Haye seemed like he was about to cry to me. Not sure he came across well.

Re: Haye Interview With Links to press Conference and More
No probs chris. You'll note my hiatus lasted all of 5 minutes - was peed off last week but came to the realisation very quickly that this is the only place I get to discuss boxing in any depth!
I felt haye seemed subdued here, confident but not his usual brash self.
The size difference is bigger than you'd think bearing in mind there's supposedly only 3 inches in height between them. I'm not and have never been convinced Haye actually is 6'3", looks closer to 6'1 to me.
How do you see the fight going, and will you be there?

This link was what I watched, seems it may be longer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjmyityrZi4
A few people who have met Haye have said 6 foot 1 is more realistic.

Impossible fight to call for me, difficult to tell how good either really is and think we're either going to see a Wlad points win or a Haye stoppage within 5 rounds. 50/50

I've never seen Haye so nervous. His voice was cracking. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come in terms of how he fights. Haye is someone that relies on his supreme confidence.

I agree Haye looked a little nervous. I *think* and hope it was the magnitude of the press conference and the audience rather than being intimidated by Wlad.
I think he's got Wlad's number

Re: Haye Interview With Links to press Conference and More
Yeah I feel that not enough has been made of this...it is the first time I can ever recall Haye seeming nervous, and as mentioned above, his voice appeared to be cracking somewhat.
I'd like to think it wasn't being intimidated by Wlad, as a) he seems more of a Borat character than a 'looks will kill' reincarnation of Iron Mike, and b) he has never had a problem with acting brash and confident in his presence before. Maybe the reality of it all is now starting to hit him? Or maybe, as you say timebomb, it is the intense media coverage, though he has seemed to lap that kind of thing up in the past.
Anyone else like to give their view on it?

Re: Haye Interview With Links to press Conference and More
Have only seen bits and bobs of this but it is not impossible that now the fight looks like it will actually happen the sheer enormity of what it means is dawning on him. For all his brave words Haye knows as most of us do that Wlad is far from a rubbish fighter and having spent some time at heavy and shared ring time with heavies Haye knows the difference from being in with the cruisers.
Have always felt Wlad will win this one but if Haye's confidence is really going it could be over pretty quickly, but hears hoping not because on paper this has the chance to be competitive and the division needs this.

Re: Haye Interview With Links to press Conference and More
Have to disagree with Haye looking nervous.
He wasn't his usual brash comedic self. He knows this fight needs no hype. I think he either was, or trying to make it look as if he was there out of duty only, and he's only thinking about knocking Wlad's head off.
Haye's team are very much into the psychological side of things. Quite clearly he's distancing himself from everything else and trying to scare and insult Wlad with a fair degree of ferocity in his eyes.

Re: Haye Interview With Links to press Conference and More
I've always found Haye's unshakable confidence to be impressive and at times astounding. The things he says and the way he says them means that he really does lay his pride on the line every time and, barring one lesson in not punching yourself out years back, he has delivered every time. it's his brand of balls out confidence (coupled with his exciting style) that make him a big draw - I mean, when he was ripping Valuev to shreds everyone was hoping either a) I hope he does it, or b) I hope that giant guy teaches him some manners. It made the build up exciting and I heard even casual fans (and girls!) talking about it (even if the fight was actually rubbish). I have to say it's disconcerting to see Haye looking nervous and sulky. However I feel pretty confident that he'll bounce back to usual self at the London press conference.

I think the promotion of the fight will be a bit of a slow burner, ideally Wlad is going to do some PR work in the UK where he's a least better known than Haye is in Germany. I doubt very much that the German's will "get" Haye's style which will lead to them despising him to the max...thus hopefully getting people to buy tickets and tune in to see him beaten.
In that respect, I think Haye will play his part much better than Wlad (cos that's what it's about at this stage, getting bums on seats).

Am I right in thinking there is a London press conference today?
If there is, I think we will see a different Haye in front of a home crowd.
I thought Wlad made Haye look silly with all the twitter stuff!

Re: Haye Interview With Links to press Conference and More
Yeah I can't see how his voice cracking up portrays anything other than extreme nerves. I really, really hope this isn't the case, and would like a good confident showing from him at the London presser today.
Re: Haye Interview With Links to press Conference and More
Not sure I agree with Wlad making him look silly Hobo, Haye just wasn't getting involved with the 'friendly' chat of Wlad. Would have been funnier if Haye had just completely blanked him though, to see Wlad's reaction.
Re: Haye Interview With Links to press Conference and More
I thought you sounded rather akward to be honest with that. He showed Haye up a bit by acting respectful though, Haye looked a bit childish when he wouldn't shake his hand IMO.Hobo wrote:I thought Wlad made Haye look silly with all the twitter stuff!

