Murray in control now, good second set against Mayer

Re: US Open - Matches
Murray playing a canny game. Not attempting to paint the lines, not hitting with any depth but working Mayer around and manufacturing errors from Mayer - different from his first match against Llodra. Murray leads 7-5 6-1.

Re: US Open - Matches
Murray "does a Djokovic" and chucks in a pretty poor service game out of nowhere to gift a break. Nothing overly worrying though, I'm sure Murray will claw it back.

Yes sloppy and all of his own making - dangling a carrot to a beaten opponent. No need for it. By the way Murray will play Florian Mayer in the Third Round should he win here.

I'd expect Murray to win that one fairly easy. If Murray can beat you on clay, he's going to beat you on every other surface too.

Re: US Open - Matches
Mayer takes the set 6-3. Fair play to him for raising his levels and Murray gets bitten for dangling him a carrot. This match now could go close to three hours (or lobger) not what Andy needs or wants.

Mayer's made Djokovic look a reasonably competent volleyer at times

I am surprised Andy hasn't used the slice a lot more tonight. Andy hits a sizzling cross court pass on the run - great shot. Mayer coughing up errors again.

It was pretty ominous towards the end of that 3rd set. Ok Mayer won it but he did well in his last two service games to stave off the break points and then serve it out. The better player on the day is going to win this match.

Murray in a rich vein of form now playing some cracking shots. At least he got a test. Murray wins in four sets.

Delpo never cruises through his matches, if you look at Novak, Rafa, Andy and Roger how often do you see them crush their early opponents and are back in the shower in a under 2 hours? Delpo even in early rounds has much closer scorelines, it must get tiresome

Hewitt breaks for 2:1. He must love tennis and/or competition to be able to get himself pumped for these small-time matches after all he was able to accomplish when he was young.

WTF Hewitt always on Del Po's draw, while its great to see Hewitt cast some of his magics, its not fun from a Del Po's fan view, it sucks, Hewitt always has answers for Del Po's big groundies.
Come on Del Po do something, Vamous Del Po.

A double break up - 4:1. He just needs to hold twice out of his next three service games. Delpo looks spent.

Del Po is very unlucky to draw Fed or Hewitt early on most of his grandslams , its more pathetic when Hewitt comes from no where and ends the slam hope in 2nd round.summerblues wrote:A double break up - 4:1. He just needs to hold twice out of his next three service games. Delpo looks spent.

In fairness, this one would have been (or will be) hard anyway - Delpo has a horrible draw - Nole then Andy then Rafa.invisiblecoolers wrote:Poor Del Po, seems like another grandslam chances gone early

5:1. Surely over now?
If Tomic had only one quarter of his heart, grit and determination, he would easily be four times better than he is now.

Re: US Open - Matches
I don't mind losing him losing in QF n SF after a fight like in Wimbledon against top dogs, but drawing Hewitt a lot of times in 2nd round is tad unlucky, Hewitt has answers for Del Po's game, its great to see a veteran legend like him bring back the old school magic but I don't want that happen against Del Po every time, just draw him on the other side from here on please.summerblues wrote:In fairness, this one would have been (or will be) hard anyway - Delpo has a horrible draw - Nole then Andy then Rafa.invisiblecoolers wrote:Poor Del Po, seems like another grandslam chances gone early

What a return to set up the match point again, great performance Hewitt, and if some body say he was paper champion shame on the haters.
Great match and very unlucky Del Po to draw Hewitt so early again in a slam.

I actually normally prefer Delpo to Hewitt but could not help rooting for Hewitt here. Very impressive display. He was serving for a two set lead at one point, after he lost the second and then third, I thought he was a goner. Turning it around after that was really something.

Hewitt was actually very good; just had bad luck with injuries, plus it may have been a bit disheartening playing while Fed was at his best.invisiblecoolers wrote:Hewitt, and if some body say he was paper champion shame on the haters.

How many countless occasions he has troubled the current champions? on his off off peak career against the peak of the champions , I hope Hewitt makes the QF, I wanna see him bring this game and then I will laugh for the rest of the week.summerblues wrote:Hewitt was actually very good; just had bad luck with injuries, plus it may have been a bit disheartening playing while Fed was at his best.invisiblecoolers wrote:Hewitt, and if some body say he was paper champion shame on the haters.
I always loved Hewitt's game, it just it happens to be against Del Po most times recently sucks, I hope Del Po doesn't draw him any more till he retires:hug:

Re: US Open - Matches
I think he has outside chance to get to the QF, but if he does, Nole will destroy him there.
With Delpo's meek departure, Nole's quarter does not look so tough anymore. At this point, I would say Andy's remaining draw is the toughest.

Re: US Open - Matches
I am going to the USO on Sunday, hoping to catch some good matches - weather permitting.
Haas - Youzhny and Wawrinka - Baghdatis could be good. Berdych, Hewitt also in action. Also likely one of Andy and Nole (the other one will likely be in the night session).
Granollers is - I understand - highly regarded on these boards (), so maybe I will take a peek at him too.
And if I am really lucky, Fed's night match tomorrow will be rained out in which case he will also be in action on Sunday

To be honest it is not a massive surprise that Hewitt beat Del Potto. In the First Round Juan looked shaky and endured a four hour long match and if you display that same weakness against Hewitt he will take advantage.

Re: US Open - Matches
I wouldn't read too much into this one although it is a great win for Hewitt. I thought DelPo was coming into this tournament fully fit (for a change ) but it turns out he has a left wrist problem which was apparently hindering his backhand quite a lot. However, I didn't see the match so maybe Hewitt just outplayed him completely.

Del Potro did look out of sorts in the First Round. I never saw the match last night but if Juan continued in that vein then a defeat is no surprise.

Ferrer takes the first set 6-4 against the Kazakhstan qualifier Kukushkin. Going with serve in the second set. I will say it again Ferrer's quarter is open in my opinion for someone to gatecrash the semis.

Ferrer takes the second set and leads 6-4 6-3. He looks home and hosed and will play either Jack Sock or Janko Tipsarevic in the Fourth Round.

Kukushkin pulls a set back against Ferrer. A gutsy display this from the qualifier ranked 172 in the world. Like Murray last night - a set Ferrer wouldn't have wanted to play.

Kukushkin refuses to go away against Ferrer. He was trailing 4-1 in the fourth set he has hauled it back to 4-4 and on serve.

Meanwhile, Deliciano Lopez took the first set on a tie-break but trails Raonic 3-1 in the second set.
As I type Ferrer breaks serve and will serve for the match at 5-4.

Ferrer saves a break point on his serve before going on to win 6-4 6-3 4-6 6-4 in a match lasting just under three hours. Credit to Kukushkin for putting up a great fight considering his ranking. An entertaining match that.

Re: US Open - Matches
Have to say I was pretty amazed when I caught the scoreline for this match first thing this morning. Wouldn't have put more than a dollar on Hewitt taking out Delpo, but if the wrist trouble is back again then I guess that puts a very different perspective on things and would in part explain his struggle in R1 and then another poor performance last night. But all credit to Hewitt for capitalising on his opportunities. The Special Juan wrote:I wouldn't read too much into this one although it is a great win for Hewitt. I do feel concerned for Delpo and the way he seems unable to push on with any real conviction since his 'comeback'. Some people were taking the view that he might never again find the form that brought him his USO title and with it a chance to challenge the traditional elite on a consistent basis. His Wimbledon tussle with Djoko was for me the match of the tournament but right now there seems very little prospect of him producing that sort of quality over seven rounds.
I'd like to think he won't end his career as a one-Slam man (though no shame in that) but the years are slipping by. .........
