Rumour Mill - Mayweather v Ortiz to fight at Cowboys Stadium?
First topic message reminder :
I can't-in fact I WON'T-vouch for the accuracy of this statement, because the site it's from is pretty bloody awful, although behind their terrible writing there's usually a nugget of truth. Anyway, link's here:
http://www.boxingnews24.com/2011/05/mayweather-to-fight-in-cowboys-stadium-by-end-of-summer-says-roger/#more-64787
Long story sport is that Roger Mayweather's apparently hinting at Floyd Jr fighting at the Dallas Cowboys stadium in late summer 2010. If true, the implications are obvious - pack the stadium more than a certain Filipino did, and restate your dominance as the so-called 'cash cow' of boxing.
Of course, uncle Roger could quite easily be saying something just to keep Floyd Jr's name in the media, but the other implication from this is that if Mayweather does fight at the Cowboys Stadium it's a clear precursor to setting the stage for a rubber match of negotiations, hopefully successful, between the Mayweathers and the representatives of the Filipino chap. I forget his name.
Wait and see, eh?

Would be intersting to see how well Ortiz deals with the big step up in levels. I would like to see this fight but will beleive it's going to happen when I see a reliable source. Have you got a source?

He is a world title holder. Huge dollars for Ortiz also. He is a very skilled fighter, coming off a career best win against the unbeaten Berto.
This is an extremely danherous fight for an ageing fighter like floyd to take on a hungry YOUNG lion eager to prove the doubters wrong.
Credit for Floyd for ecven considering this as a comeback fight.
I will most definately watch this fight. So will most boxing fans. I doubt you will though

Nothing signed as yet, just negotiations, but it a move that wouldn't surprise me from the Mayweather camp.

This thread should be merged with the other ' Floyd at Cowboy Stadium ' one. Will leave it here for ten minutes so that everybody knows where it is and then they will be merged.

In related news, the Margarito vs Cotto II match up scheduled for September the 17th is very likely to be off because Margarito has not recovered from his injuries that he had suffered in the fight with Manny Pacquiao.

Assuming Floyd wins this fight, he should rematch SSM as SSM is now more dangerous than when they first met.

Ortiz is still inexperiened, easy to hit and relies more on heart and determination that guile and technique, easy to see why Floyd is plumping for this fight.

Aye, Floyd's touted as taking on the lad who's just been involved in a 5/6 KD thriller with another young gun as opposed to feasting on the rotting carcass of a faded great who is nearly ten years past his best.
Damn that Floyd and his willingness to fight someone who can get out of a chair without assistance

Interesting then. Floyd only fights the best available. I wonder if Ortiz will take random tests? What do yoi think? Do you think he should?

Ortiz should take any test the commission requires.
As I said early I don't think Floyd should worry about Ortiz too much. Should be another borefest UD.

Khan's style is much more suited to beating Maywether and with the Bradley fight falling through it would have been the much better fight to take.

So, Manny and Floyd are ranked p4p number one and two, have been for some time now, both campaign at WW yet Shane Mosley somehow managed to be ranked as the 2nd BEST WELTERWEIGHT.D4thincarnation wrote:azania wrote:Assuming Floyd wins this fight, he should rematch SSM as SSM is now more dangerous than when they first met.

Or was Manny excluded due to the 36 minutes he spent at (cough) Light Middleweight?

You mean as opposed to being an embarrassingly painful one-sided beatdown of a man who should have long since retired from fighting?

Jab speed and movement.
Ortiz, throws a lot of punches but leaves himself very open.
Ofcourse Khan style is much more suited to beating Mayweather.

If Mayweather DID fight Khan you'd be uttering your customary monotone tedious unfounded gibberish about his dodging bona fide welters while Saint Emmanuel of Manila is fighting the no.2 welter in the world.
If Khan is such a force at welter why isn't lover boy fighting him ? oops ! I forgot. They're FRIENDS.
Aww ! Isn't that sweet ?