Let's not forget that Ali had what appeared to be a total meltdown during the weigh in and doctor's exam prior to the first Liston fight.

This is the thing that I find all a bit distasteful about all of Haye's antics. Appreciate it is playing the pantomime villain and will sell the fight and that is ultimately his aim, but Wlad is a really nice guy. Whenever I have seen him on things such as Ringside he has come across as intelligent, articulate and a genuine role model. Must be getting old and soft in my old age but constantly slagging such a guy off is starting to leave me a little cold.

Agree wholeheartedly.
I like Wlad as a person and think he is a very good fighter. I of course want Haye to win but if he doesnt, I hope he gets knocked out by Wlad in no uncertain terms for all of his badmouthing and disrespect.
Re: Haye Interview With Links to press Conference and More
Personally i'm not too bothered about pressers
Remember everyone saying how Hatton had psyched out you know who etc, and remember how that one turned out.
To me Haye didn't seem nervous, and i'm not prepared to read massively into a little stutter here and there etc etc etc.
For me Haye has well and truly got under Wlad's skin in the last 2 years if anything

I thought Wlad's Twitter nonsense was cringeworthy. Far from showing Haye up I thought he showed himself to be a humourless robot.

Last time I saw Wlad on Ringside I was struck by how much his nice guy image appeared manufactured. To me it appeared as though he'd rec'd PR training which was evidenced by his insistance on making sure he was speaking into the right camera at critical moments.rowley wrote:This is the thing that I find all a bit distasteful about all of Haye's antics. His good guy act is no more genuine that Haye's bad guy act.

Haye doesn't have to go overboard though. Wlad has his nice guy image to protect and whether Haye throws a few carefully aimed insults or goes into emotional meltdown, Wlad will remain placid. If that happens, Haye's the one looking foolish and, given he has a PPV to sell, he's unlikely to alienate his paying audience!
Once the PPV's have been bought and they get the advanced figures through, I think you'll see it heat up a bit more.

Re: Haye Interview With Links to press Conference and More
I don't think it's a lack of confidence from haye, more of a steely determination than the usual brash arrogance. He knows this is it, he needs to be focused - not clowning around so it's good to see him seeming like he means business. I did hear he'd been having trouble with his missus, not sure if that may affect his mood. Also I understand he's been training for weeks in Miami, with the fight still 2 months away I hope he doesn't overtrain.

Don't agree with this "over training" lark
They man is a professional, surrounded by paid professional and advisors to ensure he's in the best possible condition. Looking at him already, he's well conditioned and I believe his next few months will be spent refining his game plan rather than getting into shape for the fight.
This was Hatton's problem. Too long spent getting the weight off rather than polishing the tools of the trade

I know what you're saying dave, and I don't see it as a valid excuse for losing a fight as even if you 'overtrain' you will still be in tip top condition, but there is an arguement for peaking too early in training and then not being the best you can possibly be come fight night. Plenty of fighters refer to it so I'm sure it's not a made up phenomenon. I know myself from doing long distance runs and triathlons in the past that you have to carefully stagger your training upwards and taper it off at the right rate to get the best out of yourself, no doubt the same applies in boxing where you are also training for a specific event rather than a continual season of events such as footy.

Yeah he was speaking on Ringside a few months back about always being in fighting shape ala Khan. He naturally into healthy eating/fitness so its just the timing, fine tuning which he needs to work on for his fights.

Interesting to see Haye calling him a fraud......
I mean if he wins then I'd have thought he'd want admiration for his win........People can just turn round and say well you said he was a fraud....
Be insulting by all means but appreciate the challenge then you can get full value and credit for the win.

Press conference on Sky sports news at 1:30.
Thin Haye will be more himself today he was either nervous or wanted to come across like he never cared for the German audience at all. Either way he should have shaken Wlads hand. He might not like him but should have respec for him.

To say the K Boys are supposedly very good chess players, Wlad seems to lack some tactical nous.
No point looking like an idiot now and then having to spend the rest of the promotional tour repairing your damaged reputation just to try and score points. Sacrifice a few of those pawns, maybe lose some early ground and then come on strong later.
Or, here's a novel idea for the pair of them. Just go round telling people that as two of the very best HW in the World right now, they will be fighting each other on July 2nd 2011 and people would be advised to tune in as it's sure to be a fabulous match up!

To be fair Groves does have ginger hair. Not sure about his breath maybe he had eaten something strong that day like garlic. My favourite DeGold one was his one about Ugly kids tie on ringside.
