HC, Pool 2, Round 1: Exeter Chiefs vs Cardiff Blues
I'm no George Carlin when it comes to setting up a new thread, but I thought I'd get one going for the other pool 2 match. It seems to me that both teams have had an indifferent start to the season, yet both seemed to hit their straps in their final game pre round 1, Cardiff Blues with a comfortable home win over Embra, and Exe putting Glaws to the sword at Kingsholm. Now admittedly Edinburgh have been pretty poor oppo this season, but equally Glaws were not on song yesterday, so perhaps we shouldn't read too much into either of these most recent encounters. Cardiff have now welcomed back their B&I Lions group, with strong displays from Jenkins, Warburton, Cuthbert and Halfpenny yesterday. For the Chiefs, DR Rob Baxter was delighted that at last his players delivered a full 80 minute performance, which has sadly been lacking season-to-date. All-in-all, this should lead to a pretty exciting encounter, both teams are an interesting blend of seasoned pros and promising youth (looking forward to the battle in the centres between Corey Allen and Sam Hill, two very exciting prospects) - can't wait to get back down to Sandy Park and soak up the atmosphere for this one

Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 1: Exeter Chiefs vs Cardiff Blues
Trust me, the Chiefs will walk this one, the Blues are a shambles at the moment and Phil Davies has not got a clue, it's a shame because with a decent coach the Blues have the potential to be one of the strongest sides in Europe.

What LD said. I'lll be surprised if we come away with 2 wins from this group. Exeter are too solid a club for us to beat at the moment, especially away from home.

Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 1: Exeter Chiefs vs Cardiff Blues
The nearer that Sunday gets, the less confident I become, as is usually the way I suppose! An interesting piece in the local E&E from the ever-grounded Rob Baxter talking about Cardiff building for this one:
Also in the same paper, a few words from Phil Davies:
Looks like we will be without Sam Hill. Not expecting any of the recently recovered from injury (i.e. Sireli Naqelevuki, Greg Bateman or Romana Graham) to make an appearance.
Baxter says Blues have been building for Sunday's clash
AFTER five tough matches in the Aviva Premiership, Exeter Chiefs open their Heineken Cup campaign at home against Cardiff Blues this Sunday.
And head coach Rob Baxter has warned his players they will face a side that are looking to hit their peak form during the European fortnight.
British & Irish Lions Sam Warburton, Leigh Halfpenny, Alex Cuthbert and Gethin Jenkins all started in last weeknd's win against Edinburgh.
However, none of them played the opening match of the campaign and one of the key quartet has been introduced back every week since.
Baxter knows that means Cardiff will be a very different prospect now compared to the Blues team that started the season.
"One thing we've got to make sure we don't ignore is that everything the RaboDirect sides have done so far is to build for this weekend," said Baxter.
"If you look at the Cardiff team that's been selected over the last five weeks, the internationals and British Lions have slowly been dripped back in to give them the game time that's required to get them ready for this weekend.
"They weren't all up and firing for the first couple of rounds of the RaboDirect, they've been preparing for this weekend and we have to be ready for that. If we think we can roll along with our Premiership form we could be surprised.
"I have to make sure the guys understand that whatever's coming will be noticeably different to what we've seen on video so far."
Exeter and Cardiff find themselves in Pool Two of the Heineken Cup, alongside defending champions Toulon and Glasgow.
The Chiefs travel to Scotland next Sunday before home and away games against lavish-spenders Toulon in December.
Baxter is keen for his players to be in the mix to finish in the top two – and potential knockout European rugby in the spring – when the final two matches come around in January.
"The important thing in any competition is that you stay in the fight for as long as you can," he said.
"It's not always about one fixture, it's about making sure that by the time the last couple of games come around you've still got something to fight for.
"There's a multitude of ways that teams have fought their way through Heineken Cup pools, we've got to make sure we keep ourselves in the fight by getting off to a good start."
With the Chiefs winning so impressively at Gloucester last time out, it would be very easy for Baxter and his fellow coaches to send out the same starting XV against Cardiff.
However, centre Sam Hill suffered a heavy blow to a shoulder, which forced him off during the second half at Kingsholm and is being monitored.
But Baxter has more players returning to full fitness, with summer signing Romana Graham playing his first match on Monday night in the A League, when Grag Bateman continued his return to fitness.
The only senior player not in Exeter's 38-man European squad is injured prop Craig Mitchell, with academy tighthead Lloyd Fairbrother included to provide back-up.
This season's Heineken Cup could be the last, with English and French clubs proposing a new competition next term, with new qualifying criteria.
While that leaves the future of the European competition in doubt, Baxter wants to make the most of it while it lasts.
"I don't think it's for directors of rugby or head coaches to get too involved in the discussions," he said of the negotiations.
"It is what it is at the moment, the qualifying procedure is what it is and you have to be prepared for it.
"We have to enjoy the Heineken Cup for what it is because it is the top competition that's going on in Europe at the moment. It's something we've worked very hard to be part of."
Also in the same paper, a few words from Phil Davies:
Davies expects physical battle
PHIL Davies is expecting a tough battle up front against Exeter Chiefs when he brings his Cardiff Blues side to Sandy Park on Sunday.
The sides meet in the opening clash in Pool Two of this season's top flight European competition.
And having had a few battles against Exeter when he was in charge of Leeds, Davies is expecting more of the same.
"There will be a packed house at Sandy Park and it will be a physical game," he said. "There will be territorial battles and breakdown battles. But we are looking forward to it.
"Exeter are a good club, well run and organised, and that group of players has been together for a long time. The nucleus has been there for a while, there is a stability there and they are a tough team to beat."
Cardiff go into the game on the back of a 29-12 win against RaboDirect Pro12 strugglers Edinburgh last Sunday.
That game saw prop Gethin Jenkins return to action after four months out with a calf injury he picked up on the British & Irish Lions' tour of Australia. Lock Bradley Davies also returned from suspension, with winger Alex Cuthbert scoring two tries and Lions teammate Leigh Halfpenny kicking the rest of his side's points.
Davies hopes that will give them confidence ahead of their foray into Europe.
"We seem to be picking up before Europe, everyone is fit and hopefully we can now go into a massive game with Exeter on the front foot," he said. "We have got to look forward to the next few weeks."

