their position is, because they do so many things that contradict each other.

Hampo, stop talking gash. My opinion would be no different it a Mackem was on the receiving end. I am perfectly capable of being objective.
And the fact he won the ball is totally irrelevant. He done so projecting himself in like a missile.

stupid rule, but its hardly the first time this has been the case. simply the rule needs to change. not sure why the refs just didn't claim they saw it fully would protect themselves then when they are clearly proven wrong. bit like wenger does every time his players gets sent off

So what are exceptional circumstances?
Is trying to break someone's leg not exceptional? Does it have to be head contact?

They'd have to believe he was going in to do harm, and as you have found not everyone believes that to be the case. I think that would count as exceptional. Its still a load of crud, they have no backbone the FA, none at all.

I genuinely don't see how anyone could think in making a challenge like that, that it wouldn't do serious harm.
Agree on the FA. They are utterly spineless.

Michael Bailey @michaeljbailey
One bit for tomorrow's papers is a throwaway line: Massadio Haidara "it is understood is yet to receive an apology". Sort it out Wigan.

Why would Wigan apologise when they think it is a fair tackle.

I used past tence Jack. I'm aware you haven't mentioned him for a while however you have previously gone through a phase where you mentioned him after every game.

Just saw this posted on twitter. Not sure why people bother to do this kind of thing when they surely know the police will take action.

Seems Sir Gus Poyet is staying at Brighton.
Wonder who for the Reading post then?
Personally, i think Adkins or Di Canio, has to be. Or maybe give someone like Curbishley or Ray Wilkins interm manager until the end of the season. Then look for a manager to take them up next season.

West Ham fans apart (and maybe they're against it?), the decision to give them the OS is nothing short of abhorrent. I don't have time to write something ranty just now but I will later.

Knows how to buy a free kick off a referee. Nowadays players know if they feel something and go down, more often than not they'll get a free kick. Sad but true.
He has been very good for us this season. Surprised me for sure. Knows how to gain a yard for a shot/cross

I have a gut feeling that this weekend Sunderland are gonna get something out of Utd.
I have method behind the madness! Fletcher is out (seemingly), which on the face of it, is a huge blow for the Mackems. However I think it could be a blessing in disguise, as Fletcher/Graham up top has failed miserably. With Fletcher out, you'd figure he'd go Graham up top, with Sessegnon in behind, which I think, makes them a much better unit than with the 4-4-2

i wouldn't be surprised olly, our attention should firmly be on monday. with a 2nd string out against sunderland. saying that though a second string should still be able to get a draw at least against that current sunderland team

i dont see kagawa playing both games certainly not if he's been away with japan. young should feature in one game at least. evans for me is probably first choice these days so would probably go vidic and jones cb for sunderland with smalling at rb, then rio, evans and rafael against chelsea. also see wellbeck playing in at least one game, current form he's got a good chance for chelsea, was one of our best players in both madrid games. easily outshone rooney and rvp.

He's a bit of a runt is Suarez. Certainly has a bit of a nasty streak in him with the stamps earlier this year.
You'd have to wonder if he'd do the same if Martin Keown was marking him.
