Re: US Open - Matches
Absolutely. He's so streaky it's scarcely believable. I suppose he reminds me of Petra Kvitova a bit in that when they hit a purple patch during the match they can't be stopped until they chuck in a game filled with UEs.ryan86 wrote:There's times you can watch Evans play and be convinced that if he could really get high in the rankings and then there's other times you watch him and you wonder "How did he beat....?",The Special Juan wrote:Is it too much to suggest Evo's slice is in the top 20 on tour?

Re: US Open - Matches
One thing you have to say about Evans is his technique is sound. It's his shot choice that keys him down at times. Goes for it from really low percentage positions.
His slice and his body serve are working so well I just wish he'd play them more often. If you put his shots into a better tactician you'd have a top 50/60 player.
The positive is that side of the game can be learned.

I think this third set is key. Whoever wins it wins the match for me. Evans must hold here.

Ryan - I didn't see the Vancouver final. I've only ever seen Dan play in Davis cup and queens before this week.
Been really impressed though. This is a tight match... And it's between a guy who was ranked in the mid 200's not long ago and a slam quarter finalist... And you can't tell the difference!

Boy has this guy got talent...just shows you how much he's been wasting it all these years! One of the best volleyers on tour to boot, a real all court player.

Re: US Open - Matches
Some fabulous play from Evans - playing really aggressive and now he just needs to keep his game solid and I think he will win this. Win or lose this match though it is all about the coming few weeks and months after this tournament where he needs to replicate this form on the bread and butter of challenger matches in a bid to break the top 100.
Roger through safely in just over an hour and a half and joined by David Ferrer.

Brilliant Dan... And has anyone EVER called a trainer out for joggers nipple before?!

However, he's not used to 5 set formats at all so this will be a real test for him now, mentally and physically. Even if he goes on to lose now he's done himself proud.

He's a great serve for a guy 5'9 tall...a real powerhouse of a delivery.

I saw him clock 132MPH earlier. It's reminiscent of Verdasco who's not the tallest ("only" 6 ft 2) but can hit 140MPH and above.lydian wrote:He's a great serve for a guy 5'9 tall...a real powerhouse of a delivery.

Re: US Open - Matches
Just one more break and he could crack Tomic. Remember the big Aussie had a marathon first round match so he will be feeling fatigued as well.

He called the trainer out at the change over, nobody could see why, and then got something off the trainer, took his top off and proceeded to tape both his nipples!! That was it!!!The Special Juan wrote:Was it an official injury time-out? I'm finding that far too funny.Danny_1982 wrote:Brilliant Dan... I don't want to jinx Dan but should he win he will play the winner of the Dancevic/Robredo match...as I type that Evans holds.

Re: US Open - Matches
Tomic and Nishikori are the perfect opponents for Evans, they like to get the ball in court and don't like to dominate rallies. Evans has been very good and I think playing in the davis cup has done him the world of good

4-1!!! Woo-woo-woo!
Get the double break to make it easier
Hard to imagine Evans going back to playing AEGON GB Pro Series events again after this spell in North America, the last 3-4 weeks have changed his life for sure.

Tomic is down, so make him play.
Don't give him an easy service game.

Quite possibly LS, he got top drawer ball striking and volleying ability, times the ball really sweetly.

Re: US Open - Matches
He'd take Robredo I think as he and Nishikori are very similar players but then again Dancevic is the qualifier... I'll concentrate on his potential opponent if/when he wins!!

Re: US Open - Matches
Disagree TofC...Tomic doesn't handle slice well, it's a fast lowish bouncing court...and hasn't done him much harm in the match...so far.

And Dan Evans wins beating Bernard Tomic 1-6 6-3 7-6 6-3 to seal a place in the Third Round of the US Open where he will play either Frank Dancevic or Tommy Robredo. Fabulous performance from Dan. I wonder who the last British man to reach the Third Round of the slam was other than Murray? Surely, Tim Henman?