Blues forwards really need to front up this game, and give that backline some quick ball as plenty of talent there

My guess would be someone from Team wales has been whispering in Phil Davies's ear. AP was poor last weekend and copeland came on and did so much more damage with ball in hand, he's our best number 8 and should be starting.Taffineastbourne wrote:How Pretorius starts ahead of Copeland I will never understand.

Also, just seen Ben White is starting for Exeter - be interested to hear how he's been getting on down there as he did ok for the blues when he was here but never really given a chance at the blues.

The Scarlets stepped up their game for the HC, the Ospreys didn't.
If the Blues up their game, they have the players to win this game, if they continue their form so far this season then an away win will be very, very tough.

Allen with a lively start
He plays very flat in defence, Exeter can't risk passes like that with Allen in the 13 channel this week

I really don't understand the current idea to never look for touch
The Blues are just letting Exeter run it back at them, and while it works well for Wales, the Blues don't have anything like the same defensive cohesion and they leave holes all over the park.
For gods sake, put the ball out when clearing from your 22!

Its the speed of the Exeter attack - credit where credit is due. Simply playing too fast and flat for the pinks

That was absolutely shambolic
I seriously can't remember a worse defensive structure than that, it was easy for the Chiefs - the Blues players weren't even watching the ball carrier for the first break!

Really really tempted to turn off now.
This will be an Amlin scoreline.
4 years of absolutely terrible rugby, and I still can't remember a worse 30 minutes of rugby from the Blues.
At least this should see the end of Phil Davies next month. We need Shaun Edwards and a new backs coach desperately.

I may have to eat some words. In the HC discussions I have been using Exeter as an example " why is the 6th english team worth more than the 2nd scots" - well this is some performance. Rugby as it should be played

There was much worse in the past 4 years, a couple games at the RDS for example. The rest is correct though .wales606 wrote:Really really tempted to turn off now.

Stop kicking the f*cking ball!
You are 26pts down and the Chiefs are playing an open game, you won't make anything from kicking the ball away!
Seriously, there must be someone at the club who understands rugby? A cleaner somewhere?

Away in the RDS and at home to Ulster were horrible, but that was over the 80 - perhaps only the HC 1/4 against Leinster comes close for such an awful 30 minutesThe Saint wrote:There was much worse in the past 4 years, a couple games at the RDS for example.
