Depends on how you play and who the midfielders are Viva.

Probably going to accept my lawyers offers for Jon Aurtenetxe and Kike Sola if anyone wants them?

I agree you need balance in midfield and your midfielders need to be able to defend but if I have a midfielder who's not classed as a DM I will get marked down. Dedicated DM is someone who sits in front of back 4 breaking play up job is to defend and not get forward.

So Carrick? Thats basically his job but I reckon if I listed Carrick as a DM in tacticts id hes marked down. Heck I get marked down for building a team around Taarabt, apparently I need Joey Barton in central midfield & Steven Gerrard is going to get found out playing in midfield. Laugh I actually dont get this league anymore.
The whole 442 thing is absolute BS.

Much easier when Gio was making unbiased opinions on results, no favoritism towards a manager or players & no one questioned him, debated or argued.

Every team needs a defensive-minded midfielder, I don't want to say DM because that implies someone who goes flying in with tackles. If you have a deep-lying playmaker, like Carrick/Alonso/Pirlo with a box to box alongside that's the perfect combo for me.

agree with this.

Bad example perhaps, but on Fifa I have Verratti in my DM role and he's the world's smallest man.

There seems to be the belief that the DM has to be big, physical, and an enforcer.

I dont think so. Carrick, Xavi, Pirlo all play that DM, Holding, Deep lying play maker role superbly. Verratti is also growing in the role. Personally I think they have to have a high level of passing & tekkers as the latter is what gives them the ability to find/make space & gain time on the ball to get out of situation & control a match. Also vision, reading of the game & interception are vital to the defensive side/off the ball side of the role.

I disagree. Carrick/Xavi/Pirlo aren't holding midfielders. Hero's got it right with Xavi and Capoue in his team. Xavi has Busquets IRL, Pirlo has Vidal and Carrick now has Fellaini.

You need one to break up play, one playmaker and one box to box if you played three CM's, why does that change if you only play two? I personally think two box to box players works better than one box to box and one DLP as the likes of Carrick/Xavi/Pirlo don't track runs from midfield and don't get stuck in defensively like a box to box player/out and out DM would.

Vidal is venturing forward more so far this season but Pogba is lining up along side him & Pirlo so I see what you mean. Busquets get stick for being a filthy bizatch but he is good at what he does and vital for Xavi/Iniesta play.

Now the thing is, how do you separate the DM & Holding roles? All of them sit at the back of midfield, break up play & dictate it going forward, all are central hubs for their teams. So whats the difference between DM & Holding?

It does vary.

United won the league last season with Carrick + 1, none of them a true DM

I don't think Busquet's play is dirty. I think HE is a Tinkywinky. He is such a little bitch. He fouls others but then if they breathe on him he's on the floor like a pig rolling in crap.

I don't really know how to rate Busquets. My gut feeling is that in a weaker team, he'd be about as useful as an unpotty-trained labradoodle. He's good at what he does for Barca and Spain but give me Javi Martinez over him every day of the week.

Martinez is an excellent player. Watching the Chelsea game on Friday, I had to wonder why Phillip Lahm, one of the best full backs in the game, was at DM and Martinez was sat out?

I know Guardiola is this tactical genius but that seemed odd.

Makes sense, I was watching the game with the sound off in a pub so I didn't hear any explanations.

I just had to walk out of my way to avoid one of those charity people. It's a hot day, they should be more considerate.

Easy, and in this case it was on ITV so it would have been Andy Townsend. If the commentary had been on, I would have probably asked them to mute it.

He's a proven goal scorer and he's available, if I don't get above 10m he goes to lawyers as I don't have a striker for the game this week, I don't wish to sell but I don't have much of an alternative.
