Root is too fidgety to be facing new ball.
He might get by in the subcontinent.....but not in England, SA or NZ
That ball from siddle was full...swung a little away but was made to look much better than it was...always is the case when a RHB is clean bowled of an away swinger

Dunno about that , KP_f ...was a darn good ball. Full and quick , and a little movement.
He had played quite soundly until then , made thirty...way too early to be writing him off as an opener. Call me after the next two or three Tests...

KP dropped on 1?! Bit harsh KPF! Very hard chance for Haddin.
At least KP knows where his off stump is.

So the Aussies are going down the complete desperation route with the selection Agar over Lyon.

I was pretty happy with the start until Root went , Azzy.
Given the conditions , the prelunch session was always going to be challenging...one down at lunch would have been excellent.
That said , it is indeed important for KP to get settled now. If he can , there might be a few runs on offer later in the day : this Aussie attack looks quite dangerous at times , but also a bit inclined to spray the ball around...

I said before...I say again......when a RHB is clean bowled of an away swinging delivery...is a spectacular view...often made to look better than it was.
Root wasn't steady on the crease....shuffled away.......and then tried to move back in the line onf the ball....feet got a bit stuck trying to change the direction...ended up playing insdie the line of the ball.
Fidgety Technical imperfection made for a great looking dismissal

So 98/2 at lunch.
Fairly even. Marginal edge to England , IMHO.

Re: Ashes: First Test
I expect him to ave over 50 in this series KP.
however if he ave 42 or above that is good for a first test series as an opener. that isnt even low expectations.. that is pretty high in fairness

Re: Ashes: First Test
2 wickets makes it in favour of Aus
RR of nearly 4 makes it tilt in Eng's favour
overall even....I would say at thi point.
from Aus POV they need to choke runs down a bit.
from england's POV.......one of these two out there should go on to hit a 150+

compo is 30 and limited.
root is in this side and staying in this side. he will not have to average more than 35 to stay in. He will get the chance for at least a year ..

Re: Ashes: First Test
England will be the happier of the two teams given that the ball was doing a little.
KP and Trott look in good touch. Root looked (at the risk of agreeing with KPF) a little edgy and nervous which is understandable.
Australia bowled OK but a few too many loose deliveries. Pattinson looks their main threat, although Starc was unlucky not to pick up a wicket also. Agar looks a spinner in the Bruce Martin vein - he'll do a job but can't see him causing too many headaches. Still, it's a bold move from Aus. Glad to see Smith in the side.
First hour after lunch crucial as always. If Trott and KP get going then England can look to build a big score; if either gets out early (and the ball is still doing a bit) then England's recently fragile middle-order will have work to do.

Re: Ashes: First Test
Good toss to win for England. Yes there was quite a bit of early swing about in overcast conditions, but the pitch already has a few cracks, and I'm sure Swann will be rubbing his hands in glee in prospect at bowling last on this pitch. 350 should be the minimum aim for England here.
Decent morning for England. Cook will be annoyed with himself, he got through the testing first half-hour, only to play a loose drive at a wide one. Root was going along fine until he got a beauty of a yorker from Siddle. Trott's looking very comfortable, he's playing his shots, and already has put the Aussies on the back foot. Him and KP are probably a perfect partnership for the afternoon.
Australia have looked a bit edgy in the field and with the ball. I'm quite surprised they went for Agar, in truth. Did anyone expect that?
Keep it up England!

Are you talking about Compos grandad- that played for arsernal footy and england cricket or albertrott that played for aus and england cricket!(who was supposedly a distant relative of trotty and commited suicide at a young age (RIP) )

I was talking about Albert Trott. Trott's dad is convinced they are related, I'll take his word. Didnt know he committed suicide. All I knew is that he once hit a huge six at Lords, and that he has an Ashes average of 102

Been listening this morning. Seems Aussies dangerous bowling has done the damage.
Did sound like an odd morning to put yourself in. Under cloud at Trent Bridge. Right or wrong decision?

Silly shot from Pietersen. A very loose drive, similar to Cook's dismissal. Not what England needed.
