Would a Celtic League work? Empty Would a Celtic League work?

Post by westisbest Tue 01 Oct 2013, 5:23 pm

On the back of some people not happy with the welsh sides in the prem or the scottish sides joing, got me thinking a bout having a celtic league(just like they do in rugby).

Teams

Scotland: celtic, rangers, hearts, hibs, motherwell, kilmarnock, d utd, ross county, aberdeen inverness

Wales: seansea, cardiff, wrexham, newport.

ROI
shamrock rovers, derry city, cork city, st pats.

NI
cliftonville, glentoran, linfield, portadown.

22 teams.

winners qualify for champions league automatically, next 3 in qualifiers.

4 to gown down, back to their respective leagues, winners from the 4 leagues come up.

Cardiff could play home games at the MS against the old firm(if possible).

OK so there may be an issue with smaller non scottish clubs when the old firm have to travel, in terms of capacity.

Now this may not work and seem like a stupid idea, but i'm just winding the clock down before i go home.

I am that bored:laugh:

Who is not happy about cardiff and swansea being in the PL?

If a celtic league happened (good idea in a way) wales wouldn't be included, well not swansea and cardiff anyway- maybe the other clubs

Lumbering Jack has an issue with the welsh clubs in the prem.

If was ever going to work, would need Swansea & Cardiff.

Plus Champagne Socialist thinks that Cardiff and Swansea and Welsh football in general would benefit from playing Bangor, TNS and Port Talbot as opposed to Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea every week

I don't think they would need those two, it would just add to the strength and draw of the SPL..In Fact it could be a very good way of saving it.

Lumbering jack is in a massive minority. Do you know anyone else(IRL) that has an issue?

I personally would want my team Cardiff and to have nothing to do with it

The Premiership is in the top 3 most lucrative leagues in world. We would be silly to leave this

And while we do get a bit of stick off English bigots who believe we shouldnt be there id rather put up with that than the sectarian nonsense that a Celtic League would bring

the welsh league will never amount to anything due to its 3 biggest teams playing for english leagues. Not a hard concept to grasp. The Welsh LEAGUE is negatively affected by its best teams not playing in the welsh LEAGUE.

NOt sure socialist. Wales is very much a rugby nation..

If the teams weren't in the prem they wouldn't attract any players at all, and the whole league would still lose the best welsh players to the english system anyway

To cut a long story short...the best Welsh players need to be playing in England or for Welsh clubs against English clubs. Its not hard to work out really and only Champagne Socialist seems to think that young Welshman like Aaron Ramsey, Jonathan Williams and Joe Allan would be better playing against semi-profesional players who never made it to the top as opposed to the best players in the world every week

You keep mis quoting me. Not once have I taled about Welsh teams or Welsh players or the welsh national team, that is a different debate.

What I am saying is that the Welsh LEAGUE.....LEAGUE........LEAGUE........LEAGUE has suffered by not having it's biggest teams represent it.

The problem is we will never know because the biggest welsh teams have been playing in england for 100 years. The welsh league has never had a chance to grow because its biggest teams with the biggest fan base is playing in english leagues.

Wales are very lucky at the moment if you think about it socialist.

they have 10% of the prem teams, that is more teams per capita than us english!!

football isn't even there no.1 sport. (a rarity in europe)

Basically its like georgia getting teams in the french rugby union league!

It was just a thought(like i said maybe not a good one).

Obviously Swansea & Cardiff would be playing lesser opposition then they do now(old firm aside).

Would be interesting to see how they got on.

Now the Irish teams(north &south) would struggle, but playing celtic would bring in large support, obviously a lot of irish fans follow celtic.

Would like to think they would improve over time, bit like Italy for example in. the 6 nations.

A better chance of european football with europa league, Cardiff & swansea.

Hell, look this would never happen(although i wouldn't mind seeing it).

Just something to throw out there.

westisbest - its all well and good talking up the idea. but you cant just allocate your own european spots as you think is fair to make it sound like a decent deal

Any new league would start back at the bottom in uefa's coefficient

It would probably be an SPL shake up anyway and they would keep the scottish cosfficient

TBH i think its a good idea - but for the scottish and irish, not the welsh and english.

I would rather us stay in the SPL than join a Celtic League. I have the Barcelona game on now and we are still doing well at 0-0 even with being a man down. Obviously I would rather us be in the Premiership though but can't really see it ever happening.

Look, I'll not hide my original alleigancies (brought up a Rangers fan)...but if that sending off decision was genuinely correct then I'll wear a Celtic shirt for a day. Call me paranoid but I think it was a lot more sinister than just a refereeing error... Barca are bigger box office than Celtic so clearly it would be more "convenient" if they went through without any problems.
