Music Cup Round 5 - Boybands

First topic message reminder :

It's the one everyone has been waiting for - the boybands are back in town. We'll have a cracking debate on this one.

Round 4 saw a comfortable win for the greatest song of all time in Oasis' Don't Look Back in Anger. This round is filled with less iconic songs than the last round (depending on what is iconic to you, I suppose) but many of the expected suspects are in there.

Special mention to the man who nominated Lonely Island - genius. Equally special mention to the entire board because no-one stooped to include One Direction. It would have been a bold move on a male-dominated sports forum.

As always, select your favourite TWO, "favourite" perhaps used more loosely in this round than others.

Round 6 will be....songs with a name in the title. That's proper names too, not like Apple or Moon-Unit.

Of all the things i thought id say during a boy band round. I wish lonely island consistent and daily bouts of food poisoning.

I neither count Wham as a boy band nor have any respect for anyone who chooses Club Tropicana as their best song.

Never Forget is a very good song, I actually don't mind boy bands. These were my school disco years, I've never been as good a dancer as back then.

I like the Monkees (and Neil Diamond) but I reckon last train to Clarksville is better.

I went for Backstreets Back (great video and catchy song) and Mmm Bop which is impossible not to sing along to.

Wham were a close third.

I've gone for Back for Good - because its probably one of the best pop songs ever written, by THE ultimate boyband.

I've also gone for Backstreet's Back because it had a super video. One of the best pop videos of all time

Back For Good is one of those songs that's great when you first hear it, but irritating after a few listen's, well to me it is.

If you lads said that within ear shot of me, you'd both have cauliflower ears. 5ive are the greatest band of all time. They'll make you "get down now".

Two biggest shocks are Father and Son getting any votes at all, and Hanson being classified as a 'boy' band.

I once saw "5ive". I put in the "s because although they were advertised as 5ive it was actually just two of them in the union at Uni. A depressing night for all involved. Both 5ive songs are the wrong choice and split the vote.

Still can't believe hero chose Club Tropicana. Not even dropping subtle hints anymore.

This round seems to be about the best band rather than best song, as they all seem to be their biggest hits, apart from a couple (including mine).

Because The Monkees were originally supposed to be an imaginary band on TV, their producers/supervisors didn't think it was necessary for them to play or write the music on their records. For their first two albums the guys didn't play (but Mike Nesmith did write a few songs) mainly because of their music supervisor, Don Kirshner, who's standards were #1 hits & he didn't believe The Monkees were capable of that. After many battles with the "big guys," the Monkees were finally allowed to play their own music on their third album "Headquarters" & also performed live concerts. As far as writing their own songs, The Monkees themselves wrote some of the band's most memorable tunes such as "Mary, Mary," "For Pete's Sake," "The Girl I Knew Somewhere," "Goin' Down," "Listen to the Band," & many others."
