No he held his nerve and took the set 6-3. Raonic (who is in this quarter) I feel has a very good chance of reaching his first slam semi.[/quote]The Special Juan wrote:He served for the first too. If Tipsy can continue CC but I doubt it, Ferrer's got a load of points to defend here and I think he'll make the semis. It is a very easy quarter for him, even though he might not be at full fitness.

Re: US Open - Matches
So if Evans had taken those set points against Robredo and gone on to win the match, would he be taking it to Federer, like Tommy is? Or would he have been a deer in the headlights against one of his idols?

Teaser: Federer has a 7-1 record on Armstrong. Who was his only loss to and in what year?

I am not sure Tipsy will beat Ferrer but it looks like Ferrer will play Raonic. That won't be easy especially if he endures a marathon match today. The Special Juan wrote:If Tipsy can continue CC but I doubt it, Ferrer's got a load of points to defend here and I think he'll make the semis. Yeah I think they'll play each other too. Gasquet can't buy a 4th round major victory and is already a break down.

And Tipsy breaks Ferrer's serve early in the third set to lead 6-7 6-3 2-1.

Federer noticably slower getting to shots this evening. This set is a battle of belief. Does Robredo believe he can beat Roger and does Federer still believe he can dig himself out of holes in slam matches that aren't going his way?

Hmmmm...The Special Juan wrote:Teaser: Federer has a 7-1 record on Armstrong. Who was his only loss to and in what year?
Well, he won between 2004 and 2008, so those years are all out. 2009 he lost in the final to Del Potro so that would definitely have been on Ashe. 2010 and 2011 he lost to Djokovic in, I think, the semi-finals, and I can't imagine they wouldn't have been on Ashe either.
Soooo... maybe Berdych in the QF last year? Was their match on Armstrong... I can't remember...
If not, then I'll go back to 2003 when I think Nalbandian beat him in the... fourth round? Or was it quarters?
Can't remember any further back than that.

Re: US Open - Matches
Tipsy consolidate his break of serve to hold and leads 3-1 in the third set. Quite a turnaround for Tipsy where he couldn't buy a win in matches for love nor money and here if he wins he'll be in a slam quarter-final.

A shocker of a service game there from Federer and Robredo breaks to love to lead 5-3.

Feed about to be served with a 2 sets to nothing.
This is just a joke, or is he doing this on purpose not to meet Nadal?

Re: US Open - Matches
I guess Fed doesn't like the prospect of Facing Rafa in the QF and hence looks more like tanking the match, too many errors from both players, Tipys - Ferrer match is of bigger value than this one.
I still expect this match to go 5 sets and Fed to lose in 5 sets, so that people won't question him.
Fed to win 3 and 4th and lose in 5, well just a speculation.

But he keeps volleying towards Robredo for no reason, 5-6 same point, he's got a clear field and he keeps punching the ball towards Tommy for no reason. Silly really.
And now 2 sets down. Go shopping Fed, take kids on Central park.

Robredo has played the break points really well all set. 2 sets to 0.

Re: US Open - Matches
Federer with two break back points but Robredo digs deep and hits a couple of lovely passing winners and seals the second set to lead Federer 7-6 6-3. Is there anyway back now?

Ferrer break back to level the third set at 3-3 but Tipsy breaks again to lead 4-3. Now around two and a quarter hours of play there - a real marathon and lots of games going to deuce.

as much as this is painful to watch, I would rather he lost now than have to sit through a demolition to Nadal

Well the way to look at it is if he isn't in the form to beat Robredo then he certainly isn't to win against Rafa but he is playing for crucial ranking points.CAS wrote:as much as this is painful to watch, I would rather he lost now than have to sit through a demolition to Nadal

the amount times Federer changes his mind just before he comes in is too high, he is showing Robredo he is nervous and isn't fully committed to the tactic

Raonic takes the first set on a tie-break whilst Federer cannot take a break point for love not money.

That game sums up why Roger is plummeting down the rankings. He had a feast of break points and couldn't take one.

Don't understand his mental state. He's playing like he's defending the title, cautious, now aggression, kind of scared loosing his No:1 raking etc, which is not the case. Can't he just free his mind and keep punching balls creatively?
Not many expect him to win another GS, so why not free himself and have fun as he states it so often?

Fed's done it all. What does he have, other than his love of the game and competitiveness, to play for? He's lost the drive

To hit the kind of shots we all know he can you need confidence and unflappable belief and that has waned for Roger as a result of mounting defeats against players he used to eat for breakfast.Jahu wrote:Don't understand his mental state. Another shocker of a service game and Robredo breaks to love. Roger looks lost. It is the pressure situations that he is now flawed in where he used to be flawless. Robredo on his way to the quarters to probably face Nadal.

Exactly. He still wants to win, but he doesn't want to win. A tiny drop in focus and determination is all it takes.ChequeredJersey wrote:Fed's done it all. What does he have, other than his love of the game and competitiveness, to play for? He's lost the drive

Fed should of quit after Olympics last year. I've said it many time tha any one that believes he's playing because hes having fun (loosing) and not because he's got to honor long time contracts and endorsements (for money), is plain silly.

Hi all. How is everyone?
Looking grim for the Fed - and he looked so good in previous rounds. To be fair to his opponent though, Robredo has played an absolutely brilliant match, particularly tactically. He's got a good tennis brain.

Federer was very poor being honest but credit to Robredo - he never choked and maintained a high standard to reach the quarters.

There is no construction to Federer's points, he is just like a kid who has just learnt how to play and is just trying to smack winners. Maybe he didn't want to run? I have never seen him sweat like that at all

Just incredibly frustrating.. fair enough Robredo played very smart, I thought Fed had a lot of trouble picking apart his second serve but all the same there was no way that he outplayed Fed like Stak did.

Fack me. Robredo of all people? A player Fed would crush on any court at his prime. That's shocking. And in straight sets too.
