First topic message reminder :
Well, nothing on here much for discussion so thought this could begin.
At the moment Westisbest is probably pulling his hair out, whilst Wigan are marching on towards there second FA Cup in a row.

Re: The FA Cup
Sounded like a nasty injury in the Blackburn game that the emergency services didn't rush to get to, hope the conditions haven't had to much to do with the injury.
Always good to see City getting beat, you'd expect them to score eventually though.

Those Watford defenders are in for a tough last 30 minutes or so. To say the least.

There must have been some furrowed brows at Eastlands this afternoon. I suppose we can say now that a City comeback was inevitable, but the Watford fans had real hope. For a while..... just for a while.....

double break fracture in the leg wasn't it? Horrendous injury for Everton, just when he was emerging for the club. Be out the WC for Costa Rica too. Hope he has successful surgery & comes back ASAP.

Re: The FA Cup
Another good win for Everton, professional like always. But with Baines injured and now Oviedo (bad injury) they are struggling for a left back. Problem is, not many clubs have fantastic full backs so it will be interesting to see their current transfer activity this week coming and their game on Tuesday as to who they play. But still, they'll end up winning.

Re: The FA Cup
ITV reported tonight that Oviedo has broken his fib and tib. He'll be away from the game for a verrrrrrrry long time with that, methinks, but I will play at spokesman for the site and say that we would all wish him well for a full recovery, no matter how long it takes.
An interesting day's cup football with no serious shocks, although Kidderminster came close to benefitting from a Sunderland team that looked tired from Wednesday night's exertions. Southend didn't exactly get the rub of the green and only the width of a crossbar came between them and a much closer contest with Hull City.
The balls come out of the velvet bag tomorrow. I must confess to having a soft spot for Charlton Athletic and I hope they get a kindly draw.

FreekShow wrote:Lion, do you still hold the FA Cup in high regard?
I do indeed, sir.
The FA Cup is a magnificent tournament which, even with the movements of the times, comes as close as any contest does to the proper meaning of the word "sport".
It allows the common workaday man to rub shoulders with the elite of the game and compete with them on, nominally at least, equal terms. It gives every dog his day.
It allows the fans of those clubs the chance to say "I was there", because people will flock to cup ties, not because they truly believe their team of bank clerks and plasterers really can beat a team of Premiership superstars, but because there is a chance. Just a chance. That's all. And if it the miracle happens, they want to be able to say "I was there".
The FA Cup is a dream factory and that is its major appeal. Even when minnows get to the final there is no guarantee of success.... Millwall didn't beat Man Utd..... Pompey didn't beat Chelsea.... Southampton didn't beat Arsenal.
But on the other hand, Sunderland did beat Leeds. Wigan did beat Manchester City. And that's what keeps the fans coming back, time and again... that hope that they might be there when the result-against-the-odds happens.
Some call it "The romance of the cup". They may have a point. It's the romance that keeps us coming back in optimism, when the bitter disappointment of previous experience reminds us of the hard headed reality of footballing life.
There have been no major shocks this weekend, but you never know...... perhaps in the fifth round. Or maybe the Sixth. Hey..... a minnow may just make it to the semi final... or the final.
Then again, they probably won't. But as long as the FA Cup exists, so will the dream. Call me a romantic old fool if you wish, but the dream is what I love about it.

Re: The FA Cup
I've felt for a good few years now that the cup has lost some prestige, so to speak.
Wigan beating City in the final should be paralleled with Wimbledon beating the mighty 'Pool in 88. But it's not.
I still hear the older generation talking about Sunderland in 73.
Sutton beating Coventry was a big deal yet a non league team in Luton beating Norwich a couple of years ago is not.
It's quite sad really. But does anybody care?

Re: The FA Cup
The FA Cup will always hold magic for as long as I can see Mickey Thomas scoring THAT free kick against Arsenal, and of course hear Paul Merson moan about it.
I didn't think Luton where in the conference when they beat Norwich Freek.

Re: The FA Cup
If I'm honest, this is probably the most boring FA Cup in the last 5 years at least. I know there has only really been 2 rounds that we've all focused on as much but there hasn't really been any shocks yet. Watford, almost, Kidderminster, almost but they didn't. Were there any shocks in the last round? Man United v Swansea - but United have been poor at home this season. There wasn't really. Maybe 1 that I've missed. But as the rounds go on, less shocks happen. I can see this FA Cup being boring this year.

Some twonk on Sportsday last night mentioned almost immediately that Costa Rica were in England's group at the WC when talking about Oviedo's injury.
I never saw the incident though. Was it a bad challenge or just really unlucky?

Oviedo won the ball in a tackle as the player was about to kick it and he's ended up kicking the back of Oviedos leg, nothing nasty about it.

The guy who got sent off deserves a smack and I hope Clough gives him one. No need to be getting sent off for a petulant kick off the ball, should know better especially when you're the captain.
