Wales U20s vs South Africa U20s
First topic message reminder :
No one watching?
Wales holding on very well for the first 15,
Scrumhalf is excellent
And it looks like Wales have butchered a try scoring chance form a clever lineout move

Ruby, he told me he went to Italy because he was struggling for a contract, and the premiership is crap and not to a standard where he wants his boy to be, looking at his performances in this World Cup you would think at least one region could give him one of those emerging contract things they dish out.

I think if he was good enough he'd have a contract Dowlais - He lacks the physical aggression required, he's too nice, takes more after his father than his grandfather

Probably somewhere like Bath or Gloucester. If that fails then his spiritual home Glynneath

That change of pace and angle is phenominal
Just needs to work on the deceleration and step, then we can have another stepping Williams
Jordan Williams has been talked of as a FH, but I think his future could well be as a counter attacking fullback - I hope we get to see him more at the Scarlets next season, he has already been making a name for himself before this tour.

Will Jordan Williams end up like Matthew Morgan - great broken field runner at this level but will probably never be able to cope/compete in the pro game due to tiny size???

A word about Sam Davies. Many Some players are selected at U20 level, because they are early developers that mature more quickly than their peers. Sam Davies is clearly not one of these, he has often looked a boy amongst men and I admire his contribution all the more for this. He's taken a lot of stick on these boards but I think he's changed a few minds now.

He plays in the LV Cup for the Ospreys and has done for the past 2 years, they are bringing him on slowly. He's only 19 though so no rush

Patchell is 19
Davies has had a good tournement, still has a lot to work on if he wants to make it to the top. He should be targeting improving his defence to start with

Fair comment, but the Ospreys have Dan Biggar, and Matthew Morgan already so Sam will have to fight his way in!
Not to be disrespectful to the Blues, but Tovery and Gareth Davies are not in Biggar's league so becoming first choice is a lot easier for Patchell than Sam Davies.

That guy Snedds made a good one the other day of Phillips winking and blowing a kiss to the Waratahs scrum half after the Tahs SH pushed him in the face.

Ah yes I remember it well. Sunday morning, hungover and wondering WTF is going on! What a break from Sweeney that led to Shane's try that put us in the lead. As the commentator says "there will be many Welsh people around the world who have never ever seen a situation like this". Too right mate.

Davies showed nerves of steel with that last kick, though that one single kick doesn't erase all the past errors that have cost us. He won't make it as a pro rugby player IMO (unless Nige gives him a contract at Glaws!) because the competition for the Wales 10 jersey is too great. I don't see many U20 regional games but I refuse to believe Sam Davies has been one of the best U20 fly-halves for the past 2 years.

You don't have to play for Wales to be a pro player
At the moment, he will struggle
But if he becomes a strong defensive 10 then a lot of teams will fancy a 10 with a boot and won't mind if he isn't a big gainline/creative threat - just look at Dan Parks
He is young, and has a chance if he improves his game.

But 606, he isn't like Dan Parks, he doesn't have the consistency with the boot. And no Region in Wales will play to a style so suit him. So just who do you think he can displace at the 4 Welsh teams?

He is 19
Apart from Biggar and Patchell, there haven't been many flyhalves who were good enough at 19!
Certainly too soon to rule him out, although his future may not be at the Welsh regions for now (other than maybe the Dragons)

Re: Wales U20s vs South Africa U20s
This is U20 rugby though where a lot of 19 year old players compete and he is hardly good enough at this level. It's funny how one kick can make people change their minds suddenly. No doubt he deserves credit for nailing it but to think he is now going to become good after everything we've seen is ridiculous.
Dragons , I'd be very annoyed if he ended up there. We have a few 10's that are good enough to keep him out of the squad, not only because they're better but they can cover different positions. Besides that we'll probably churn out another fly-half in a couple years. A bit like we've had to churn out a replacement 6, and a replacement 8 (because Toby is departing after his final year).

1 kick?
I was referring to his MOTM performance against Argentina and his excellent kicking game against SA which kept Wales in the SA half - him and Williams won the aerial battle convincingly.
I was very unimpressed with Davies in the 6Ns, and he certainly still has a lot of problems with his game - but I was wrong in thinking of him as a liability, he has been vital for this Wales team even with limited abilities - he has executed incredibly well and that is vital if he wants to become a pro player.
The Dragons don't really have any FHs who are proven under pressure, and none who really control a game. Davies has the POTENTIAL to be better than the Dragons FH options.

Re: Wales U20s vs South Africa U20s
Yes 1 kick, the final one against SA u20. Are you sure he was MOTM? I don't think he kicked 100% in that game and he was still unspectacular in attack and poor in defence. Rhodri Williams though is a revelation and if he was not MOTM in that game then he should have been. IMO SD hasn't done enough to no longer be considered a liability.
Utterly ridiculous. There is a point in there somewhere, with regards to the Dragons FH players being in pressure games. Though every professional game is a pressure game and they've been playing there for a while. Claiming Davies has the potential to be better after watching him for 2 years on the U20 arena isn't even laughable, it's insulting. Bit of a moment there.

The novelty award then. It's quite clear, seeing as Wilson has been going out of way to try and single him out for praise in a couple of games; while all this time Bennet, Jones, Jenkins, both the Williams', Dixon and Hughes have been playing a lot better.

Novelty for playing a crucial part in the 5pt win over Argentina which was effectively a knock out game
Go slag off 19yr olds somewhere else
Just because he isn't Barry John doesn't make him a bad player at 19!

My opinion of the fly-half has always been the same though , it's constructive criticism and it's not against the rules. I've explained my reasoning on every occasion though you seem to have overlooked it. How anyone can forget all the flaws after one kick is ludicrous. I'm not one of those supporters with a short-term memory and that is why I brought this back up.
BTW, Wales were excellent at the breakdown against Argentina. Give some credit to the forwards and coaches we've been blessed with at the past two tournaments.

I have said that there are flaws in his game, have you not been paying attention?
Players DEVELOP at U20 level
In the last 2 games, Sam Davies has been playing very well (I didn't see the earlier JWC games, but apparently he played well then)
Dan Biggar was awful in his first games for Wales, that doesn't mean I wasn't crying for him to start when Preisltand was having a mare.

Re: Wales U20s vs South Africa U20s
Well then it appears we disagree over the potential. There are players in the current squad and players from the last group who all look as if they have great potential. And hardly any of them can break into their teams, though they are very close. I would agree that Davies has played okay in the past two games which were our toughest tests, but they would be his only two good games in the U20s.
Odd bringing Biggar into this and you're right he should have been brought in back then. Though he has played well I think he's just going to be a stop gap for us if Priestland and Patchell play themselves back into contention.
