Also interesting that most people are picking Novak to displace Nadal, probably has a lot to do with Novak's current 20 plus match streak and two recent victories over Nadal, but also if Nadal does manage to repeat his YE #1 it will be the first time in his career. My only hope is that if he fails to repeat that it is not because of injury.

^ Federer will make the WTF
It's interesting how everyone expects Murray to return as strong as before after back surgery. Hopefully it's gone well but there has been a lot of secrecy about it. I heard the operation took a few hours but there is as far as I know no news about what he had done. Even Neil Harman doesn't know but he still is confident of Murrays strong return. I'm trying to think of a player who has been able to recover completely after surgery.

Re: Predictions for 2014 top 5 and slam winners
In relation to Murray, I think there is confidence due to the fact it is surely not a risk he would have taken if it wasn't low risk. He had managed the back issues well enough to pick up a slam two months before the op.
Obviously there is risk with any surgery but it feels like this was a managed and calculated decision rather than being a last option as has so often been thr case with other players.

Re: Predictions for 2014 top 5 and slam winners
He said on the Jonathan Ross show that he had some bone shaved off to relieve a pressure point in his back. And you're right, it's not a small op by the sounds of it and there is no certainty that he will come back at the same level. I guess people have gone with the assumption that if it had a chance of damaging his mobility then he wouldn't have done it.hawkeye wrote:^ Federer will make the WTF

1) Murray has a cocky assured way of talking about the future, quite openly. I don't think he'd be doing this if it wasn't a complete success, i.e. he's not prone to spin
2) If it's bone shaving then it's likely that it was something not needed, i.e. it was getting in the way. This surely this gives a better long term prognosis than say a disc issue
3) He reocoverd well in 2007 after a similar spell out with his wrist

Re: Predictions for 2014 top 5 and slam winners
Are we confident that Murray & Nadal will get to the QF of all four slams in 2014? In 2013 Nadal was absent for AO, got beat in the first round at Wimbledon (clearly a problem with mobility) but won FO & the USO (that has to be one of the strangest collections of results).
In 2013 Murray won Wimbledon, was absent for the FO, got to the final of AO and got beat in the QF of the USO (a very poor defence of his title). He has just had a back operation and it is not certain that he will be fit enough to play AO2014.
Uncertainty always surrounds Nadal because he seems to know only one way to play - more or less full on until he "destroys / damages" his body - followed by time out and recovery. While getting beaten by Djokovic in the WTF it seemed that he might have over stretched something towards the end.
Djokovic had the more consistent season (winner AO, semi-final against Nadal at FO, Final at Wim, Final at USO).
For me 2014 will be interesting just to see how well Nadal and Murray do (& whether or not they make it to the start of each slam).
For me there are lots of unknowns - the only thing certain is that Djokovic will be highly competive throughout the season. Personally I think he is likely to make a stronger challenge in 2014 in what has been overall quite a disappointing 2013 season. I think he has said as much in his interviews saying he plans to make a more focussed attack on the slams for next season.

Re: Predictions for 2014 top 5 and slam winners
The surgery is called a discectomy and it's actually very minor in the world of back problems.. I've had 3 for different herniated discs.. Its not actually shaving the bone - they remove a small bone then shave the disc down so it no longer puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. 93% success rate thought I was one of the unlucky 7% and have sciatic problems still...Danny_1982 wrote:He said on the Jonathan Ross show that he had some bone shaved off to relieve a pressure point in his back. but it terms of the procedure being "no small op and there is no certainty that will come back to same level"- it really is a minor operation-- I'm actually surprised if it really is a discectomy which is what he described on the Ross show that his recovery was so long.. There are NFL running backs who have come back after 6 weeks from the same surgery and take the brutal pounding they take.
Mabye Murray had complications like me and loss of some nerve ability.

That is what I like Silver, put up or shut up as the saying goes, you would have made a great no-limit poker player, throw the chips in the middle and let your opponents do the sweating. But there can only be one Nostrafreakingdamus.

In fairness, I thought it was a good decision to be very cautiuous, like Rafa is, rather than rushing back like Nalbandian

Re: Predictions for 2014 top 5 and slam winners
Looking at the top eight rather than just the top five - Fed should make it. If he could finish in the top eight in a comparatively poor year he should do it in a better year.
Other top eight considerations to be borne in mind is that Rafa and Murray should both be around for more of the year in 2014 than they were in 1013, so have more chance of denying others (Stan, Berd, Gasquet) of the big points they got at some tourneys in 2013.

Rankings:
1. Djokovic
2. Nadal
3. Murray
4. Del Potro
5. Ferrer
Slams:
I actually think Djokovic has an excellent change of winning Roland Garros - he gave Nadal a run for his money last time - just lost his mind at end of the match. Aus Open, got to go with Djokovic again - he does appear to be at a different level on Rebound Ace. Wimbledon - I think Murray will win - its not Djoko's best surface and Nadal has had those strange early losses their recently. US Open - I'll go for Del Potro - surely he's got to win another slam with his game at some stage. I think Federer will make a slam final, and that will be his last hurrah...
Aus Open: Djokovic beats Nadal
French Open: Djokovic beats Nadal
Wimbledon: Murray beats Federer (or Tomic, seriously - he does well at Wimbledon)
US Open: Del Potro defeats Djokovic

Before anyone predicts 2014, drag out the 2013 predictions from a year ago. See how prescient you all were (if anyone actually was), rather than predict how prescient you all hope to be

How do you mean? That was all done right after 2013 season ended:antonico wrote:Before anyone predicts 2014, drag out the 2013 predictions from a year ago. See how prescient you all were (if anyone actually was), rather than predict how prescient you all hope to be

Why now again? Surely now is the time to predict 2014 - in fact maybe even a little bit too late for that too?

I thought I would bump this up. Halfway through the season.
It seems 2 of you saw Wawrinka making inroads into the rankings and Slams
Also it seems Del Potro has buggered up everyone's predictions.

Seems like nobody got the slam winners right.

Yup, 100% went out of the window almost immediately.
To be fair, I'm sure I'll be horribly wrong from here on! ALPanorak may not be, though

I figured Stan would be able to carry over his good form and consistency from the back of last season, though I am still majorly surprised he made the leap to (deserved) Gran Slam winner!
Even without defending all his Wimbledon points, I reckon there's still a strong chance Murray will climb back into the Top 3/4 come the end of the season especially since he played averagely in a couple of the Autumn US tournies before missing the whole Asian and Indoor swing last year. It's a real pity Delpo's wrist injury flared up again otherwise I could have still had a chance with a 100% top 5 prediction ! (Naturally it is also a great shame for him personally & the Tour as a whole too).

Bump for Wimbledon! Although it would seem that not a single person called this one correctly
Novak moves into the #1 position...

Quite sad to see how much del Potty featured in everyone's predictions. Wonder if he's ever going to have a good run of non-injury form. Do hope so.
