Top 10 Greatest Shocks In History.
I'm going to be writing an article about the greatest shocks in boxing and want some input from our posters, many of whom are more knowledgeable than me.
Who do guys think have scored the greatest shocks in history? Why do you believe this?
Any opinions will be put in the article as well

Does Calzaghe-Lacy count?
Also Frazier beating Ali - or was that considered quite even?

Re: Top 10 Greatest Shocks In History.
Toney beating Nunn was going at 20-1 in Vegas. One of those ones which, looking back, doesn't particularly strike you as a huge upset, but factoring in where each man was at in their respective careers you can see why it shook up boxing so much.
A lot of big ones already mentioned, but in terms of fighters with very, very average records just getting it right on the night for one time and one time only, there is another one including Nunn - when he dumped his WBA Super-Middleweight belt to Steve Little. In his whole career, I believe Little only beat about eight or nine fighters with winning records and he'd been outclassed several times before facing Nunn whenever he'd stepped up a level (Terry Norris, Mark Breland, John David Jackson etc). Little in turn lost the belt to Frankie Liles in his first defence, and never won another fight of any consequence again, disappearing in to obscurity.
Also, Wilfredo Gomez losing his WBA Super-Featherweight belt to Alfredo Layne in 1986 must be up there. Layne had a 13-5 record coming in to the fight, with most of those wins coming against men with losing records, and lost all but one of his subsequent fights afterwards - but on the night he was too much for the great Gomez, who was stopped in nine rounds. Not sure what the odds were, but you've got one of the best fighters of his era being usurped by a man who hadn't even qualified for journeyman status beforehand.
Going back a bit further, Willie Pastrano winning the Light-Heavyweight title from Harold Johnson. In the years after Archie Moore's retirement, Johnson was now finally getting the plaudits he deserved and was even being mentioned as a possible opponent for Liston in a Heavyweight title fight (Liston was ringside watching the action unfold against Pastrano). Pastrano was seen as a wasted talent (as his trainer Angelo Dundee said, "he always preferred a pretty girl to a session in the gym"), and had only managed to win one in three meetings against Wayne Thornton before challenging Johnson. But on the night he took a disputed points verdict to lift the title (very good fight, too).
Good luck trying to narrow it down to ten!

You're wrong about Gomez vs Layne... Chris...........KO magazine picked Layne to win because Gomez was showing signs of being washed up.........
6-5 with the bookmakers........Gomez.......It was pickem.

Really? Didn't know that. Can't believe anyone could pick Layne to win! Gomez was definitely deteriorating to some extent, given the gift he got against Lockridge, but still, he wasn't fighting another champion, or a ranked contender. Layne was a no-mark. You learn something new every day, I guess!

Gomez was finished during/after Rocky.......A fight he got battered in and got a stinking verdict...He spent time in hospital after that fight........Ko scored it 145-139 or something.......KO's Worse decision of the year.....
Layne was a big 130 pounder though ordinary.........
No real shock that one..........They commented at the time that Layne was the only 130 pounder Gomez could beat in the top 10 and they didn't pick him to win that one..
Excellent choices the others though Mate........

Re: Top 10 Greatest Shocks In History.
I am gonna sling one out there: Ricky Hatton vs Kostya Tszyu. For all his unbeaten record, Ricky had been defending the WBU title a lot before meeting Tszyu and it was a big step up in class.
Whilst many expected him to do well, not too many were thinking "Ricky will set a pace that Kostya can't cope with & he'll retire on his stool". It was an unexpected result for me, anyway...

Hopkins beating Trinidad was a big one. him beating pavlik was to some people, although I don't know why.
eubank beating benn was a big domestic shock at the time. people seem to forget benn was massive favourite going into that one