Ortiz did train at the wild card under Roach's tutelage for the Berto fight. Will be interesting to see if he does the same if he does face Mayweather.

Why will it be interesting? Roach isn't going to learn anything about Floyd he doesn't already know and certainly won't be able to teach Ortiz anything that he'll be able to use to defeat him either.D4thincarnation wrote:Ortiz did train at the wild card under Roach's tutelage for the Berto fight. Makes perfect sense to me. Ortiz may have beat Berto but Berto was very overrated, was luck against Collazo.
Khan is much more skilled, has the speed and the jab to cause Mayweather a lot problems.

So long as it makes perfect sense to you I'm pretty safe in assuming that it is idiocy. You know, like Mosley was too old at thirty nine but young enough at forty.

You may joke but in his post fight interview, Ortiz thanked Manny for the advice he gave him when Manny phoned him on the day of the fight.
But the point I was originally making was the fact that Roach has studied Mayweather style and trained Oscar for the Mayweather fight and devised a gameplan, which was working till Oscar off the gameplan.

And Lo ! They did gaze upon Emmanuel of Philippi and did say, of one accord : " Truly, he is the chosen one, who will lead boxing out of captivity. " And the dark Floyd was, thereto, cast into the fiery pit, to listen evermore to She of the Gaga, and there was wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Got it, BALTI. Thanks.
So, how do we reckon Floyd v Ortiz or Cotto would pan out ?
Ortiz is an aggressive, big puncher, but lack experience and guile. Leaves him self open for that straight counter right, which Berto put him down a few time and what Floyd uses a lot. Floyd on points.
The Cotto fight would have to happen at light-middle. Cotto is a come forward aggressive fight too but has a lot of ring experience a great jab fast hands. Could be a tricky one. Miguel may take this one by a UD.
I stand by my views.
Interesting how no one has a problem with when in just a possibility but now there is more substance and the fight could happen, my view suddendly becomes wrong.
Go figure.

Oh, that screws up our theory then, because Mosley's getting better as he gets older but if John's head is younger, he can't possibly be as good as Shane.
Wonder if we can dig up SRR, after all this time he should be at his peak age-wise and there should be no difficulty in making the weight

Yes, I'm sure your experience at the highest level, and the experience you have drawn from several camps as well as the Roach camp, at which you closed out your world class career, is absolutely authoritative.
We are so lucky that you share your first hand experience concerning which stable prepares its fighters, psychologically, the best.
Thank you.

If Pacquiao phoned me up and told me I was a better boxer than my opponent faster and strong and that I would win. I sure that would get rid of my doubts and I would go into the fight with much more confidence.
Think Manny might have been down the wild card with Ortiz a few time.
But if Ortiz is going to beat Mayweather he will have to change a lot of things, and I don't think he has the experience or the time to adapt that much in the time.

Pity Manny doesn't ring you up to coach you in impartiality, then. Oh, and Ortiz doesn't have the experience, but Khan does ? At the highest level ? At welter ?

As can living in a comfort zone fighting lightweights, avoiding Cotto, Margarito at various stages, as well as avoiding a real fight to fight an overrated lightweight, it really is puzzling, also daft rants on the internet prove the guy is 'HAPPY' NOT!

I actually agree with D4 that it will take someone with a similar style to Khan who can beat Floyd. But Khan and/or Pac are not the ones who can do it. Neither possess enough skill to beat a master boxer like Floyd.

Pacquiao wouldnt rely on a daft shoulder roll that B level fighters cant expose, he would rough him up, suffocate him and outwork him, that doesnt require solely skill, Pacquiao would want it more, of course he'd tag Mayweather at more than 1 point, with his hands being 2 times faster, also his feet he has that attribute

'2 times faster'? Scientifically proven, of course. Right?

Floyd has a great defense.
He just doesn't fight anyone that can beat him :run2:
