Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 2: Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs
Can't see beyond Glasgow for this one. Two great wins away from home in the Rabo, steely defense, its a must win game for them. However if Exeter bring the game they showed in the first half this week it will be no walkover. could be the game of the week. Looking forward to it.

Can I confess to being more than a little excited about this one? If we get Exe's first half performance against Glasgow's second half one, then we are in for some spectacle. A number of Chiefs departed with knocks - Tom Johnson, Jason Shoemark, Carl Rimmer, so we'll have to wait and see how they recover before getting a sense of what the team might look like (tu)

So what do Glasgow do with Matowalo? start him at 9? who takes the place kicks?
matowalo reminds me a bit of toonie - capable of unlocking any defence and capable of ridiculous errors. a high risk player

Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 2: Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs
I think its a bit optimistic to expect a similar performance from Exe. They were at home and simply everything clicked until they felt they were in garbage time and let down a bit. And, frankly, I would expect a lot more from Glasgow, especially since Glasgow will be at home. But keeping the same game plan and the same aggression they displayed in the first half should see them through.AsLongAsBut100ofUs wrote:Can I confess to being more than a little excited about this one? Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 2: Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs
We need try bonus points now so I am more relaxed about who is taking kicks as we need Niko at 9 to create opportunities.TJ wrote:So what do Glasgow do with Matowalo? start him at 9? who takes the place kicks?
Jackson can take the easy ones and the Messiah can have a stab at the others. Very difficult to drop Jackson for Weir (who has a high goalkicking percentage) as the Mighty Rhubarb has actually been in good form this season. Not justifiable to play Henners - he's not as Niko-like as Niko and his all round game really isn't as good as Cusiter's.
Asbo will kill me for saying it but our pre-season friendly win against the Chiefs looked fairly comfortable and whilst the teams playing this week will have little resemblance to those pre-season squads (Scott Wight, anyone? Thought not), I contend that it's a good sign. Chiefs had a mind bending first half hour against the Blues but seemed to have a brain fade later so if we can just stop them blasting out of the traps we should be all right.
I will send my Latvian heavies round to Toonie's gaff to have a gentle word if he continues to p!ss about with players out of position. Never seen Swinson look so awkward on a rugby pitch. No need for it. Toonie just needs to decide whom he wants his athletic lock to be - Gray or Kellock. Tom Ryder should hopefully be back in contention for the Munster mash the week after next. Lord, we've missed him.

Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 2: Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs
On the contrary, GC, you'd find me entirely in agreement with you - Exe were poor, and remained so for the opening games of the season. However, things have undoubtedly started to turn around, and I am optimistic that the contest will be far more evenly matched on this occasion. Home advantage will be important without a doubt, and I suspect that selection will be critical for the Warriors (less so for Chiefs, given that the squad is fairly even in strength terms, without any huge 'stars')George Carlin wrote:We need try bonus points now so I am more relaxed about who is taking kicks as we need Niko at 9 to create opportunities.TJ wrote:So what do Glasgow do with Matowalo? start him at 9? who takes the place kicks?

Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 2: Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs
Couldn't quite believe how strong in contact Jonny Gray was against Toulon, Kellock put in a good shift with some big hits too.
So Gray and Kellock in the row with Swinson on the bench.
Harley at blindside, Holmes openside, Fusaro was poor yesterday.
Hope Strauss has recovered, he looked a man possessed in that 2nd half against Toulon.

Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 2: Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs
Agreed, Vince, surely the Swinson experiment at blindside will be abandoned - he didn't do badly there, but he isn't a ginger tackle monster. Equally, I still can't understand why Henry was preferred at 9, unless Toonie was worried that Rhubarb's kicking from tee would go to pieces? But even then, I'd turn to for kicking duties before Pythgagoras? So Harley and Cus back in for me for the Weege, Ascarate in for Dunbar is his knock doesn't clear up, and I'd prefer Lamont over Seymour on the wing, with DTH to start on the other wing - Nico gets to start at scrumhalf, mainly cos he is so difficult to defend against, and if he can keep Exe's backrow tied in (which is essential - they are a v good unit), then gaps will appear

He did, TJ, but I simply think that Lamont's heart is 'catching' for his teammates - I think they have been playing on a similar level, but the leadership of Lamont gets the nod for meTJ wrote:Seymour had a decent game did he not?

Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 2: Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs
As I tried to post via my i phone in my shell shocked and alcohol infused state post match yesterday - DTH VDM is the one of the best wingers in the Rabo. He can play centre too and has for Canada. Should never be out of the Warriors 15. Niko Mata (The Weegie from Fiji) is a genius of a rugby player - flights of fancy allied to moments of madness, along with make it up as you go rugby brilliance. Need him involved in all things so play him at SH - he is not a wing. 1st half thought only Bennett(20), Jackson(24) and Gray(19) were on their A game. 2nd half Niko, DTH, Kellock, Strauss, Seymour joined them. Murray Low looked quite useful in the loose when he replaced Angela. Did we ever miss Big Bad Bob Harley out there ! ? Maitland had his poorest game ever for us but he will recover as he is a consumate professional player. Hogg is our FB so Maits can go to the opposite wing to DTH when Hoggy is fit again.
My team for Sunday:
15 Maitland
14 Seymour
13 Bennett

I would have no problem with that side, possibly Schlong on the bench.

Schiz, bi-focals letting me down again. Possibly Barry at 23?
TJ, if you haven't been to Scoutston with Schiz and his minder aka Mrs Schiz, " I know but he's nice really", get yourself to the Scouthall at 12:59 and be prepared for a very convivial afternoon, and hazy evening.

Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 2: Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs
I thought Mark Bennett looked well at home on Sunday even in the first half as did Jonny Gray, in the second half a few others joined them and had they picked their full team then we could have run them close.
I'd go for:
15. Maitland
14. Seymour
13. Bennett
12. Dunbar
11. Van Der Merwe
10. Weir
9. Niko
8. Strauss
7. Fusaro
6. Harley
5. Kellock
4. Swinson
3. Welsh
2. MacArthur
1. Grant
16. YanuYanutawa
17. Hall
18. Low
19. Swinson
20. Holmes
21. Cusiter
22. Jackson
23. Lamont

Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 2: Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs
Numbers, I think you have to start with Ruaridh. He is really on song at the moment and I can not think of any credible reason for dropping him.
I think the first half V Cardiff flattered the Chiefs somewhat. The Blues defense seemed to be based on not contesting the breakdown thereby keeping numbers spread across the field. This would eventually lead to the Chiefs kicking for territory which could be run back by Cuthbert and 1/2p. The Chiefs sussed this out quickly and used quick ball to attack close in and made hay until half-time when the Blues regrouped with plan B.
Glasgow will be better organised and will attack from the off.44-33 to us.

No I meant Gray starting but made a mistake when I was deciding between Swinson and Kellock and ended up putting both.
I also went for Weir because I don't think Jackson is good enough, Weir, in my opinion, is the better player and needs game time to recover from his injury.

Jackson was pretty damn good v Toulon despite the comments of the moronic commentary team on Sky 2. Let him kick as well he got 4/4 yesterday.

Re: HC, Pool 2, Round 2: Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs
We are missing Cusack badly. I think we have a number of very good props, but not convinced (Cusack aside) that we are quite up to mark against the best scrummaging teams. i.e. we either do very well against average scrummaging teams but as soon as we are up against a top scrummaging team weaknesses show.
Same applies for me with Grant - looks good against most but struggles against the best. If he manages to get in a good initial position after the hit then he does tend to make progress against his opposite number, but depends on the back 5 behind. With Swinson and Kellock as the locks and Strauss at 6 to stablise I wonder whether the opportunity to get into the right position first up is increased. As you say GC Grant looked ok against Castro, but as soon as the power came on from the rest of the pack we struggled.
Gray has looked great so far but wonder whether we need that scrummaging balance for the first 50 against the big teams - Holmes on the open side too for me.

TJ, regrettably you'll also be forced to endure my company!jimbopip wrote:Schiz, bi-focals letting me down again. Possibly Barry at 23?
TJ, if you haven't been to Scoutston with Schiz and his minder aka Mrs Schiz, " I know but he's nice really", get yourself to the Scouthall at 12:59 and be prepared for a very convivial afternoon, and hazy evening.

Numbahs, that's plenty of your blasphemy, don't let fES hear you for goodness sake - these lads have to play another 4,832,971 games before they can be considered professionals123456789 wrote:I thought Mark Bennett looked well at home on Sunday even in the first half as did Jonny Gray, in the second half a few others joined them and had they picked their full team then we could have run them close.

13. Bennett
12. Dunbar
11. Van Der Merwe
10. Weir
9. Niko
8. Strauss
7. Fusaro

1. Grant
16. YanuYanutawa

20. Holmes

GC, agreed - I felt that Glasgow's scrum problems were mainly from Angela against that monster he was opposite, the one that looked like BA Baraccus (sp?) but made of granite and bigger and scarier. Grant seemed to deal with Castro fine on the other sideGeorge Carlin wrote:Not sure I understand that. I'm sorely tempted to eschew the burger van and grace the Scout Hut at 13:02 just to witness a crazy guy chasing two parents around, shouting, "ah come on, it's just a bit o' fun!! People normally love my elephant impersonation!"

Yes, Angela got a bit of a manshaming from Emmanuel Felsina, who was in a lot of the 'team of the round' selections. An enormous man and proof again that there's nobody like Cusack. If he's not right in the new year, then Nathan Bomrys needs to sell a kidney to get someone like Owen Franks, Daniel Kotze or Frik Kirsten over here.

Only some standing places behind the sticks are left for this game. All seats have gone.
Am rather hacked off that it won't be live on telly, apparently...

Yes Jimbo dude. ASBO, IanB and TJ (if he can give his mum and dad the slip !) will be partying hard and getting well wicked with the NS Massif. You, my man, are a finely honed athlete who cannot be tempted by alcoholic narcotics, sins of the flesh and of course exciting, live sporting occasions in the leafy WE of Glasgow.

Yeah on Saturday we have a Vets game away to Upminster. They play every week, are effectively a club within a club- refuse to play for their fists or seconds, and most of our lads are looking on it as a jolly boys' outing with a bit of a run around in the middle of the day.
I'm definitely on the wrong side of the looking glass. Like Chunk at a Mr Universe contest.

One or two always slip thru the net, Jen - the try-fest between Embra vs Racing a year or so back was another that wasn't televised (although an unofficial version appeared on youtube eventually)Jenifer McLadyboy wrote:Not on the Red button? I thought pretty much every game was shown in the HC?
