Rio de Janiero - 2014 Fifa World Cup Thread
First topic message reminder :
This **should** be the main article for the Fifa World Cup 2014 competition that happens in 10 days time. Lets try and keep the debate simple yet reasonable about all of the build-up, the stadiums, the countries, the players, the qualifying, the winners and most importantly, the "bought" 2022 World Cup.
Enjoy! (And... lets try and make this World Cup as good as possible considering all of the poor build-up, tragic deaths and he outrageous violence that has been happening over recent months)

About time Xavi was dropped, been average for last two years. Expecting a tight game tonight, Spain to just nick it, 2-1

Chile to park the bus. A draw would give them a good chance to progress.

A shame the flow of the game was spoiled by the worst refereeing performance of the tournament, but oh well.
Well done both sides, particularly Australia.
not sure it was quite as bad as the first brazil game or the first mexico game

Again, following on my point about tournament experience yesterday, you can see that it played a key factor in this game. They were unfortunate Australia but if they had a slightly better quality team, they would have won that game.

You know, Chile can win this. They are not a bad side. Spain will be hurting but Chile can certainly cause an upset here.

I don't think that Chile will defend to be honest. Spain will be desperate and may be open for counter attacks so should be a very good game.

Chile know that two draws and they're through, so they'll soak up the pressure and try to hurt Spain on the counterattack.
1-1 draw, or Chile to pinch it.

If Chile can't get up for this match then they've no right to be in the competition. A chance to knock out the defending Champions and make a name for themselves? They should be champing at the bit. Spain will be nervy for the opening half hour, warm into the game and then half time will see one of them make the necessary adjustment to win. Close game either way*

Chile's approach is score more than they concede so I cant see them taking a defensive approach to be honest.

Yes Chile! Quick counterattack, and superb composure after an Alonso error.

Exactly what I said, Chile will not defend. Spain are in real trouble here.

. They did defend 99% of the time. Specially the first 15 minutes. Good opportunistic goal though.

Huh? Chile have been far more attacking than Spain this match. Spain have passed it around with a few inroads but Chile have been very attacking and direct when they have the ball.

Yeah a bit too direct maybe as they usually lose posession after 2 passes!

I think that the Chile have been good value 'whocares' (great name by way ) certainly putting Spain under pressure. Now that they have gone a goal up, I expect Spain to have more possession and be more attacking and really open for counterattacks.

Maybe that thrashing from Holland has destroyed the Spanish sprit.

What a bum casillas is.
Quite frankly he has ruined 2 games that would have been interesting to see Spain chasing.

It's so easy to defend against though; absolutely everything comes through the middle for Spain..if you can soak it up and pick the ball off on the edge of your own box then you can easily counter them.
Re: Rio de Janiero - 2014 Fifa World Cup Thread
So Spain have done what France did in 2002, and are forty-five minutes away from elimination.
Chile's high-pressing game has been audacious, but ultimately successful. Yes, Spain have looked dangerous for moments on the final third, but it's not enough to hold out against a rampant Chile team. Xabi Alonso has had a shocker.
Nearly there, Chile!

Don't know.
He nearly lost Madrid la decima, huge alarm bells should have been ringing.
Alonso and silva have been very poor.

Diego Costa for £32 million isn't looking to hot either...Chelsea could be looking at the 3 most expensive striker flops in history in Shevchenko, Torres and now Costa.
He lacks pace and mobility which for me are essential in the premiership.

Re: Rio de Janiero - 2014 Fifa World Cup Thread
Chile have been good; I didn't and haven't dismissed them being dark horses after the Australia game and this is exactly why. They really do seem to turn up against the big teams and have that counter attacking style which is now the new chosen way of playing, replacing the tika tak...
2010 showed that times were changing tactically...2012 & 2013 showed it on the club stage and 2014 has confirmed it.
