Scotland changes for South Africa
First topic message reminder :
After a lacklustre display when we were outmuscled and outplayed by a tough Samoa team we now prepare to face the boks!
What changes can we make to try to get any kind of credible performance next week?
For me the glaring error in the starting team was the selection of Gilchrist and Kellock. Neither can last 80 minutes so you end up playing with effectively one lock for the end of the match. Remember Gilchrist being smashed around 78 minutes as he drove for the line?
One of the reasons that Kellock, Ryder and Swinson are such an effective trio for the weege is that Ryder and Swinson can both easily last the 80.
I would start Swinson and Kellock and have Ryder on the bench, oh sorry he isnt good enough to get in this tour squad! But it would be nice to have a lock that can actually carry effectively wouldnt it?
I cant face going over all the other parts of the team that didnt work, but im sure you guys will have some thoughts.
Seriously though, we could do with Swinson and his ability to turn over ball in contact as we will need to try and slow down as much of the Boka ball as we can.

Momentum has really swung away from Scotland now, things just aren't working
Wasn't that kick knocked off a SA player? Shouldn't it be a Scotland lineout?

Ref has been fine, penalty count favours Scotland - he has been pretty much spot on
The TMO is questionable, but I guess you could call it a YC, it is his decision over the try that raises the questions though

Can't believe that Poite gave a penalty try. TMO is desperate for us to lose. He tried to badly to get Dunbar's try ruled out...
Re: Scotland changes for South Africa
The TMO is South African
If the TMO is going to be playing a larger role in games, shouldn't they be impartial?

Scotland have had their share of lucky calls, the penalty try decision was perfectly fair too.

If South Africa go on to win this game and its close then it will be a tainted victory. The TMO has boht tried to and has had a MAJOR impact on this game.

Re: Scotland changes for South Africa
In the past South African teams seemed tough and strong and brave, this team is niggly and has less skill than team of Allan Jacobsens, they've been reduced to relying on a TMO who seems to be cantering towards the Man of the Match award.

if South Africa go on to win this then the ref and TMO have played a huge part and should share the MOM award

Re: Scotland changes for South Africa
The Ref's had a breakdown now. That wasn't a knock on. Can't watch this anymore. It's always the same when an NH teams plays a SH team. The Ref gets worried that he will be at the centre of controversy if the NH team wins and starts to throw out ridiculous decisions for the SH team.

Nonsense decision. The Scotland player was on his feet.

Re: Scotland changes for South Africa
Scotland is in this game because the ref has had no control of discipline. Every rolling maul set up from a line out by SA has been illegally dropped by the Scots. Defence had been offside all game and Scots have slowed down almost every rut when SA is on attack. Blocked SA runners competing for high balls. The Ref has turned this game to a farce because of it. As I said on an earlier post it also shows how SA miss a Bakkis or Juan Smith to step in where the ref fails. Bismarck will make a difference as will Alberts when he is back.
Scotland would not be in this game with a serious ref. there approach from the first minute was to niggle, irritate and push the laws.

Really harsh penalty, that was a Scotland penalty for me - he was on his feet
Terrible decision to go for touch though?

Shame for the boys. Injuries and the experience of the Boks were the difference.

We have to put up with Poite at least 5 or 6 times a year.

30-17 flattering, I think 23-17 would have been a fair score.

Stop listening to the saffer commentators - you're allowed to drop the maul instantly - which we did a lot

Well disappointing finish there with a missed tackle, was waiting for Fraser Brown to come on and score the winning try but it wasn't to be. Much better performance than I think any of us expected so can't be too disappointed.

Seriously entertaining game, well done to the Scots for a gutsy performance but the Boks just had too much in the tank.

Not from the side you're not.
The young SA forwards need more bite (not literally). Tough, huge, strong etc but little menace compared to others.
JDV is not the man to captain the Boks.

Ahhhhh, loses like this are far harder to take then getting pumped. Really thought an upset was on the cards. Fantastic effort by the team. To think we played so much of the game with 2 scrum half's on the field. Very proud.

Got to say i am very pleased with the Scott - Dunbar combination!

I was told Arno Botha is the next Juan Smith type flanker.

Re: Scotland changes for South Africa
Headline from an SA website:
'The Boks never got out of first gear in beating Scotland in Nelspruit.
And they didn’t have to.
The Scots were courageous, willing and tireless. But they always lacked the quality in attack and the polish as a team to make the Boks pay for an absent performance.
The Boks won 30-17 after trailing 17-6 and they played more at idle pace than in first gear.'
Don't entirely agree. There were moments in the first half where SA played with no coolness , brains or control. They looked seriously ruffled and let the Scots irritate them too much. Missed a John Smit type captain then. Coetzee at 6 looks like a headless chicken. Kolisi had a great debut.
Botha has a long way to go. No Juan Smith yet. I fear he will be out for a while now. I see Lappies as more of a Juan Smith.

Yeah you are. The whole point is it's not a maul yet, therefore no offside

Hard luck on Al Kellock with that last penalty for 'hands in ruck' - for the first time in his life the fella gets properly involved in a ruck instead of just inspecting it, and he gets penalised!

Would guess that the website is Keo. He really is a plank, thought he'd've shut up after his stupid predictions.
