Rafa has been 'missed' brigade
I am getting sick of these comments indicating that moonballing extravaganza, Rafala Kneedal has been missed by 'true' tennis fans. Well I am certainly a true tennis fan and I feel I am not being represented by those making that comment. Infact there are thousands, possibly millions who were more excited about tennis while Nadal was out of the game, so those making that comment, please just write you are speaking for 'yourself' and not for 'true tennis fans/everyone'. He has been missed by Nadal fans only, not everyone else.

It's Kneedull, not Kneedal.
And I came up with the phrase, I've copyrighted it.

Being a tennis fan does not mean you are a Nadal fan, the two are not mutually exclusive and should remain separate. These so called Nadal fanboys have not been watching tennis since he's been out so how can they say they speak for tennis? Those lot have been in hibernation.

Re: Rafa has been 'missed' brigade
I sense that tennis is on the verge of a catastrophe once Federer & Nadal go. Seriously, I'm not on a wind up here. Strip them out, and unless someone comes through who brings something surprising to the game it's getting decidely WTA out there.
I'll give Nadal one thing at the least; no way, ever, could anyone say he plays in a conventional manner.

I don't like Rafa but I think most will agree that he brings something else to the game, even if it's only a pantomime-villain figure that people can hate.
I nearly always want him to lose, I don't like his style and I don't like his tactics. But I've missed him. Tonight he plays Federer - and that's a phrase we've been unable to use for the last nine months. Soon he'll be playing Nole and Andy M and the amazing rivalries and match-ups will continue. What's not to like?

Re: Rafa has been 'missed' brigade
Agree with BBs and SFPs comments about him bringing something diff erent. All sports needed variety at the top to make it interesting to the fans. Nadal isnt Federer...and we havent needed another Federer, yet (hopefully Dimitrov can give us a flavour of Fed in years to come if he can get his head sorted...he's still only 21).
Its too short-sighted to say fans of Nadal aren't fans of tennis - that's what some ex-members of 606V2 used to say. What constitutes a fan is many and varied...I'm not a massive fan of Federer (shock, horror), preferring Nadal, but to link that to me not being a fan of tennis when I live and breathe it 24/7 and travel 100s of miles weekly for it would be ridiculous.
People need to recognise how many juniors Nadal has encouraged to pick up a racquet in the UK (and globally)...far more than any of Roger Draper's ivory tower schemes.

Re: Rafa has been 'missed' brigade
Well said, Lydian. The someone-to-hate figure is very useful in sport, although of course I accept that some absolutely love Rafa.
One thinks back to snooker in the 1980s, where nearly everyone (well, apart from my dad, that is) wanted Steve Davis to lose.
Many like to see the big-spending soccer clubs (Chelsea, Man City) falling flat on their faces, while some don't like Fergie and want Man Untd to lose.
How would clubs who hate their neighbours and want them ground into the dust actually feel if they didn't play them any more ? If all teams/players were popular, half the fun for supporters would disappear.

Re: Rafa has been 'missed' brigade
Yep SFP, we're tribal...we're divisive...we like yin vs yang.
For every Punch we need a Judy (Murray).
For every Federer, Sampras or Mac we need a Nadal, Agassi or Borg.
Once we get a tour of only Borgs or Nadals at the top then we lose the contrast...but more importantly we lose the tribalism, and every sport needs that. Tribalism feeds interest, banter, brings money in and keeps these forums ticking over. Without tribalism, without Federer vs Nadal, the game - any game - is boring.
If we're to rely only on discussing Djokovic and Murray in future then by lord its going to be dry. Tennis needs X-Factor characters and contrasts...it needs Gulbis to do well, Dimitrov to do well, and unorthodox guys like Nadal who learnt tennis in sheltered places to come through as well. Once its all identikit DHBHs, serves and DTL drills then as fans we're ****'ed. And so becomes the game itself.

The huge joke is that even Fed Novak and Murray have missed him. Federer himself stated that Rafa brings something to the game that has been missing in his absence
It is a Wum article JM as only you know how to write.. the only really really good thing that came out of Rafa being absent was that you went missing too.

They are instructed to say that or do you believe everything being said by tennis players? It's like Nadal when he says 'i'm not the favourite' when he clearly is.Haddie-nuff wrote:Josiah Maiestas wrote:You've seen how many say that?Henman Bill wrote:worst article I've seen for a while

I've yet to be convinced, Re this article that Nadal's return has been good in any way for tennis, infact it's only been good for him and his fans.

The only point to it is Lydian that JM is getting the attention.. judging by the crowds at IW crammed into the court where Rafa was just practicing I think that JM is only trying to convince himself...give him a few more minutes in the spotlight bless him.

I agree that the OP should be free to air his views - however wacky most of us might deem them to be.
For me, bogbrush's post at 11.42 pretty much sums things up. There really is no sign of anyone 'breaking through' as things stand, and in terms of fresh interest for the men's game I see very little to get excited about...

Re: Rafa has been 'missed' brigade
On the one hand fair enough lags72 and yes its all well and good luvsports to say that...but when JM puts out a WUM oriented statement like "these so called Nadal fanboys have not been watching tennis since he's been out so how can they say they speak for tennis" what do you expect? Those of us who are known Nadal supporters get tarred with the same old brush of being called "fanboys" and we aren't supporters of tennis. Gets a little wearing from time to time...especially given JMs tennis knowledge is so encyclopaedic.
Perhaps if posters refrained from labelling other posters in derogatory manners they would get treated better themselves. But that isn't JM's intent - to treat and be treated well.

Re: Rafa has been 'missed' brigade
Yes, you are right lydian.
I can never consider the 'labelling' of other posters to have any merit, and the minute I see terms like 'fanboys' being thrown around I tend to lose interest in the content of the post itself.
Part of the ethos of 606v2 was to be far less tolerant of the tiresome and fairly regular wummery that so often plagued the original forum ; whether or not this article crosses the line is perhaps a matter of judgement.

Re: Rafa has been 'missed' brigade
I agree 606V2 is a much better place than the one 606v1 ended up being, we don't want blatant wummery, but nor do we want sanitisation either. However, calling people fanboys is clearly wummery.
This article is fairly tame but the "fanboy" term has been thankfully as absent as Nadal himself. As soon as Nadal returns up pops JM to remind us the value he brings to v2. Anyway, nothing to see here, lets move on...
