Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
And we hit mighty 1000!
Burleigh is a good signing, especially a on a two year deal. Heathcote and Bezzy are only on 1 year deals... so this time next year we could be looking for more fly halves again! Hope not!
Glasgow's Ashe looks to have impressed a view faces, I hope to see more of him at Scotstoun.

Gregor Townsend just tweeted "@GlasgowWarriors I heard #thepen has been busy?"
Hopefully this means some more announcements tomorrow.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
Does Glasgow need any new signing? Hooker is maybe a bit bare, so too SH,FH, but really is anyone needed?
I can only imagine it might be a target, probably SQ, signing in readiness for RWC.
John Hardie? Robbie Robinson?

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
Well I've just had a wee tweet from Matt Scott....!
Was discussing how him and Burleigh would make a good centre combo, and I tweeted saying only if Matt is at 12.
He then tweeted me asking what's wrong with him playing 13!
I said nothing, just thought he was better suited to 12!
But awkward....

That's funny! I hope he realises that you were complimenting him. He's a great 12 and a good 13, plus we need him at 12 for Scotland.

I never get any tweets from Glasgow players. It's either....
(a) they know I don't have a Twitter account
or
(b) they're all too busy playing for Scotland.

Actually that last comment would have been funnier if it had been any MFL other than Matt Scott (12) who tweeted you as apart from the Messiah, GC's Uncle Dougie and a couple of lads in the Ayr under 10's he is undoubtedly the best 12 in Scotland at the moment.

Glasgow have signed James Downey from Munster on a 2 year deal. Good solid Pro 12 player. Center Its not an area of weakness in our squad, but we could do with some help at IC as most our guys are more 13 than 12s.
Also important to get an experienced back in who should be available during the International windows.

I suppose it looks like Dinbar and Bennett will feature more frequently for Scotland, Horne too, so you're maybe a bit thin then.
Could we be seeing more Horne at 10 and Dunbar/Bennett 13?

Yeah, I can see Horne playing a lot more at 10 this year.

Good signing but maybe a little strange to give him a 2 year deal given he's 33. Might have been the only way to get him.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
This is a good signing. He has heaps of experience and whilst not being the most expansive of players, he'll come in really handy during the wet winter (and summer) months when you have to keep it tight and just get across the advantage line.
He's played in loads of big club games, so I think he'll bring something extra to the training ground as well.
I've done something I'll probably regret this morning and renewed my season ticket. Now to tell a very pregnant Mrs Fes......

Good signing, very underrated player imo and i will never get why he didn't feature more with Ireland..
That said i thought Glasgow were well covered at centre with the likes of Lamont and DTH able to switch there too.

Burleigh came on with 12 minutes to go as the Highlanders beat the chiefs - anyone watch the game?

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
Better start a new banter thread - well done everyone on being the funniest and most verbose crowd on these boards. Been off for a while with work, but generally:
Burleigh - am actually pleased with this - he sounds very solid and dependable and must have hit minimum quality thresholds to be in the core Highlanders and Chiefs squads. According to my people in NZ, he is a go-to guy on the bench for the Highlanders and is basically one of the first (if not the first) subs used if a backline player needs replaced.
Downey - very pleased indeed with this - with Ascarate and McGuigan going, we needed quality cover like this. Now Glasgow has Scotland's first choice 13 (Dunbar), 2nd choice 12 (Horne), 2nd choice 13 (Bennett) and someone who would have played for Ireland a hell of a lot more if D'Arcy/BOD wasn't such a well established combo.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
Watching Horne at 12 on this Scotland tour I do wonder that we are short at 12. I know he is on his way back from injury but he has just not looked convincing. He is a ball player, but is not the 12 to take the ball up to test the opposition defence. He tried that against the Argies and got killed, it could be very bad if he tries this against SA. There is no doubt as well, that at times last year we tried to play far to much ball, both games against Cardiff in particular. The tight European games are rarely going to be won by sides playing fancy rugby, all the good European teams soften you up first by playing hard and direct, then may cut loss later on.
Russell is now going to play 10, Dunbar and Bennett both can play 12, but both are better at 13 it would seem. Sean Lamont needs to be kept well away from that position as well. I think Toonie has identified a weakness in the squad and has filled it with a good solid pro with bags of top flight experience. A good signing I would say.
